Invention Jamboree Why an Invention Jamboree? The Invention Jamboree is the natural evolution of the Great Rivers Council, Invention Scouts Program; a program dedicated to helping scouts adopt the inventing and entrepreneurial spirit. Through the program, scouts learn how to problem- solve, work in teams, and work with mentors; all under the Scouting mantra. We accomplish this by providing a hands-on program, where scouts can access learning resources, volunteers, and state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment. The motto of the Invention Jamboree is to “Become an Inventor for Life”. And today we invite all of you to become inventors for life, as we celebrate America’s inventing heritage. Inventing and innovation have long been the backbone of American growth. America would not be where it is today, without people such as Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Dr. Stephanie Kwolek, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs. Through the Invention Jamboree, Scouts and Adults will get to experience what it is like to live as an inventor. The Invention Jamboree program is structured into three components: the Invention Competition, the Invention Exhibits, and the Invention Stations. The following pages will review the program of the Jamboree. Invention Competition: Optional Scouts and adult leaders can participate in the Invention Competition. The Invention Competition is optional but encouraged. There will be two divisions: a scout division and an adult leader division. Please review pages 8 - 11 for more information on Invention Competition registration & regulations. Invention Exhibits: Throughout the day, scouts and adult leaders will have access to the Invention Exhibits. We are inviting various organizations and individuals in and out of Missouri to bring their cool inventions for viewing. The list of exhibits will be continuously updated. Invention Stations: The Invention Stations will be the bulk of the Jamboree program. Scouts will sign up for one of three “paths”, each named after a famous Missouri inventor: George Washington Carver, Edwin Hubble, & James Fergason. Each path will have 4 invention stations and its own unique invention theme: A (George Washington Carver): Shooting, Invention Lab, Blacksmith, Search & Rescue/ Geospatial Mapping B (Edwin Hubble): Climbing, Invention Lab, Welding, Robotics C (James Fergason): Drones, Invention Lab, Woodworking, Design 3
George Washington Carver Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Session 1 (8:30 am - Shooting Invention Lab Blacksmith Search & Rescue/ 10 am) Geospatial Mapping Session 2 (10:15 am Invention Lab Blacksmith Search & Rescue/ Shooting - 11:45 am) Geospatial Mapping Session 3 (2 pm - Blacksmith Search & Rescue/ Shooting Invention Lab 3:30 pm) Geospatial Mapping Session 4 (3:45 pm - Search & Rescue/ Shooting Invention Lab Blacksmith 5:15 pm) Geospatial Mapping George Washington Carver is Missouri’s most well-known inventor. Born on January 1st, 1864, in Diamond, Missouri, Carver would go on to redefine the agricultural industry. Carver is most famous for his groundbreaking research on plant biology, where he developed new uses for alternative crops. Over his lifetime, Carver would invent hundreds of products from peanuts and sweet potatoes (milk, plastic, paint, dyes, postage stamp glue, and synthetic rubber among others) derived). Carver’s emphasis on using alternative crops helped improve the lives of farmers and sharecroppers in the South. In addition to his inventing background, Carver was also a dedicated conservationist. Carver was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1990. Edwin Hubble Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Session 1 (8:30 am - Invention in Invention Lab Welding Robotics 10 am) Climbing Session 2 (10:15 am Invention Lab Welding Robotics Invention in - 11:45 am) Climbing Session 3 (2 pm - Welding Robotics Invention in Invention Lab 3:30 pm) Climbing Session 4 (3:45 pm - Robotics Invention in Invention Lab Welding 5:15 pm) Climbing The most famous space telescope in the world was named after this Missouri- born gentleman, Edwin Hubble. Born on November 20th, 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, Hubble would become one of the most important astronomers in the history of the world; walking among the ranks of Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. His most important contribution to science was his observation that “the recessional velocity of a galaxy increases with its distance from Earth”. In other words, the universe is continually expanding. This property became known as “Hubble’s Law”, and has provided the basis of which modern astronomers analyze the galaxy. 4
James Fergason Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Session 1 (8:30 am - Drones Invention Lab Woodworking Design 10 am) Session 2 (10:15 am Invention Lab Woodworking Design Drones - 11:45 am) Session 3 (2 pm - Woodworking Design Drones Invention Lab 3:30 pm) Session 4 (3:45 pm - Design Drones Invention Lab Woodworking 5:15 pm) James Fergason was born in Wakenda, Missouri in 1934. He would go on to the University of Missouri, graduating with a degree in physics in 1956. After graduating, he began to experiment and develop liquid crystals. Soon he invented the first twisted-nematic liquid crystal display, better-know as LCD. In 1968 he started his own company called ILIXCO, which manufactured LCDs. Within a few years, many electronics including digital watches, television screens, computer monitors, and calculators used LCDs. For his discovery, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1998. By the end of his career, Fergason had over 150 American patents and over 500 foreign patents. 5
