THE HISTORY OF THE KENNEDY AWARDS On Friday, August 10, 2012, NSW’s finest journalists gathered at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney to celebrate the memories and legacies of six industry legends. Les Kennedy, Cliff Neville, Sean Flannery, Paul Lockyer, Peter Ruehl and Gary Ticehurst were all masters of their craft – dedicated, passionate professionals who entertained, enlightened, and informed millions of Australians over the past five decades. The idea for the awards was hatched in a pub when Les’ close friends combined with his former editors, mates and family in February 2012. They had a plan to preserve Les Kennedy’s memory in something far more profound than the beer-soaked sentiment of bar banter. They realised that unlike the other states and territories New South Wales did not properly recognise journalists doing battle in one of the world’s most competitive news markets. The committee aimed to launch the Kennedy Awards on Friday August 10, 2012, the first anniversary of Les Kennedy’s death at the age of 53. It was a tough deadline, not just because of the logistics, sponsors and media support that needed addressing and securing. This was to be a very emotional journey. There was no looking back after the Premier agreed to present the Kennedy Award for NSW Journalist of the Year. From that point the doors flew open in a remarkably enthusiastic and passionate response from sponsors, led by NRMA Motoring and Services, our naming rights partner since 2014. On August 10, 2011, more than 250 people gathered at the Kauri Foreshore Hotel in Glebe to farewell the legend who was the inimitable, irrepressible Les Kennedy. It was to be a last goodbye to Les, but he died just eight hours earlier. It became an extraordinary celebration of a life lived large by one of the true characters in Australian journalism. At Les’ impromptu wake, chain- smoking tabloid warriors rubbed shoulders with the corduroy of broadsheet aficionados, senior cops clinked glasses with lawyers and barristers representing the underworld and many young journalists — mentored by Les – were there. Along with the amber fluid flowed myriad tributes. Les’ farewell was a truly remarkable gathering. It was the inspiration for what has become Australia’s most spirited annual celebration of quality journalism, now offering the nation’s richest media award – the $25,000 Kennedy Prize.
The Kennedy Foundation The NRMA Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism is produced by the Kennedy Foundation – a registered charity supporting news media professionals in tough times. Foundation funds are primarily raised from sponsorship of the annual NRMA Kennedy Awards for Excellence in Journalism staged in early August, around the anniversary of Les Kennedy’s death from cancer at the age of 52 in 2011. Les Kennedy (right) was a champion of shoe leather journalism, the antithesis of a newsroom-tethered phone jockey as he established an enviable network built on the kind of trust that can only be established with face-to-face contact. The Kennedy Foundation promotes strong camaraderie among news media professionals – to protect and support them in what can be a tough game. We know the intensity of competition between rival media organisations can take a heavy emotional, physical and financial toll but the foundation believes the bond formed on the road can never be broken. Since the inaugural Kennedy Awards in 2012 we have also raised funds and awareness for the Charles Perkins Trust for Students and Young People, the children’s cancer charity RedKite, the Aboriginal Medical Service, the ANZUP Below the Belt Cancer Trials and Life Education Australia. In conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney and Paradigm Resources the Kennedy Foundation has also established the Les Kennedy Scholarship for Indigenous Journalism Students. Les Kenn All applications to the Kennedy Foundation for assistance will be considered, with the utmost compassion in the strictest of confidence, for colleagues who have fallen on hard times whether through illness, injury, family grief or unemployment. The Foundation was first established from humble origins in November 2013 through the vision, drive and commitment of Les Kennedy’s close friends and colleagues, the pro bono legal services of Sydney law firm, Kennedys and the support of Racing NSW and its Chief Executive, Peter V’Landys. Led by chairman Mr Simon Dulhunty, Les’ former editor at The Sun-Herald, the foundation board includes Siobahn Fogarty, Simon Bouda, Mike Duffy, Julianne Horsman, Rebecca Richardson, Taylor Auerbach and Rocco Fazzari.
