GLOBAL WARMING Market • A recent report by a reputed journal claimed that insurance agencies paid out a record $135 billion because of disasters like hurricanes, floods and wildfires and total losses amounted to $330 billion. It is a well-known fact that global warming caused mainly by the emission of greenhouse gases has led to a drastic increase in these type of natural calamities. • There has been an increase in the development and population of areas that are prone to severe weather. • In the year 2015, there was a huge conference on global warming and climate change conducted by the United Nations (United Nations Climate Change Conference) in France. Representatives from 196 countries attended the conference. The conference was budgeted to cost $ 186.87 million at the time. The French government said that 20% of the cost was borne by French firms such as Air France, Renault-Nissan and BNP Paribas. This clearly indicates that many private companies are very interested in reducing their carbon emissions and therefore are willing to spend huge amounts of money on research and global conferences. • At the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 22) in Marrakesh, the leaders and heads of many developed countries laid out a plan for providing at least $100 billion a year for developing countries to support climate change. • Siemens, a global energy giant, says it can make a profit by reducing its carbon emissions. The company plans to spend nearly $110 million lower the company’s emissions. It is believed that the investments would eventually payoff through savings of between $20 million to $30 million annually. • Dell has invested in using information technology like big data analytics to reduce energy consumption in its facilities. • US businesses that commit to cutting carbon emissions by 3 percent annually through 2020 would reap as much as $190 billion from reduced energy bills, increased productivity and innovation and the tapping of new clean energy sources such as solar energy. • Many corporations have realized the importance of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases by the end of this decade. Failing to do so will make it much harder to meet carbon reduction goals over the long term. It will also increase the risk of business disruptions caused by extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and severe storms. • Calculations show that from 1993 to 2014, the total U.S expenditures on climate change amounted to more than $166 billion. • The net value of the global climate change industry is estimated to be about $1.5 trillion. http://globalwarming.alliedacademies.com/
An Intro to PARIS Paris is the capital and most populous city in France, with an area of 105 square kilometres (41 square miles) and a population of 2,206,488. Since the 17th century, Paris has been one of Europe’s major centres of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts. In 2013-14, the Paris Region had the third-highest GDP in the world and the largest regional GDP in the EU. The city is a major rail, highway, and air-transport hub served by two international airports: Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly. Opened in 1900, the city’s subway system, the Paris Métro, serves 5.23 million passengers daily, and is the second busiest metro system in Europe after Moscow Metro. Paris’s Gare du Nord is one of the ten busiest railway stations in the world, with 262 million passengers in 2015. Paris is especially known for its museums and architectural landmarks: The Louvre was the most visited art museum in the world in 2016, with 7.4 million visitors. The Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie are noted for their collections of French Impressionist art, and the Pompidou Centre Musée National d’Art Moderne has the largest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe. The historical district along the Seine in the city centre is classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site. Popular landmarks in the centre of the city include the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris and The Gothic royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle, both on the Île de la Cité; the Eiffel Tower, constructed for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889; the Grand Palais and Petit Palais, built for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1900; the Arc de Triomphe on the Champs-Élysées, and the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur on the hill of Montmartre. Paris received 23 million visitors in 2017, making it the world’s top tourist destination. http://globalwarming.alliedacademies.com/
Guide for International Delegates Paris Climate: Paris lies in the midst of the Ile de France region, which has France’s lowest rainfall, however the city is known for its unexpected rain showers which can occur at any time of year. Summer temperatures are mild to warm, with occasional heat waves, while winters are very chilly with temperatures hovering around freezing point. Transport within Paris: Metro : The metro is the ideal way to get around Paris fast and easily. There are 16 lines (including 2 “bis”) traversing the city. Each line has a different color and number. So even if the abundance of lines appears overwhelming when you first look at a metro map, it quickly becomes easy when you understand how it works. At any given Metro station each Metro line will have 2 platforms, one for each direction. Each direction is marked by its terminus station, the last station on the line. Paris is a major rail, highway, and air transport hub. The Île-de-France Mobilités, formerly Syndicat des transports d’Île-de-France (STIF), and before that the Syndicat des transports parisiens (STP), oversees the transit network in the region. The syndicate coordinates public transport and contracts it out to the RATP, the SNCF and the Optile consortium of private operators managing 1,176 bus lines. A central hub of the national rail network, Paris’s six major railway stations (Gare du Nord, Gare de l’Est, Gare de Lyon, Gare d’Austerlitz, Gare Montparnasse, Gare Saint-Lazare) and a minor one (Gare de Bercy) are connected to three networks: the TGV serving four high-speed rail lines, the normal speed Corail trains, and the suburban rails (Transilien). Airways Paris is a major international air transport hub with the 5th busiest airport system in the world. The city is served by three commercial international airports: Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly and Beauvais-Tillé. Together these three airports recorded traffic of 96.5 million passengers in 2014. There is also one general aviation airport, Paris-Le Bourget, historically the oldest Parisian airport and closest to the city centre, which is now used only for private business flights and air shows. Orly Airport, located in the southern suburbs of Paris, replaced Le Bourget as the principal airport of Paris from the 1950s to the 1980s. Charles de Gaulle Airport, located on the edge of the northern suburbs of Paris, opened to commercial traffic in 1974 and became the busiest Parisian airport in 1993. Motorways The city is also the most important hub of France’s motorway network, and is surrounded by three orbital freeways: the Périphérique, which follows the approximate path of 19th- century fortifications around Paris, the A86 motorway in the inner suburbs, and finally the Francilienne motorway in the outer suburbs. Paris has an extensive road network with over 2,000 km (1,243 mi) of highways and motorways. http://globalwarming.alliedacademies.com/
