Conference 2021

On behalf of Gidget Foundation Australia, we are delighted to announce our inaugural
Perinatal Mental Health Conference 2021 which will be held in Sydney on Sunday 24th and
     Monday 25th October 2021.

We are thrilled to be joined by an amazing array of inspirational presenters and leaders in
the perinatal field, who have come from all over Australia. They will be sharing the latest
approaches, clinical interventions, and research into this area we are all so passionate about.
It will also provide space and time to reflect on your practice as a therapist. It is an event not to
     be missed.

The theme of the Conference is Towards Healing: Insights into the Complexities of Perinatal
Mental Health. Gidget Foundation Australia recognises the value of professional development
both in our Clinicians and the wider perinatal community. You will have the opportunity
to listen to ground-breaking new research as well as enhancing your skills in infant mental
health, fatherhood, complementary medicines, couples work, grief and loss, as well as cultural
     awareness.

It is also an opportunity for you to meet the team and develop connections with Gidget
Foundation Australia Clinicians, staff, the Board and Committee. This two-day event will
provide all our Clinicians time out to recharge, learn some new ideas and be inspired!

Following is an outline of the Conference program, as well as profiles of our speakers. We look
forward to having you all at this face-to-face event. How wonderful it will be to all be together!

     DEBORAH de WILDE OAM

hospitals across Sydney. Whilst working as a midwife her contact with families
at times of crisis led her to undertake a degree in social work. After a period
as a member of the Counselling Section at the Institute of Forensic Medicine,
Deb returned to the obstetric setting.

Deb has cared for families experiencing perinatal loss for forty years. She
was an early exponent of documenting the lives of these babies through
photography and the provision of other mementos and pioneered the
approach where parents are offered the opportunity to see, hold and spend
time with their stillborn or dying baby. The approach has become standard
practice throughout Australia, though early on it was controversial and at
times met with resistance by hospital staff.

Deb de Wilde, Peter Barr, and Julie Dunsmore established SANDS NSW in 1983. Deb, Peter and Julie’s
early work with families was documented in Martin Langdon Down’s award winning documentary film,
‘Some Babies Die.’ Deb and Peter co-authored the booklet Stillbirth and Newborn Death: Death and life
     are the same mysteries.

With her colleague Belinda Power, Deb facilitates a monthly support group for bereaved parents as well
as a dedicated antenatal support group for parents in a pregnancy that follows the death of a baby.

     ELLY TAYLOR
Elly Taylor is an internationally recognised perinatal relationship specialist,
award winning author and founder of Becoming Us. Elly began studying the
transition into parenthood from a relationship perspective when she noticed
both the intricacies of the couple relationship and the similarities in client’s
stories during this time. Based on this intimate knowledge and emerging
research, Elly created Becoming Us, a relationship-developmental framework
for pregnancy and early parenthood which supports the mental, emotional
and relationship wellbeing of the whole family.

Elly’s passion is educating perinatal professionals about the power and
potential of using a “whole family approach”. She has presented Becoming
Us at national and international conferences, been a research project advisor
for Monash University, The Australian Catholic University, Newcastle University and Columbia University
