About CUBO CUBO is the association for commercial and campus services professionals in higher and further education. With a mission to promote and deliver excellent student and campus experiences we: n connect members and supports their learning through events, training, research and best practice; n enable members to use their skills and business acumen to deliver services and income that enhance universities; n work with organisations that share our ethos of using commercial activity to provide excellent, value for money services that support wider university missions; n advocate for high quality and innovative campus life activity. Over 750 commercial and campus services directors, their teams and colleagues make up the CUBO community. Their responsibility extends across accommodation and residence life, catering and hospitality, conferencing and summer business, as well as retail, sport, nurseries, security, print and design, arts venues, soft FM, hard FM, timetabling, digital services and even the whole estate. CUBO’s members are generally represented by the most senior member of staff responsible for the strategic development and management of a university’s commercial activities and campus services. CUBO also administers the UUK Code of Accommodation Practice – protecting students’ rights to a safe, good quality place to live at 146 higher education establishments. Through the Covid-19 pandemic, CUBO has contributed to government consultations on student accommodation and quarantine arrangements, while providing members with essential networking and updates, both digitally and virtually. “ Everyone in commercial services will find something valuable to take “ away from the event. Chair’s Welcome On behalf of the CUBO Board, a warm welcome to Summer Conference 2021 to our members, partners and guests. Words can fail when thinking about this year, but for me (and I suspect many of you) it’s been challenging, exhilarating, depressing, engaging, exciting and tiring – sometimes all at the same time! I hope this CUBO conference can be a haven and respite in the year, and that we can all take some time out to reflect, learn lessons, understand how to address the future and be stimulated to be the best leaders that we can be. The programme has been carefully developed to reflect the wide portfolio of commercial and campus services that CUBO members lead and manage. Whether you can make the whole conference, or can only drop into to specific sessions, everyone in commercial services will find something valuable to take away from the event. The Team Ticket has opened up the conference, so it’s great to provide this opportunity to more staff then ever from across the sector. It’s important to thank to both members and partners, who support us throughout the year and have contributed to making every CUBO Conference and event such a great experience. A particular thanks however to Phil Scott as Chair of the Conference Committee and Jan Capper and the team for organising CUBO Summer 2021. I am sad that we cannot meet in person again this year, but one of the positives from the pandemic has been the flexibility and imagination shown in the sector: from almost nothing, we have learnt how to create engaging and informative virtual meetings and conferences, and the zero carbon meeting is here to stay. However, I don’t believe that this can replace all the networking opportunities provided by a real world conference, so I’ll see you next year in person! With best wishes Jo Hardman, CUBO Chair and Director of Commercial Services, Lancaster University 5 @cubo_comms #cubosummerconf2021
