KAVOD SENIOR LIFE Fall/Winter 2022 Growth Partnerships Gearing up for 2023 Wellness Expansion Outreach
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO This is an exciting time for many reasons. Our first in-person fundraiser after two years was held on July 14. It was good to see everyone face to face while raising significant Michael Klein, CEO funds for our residents. Enjoy the event pictures on the next page. We also brought our Kavod on the Road Conference back in June to an in-person format. I’m thrilled to see new life infused in these important events after being quieted by COVID. Our most important accomplishment has been creating Kavod’s new strategic plan. Thanks to a grant from NextFifty Initiative, we’ve been working diligently with consultants on our new objectives. Below is a high level summary that will guide us through 2023. Whether our path brings us to build, expand or extend our reach in other ways, we are moving full steam ahead. Your interest, engagement and investment will help us realize these goals. Thank you for your ongoing and continued support. SUPPORTER STORIES Director of Development Gaile Weisbly Waldinger, As you may know, Kavod Senior Life’s three buildings are supported by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds. Those funds are dedicated to providing safe and affordable housing for low-income individuals and families. I like to say that HUD is responsible for the “cake” that is our buildings. The icing – many of the programing and services – are provided by foundation grants and the generosity of donors in our community. Molly, Brian and Dale represent the thousands of individuals who are responsible for the high quality of living that is available at Kavod. We hope you are as inspired by their commitment as we are. Kavod welcomes Molly as the new board chair for 2022-2023. As a fourth generation Denver native, she has been committed to being part of the community and working to make it better for all those who live and serve here. Molly is a partner in the law firm of Miller & Steiert, P.C. She attended Colorado schools along the way—Cherry Creek High School, Colorado State University (undergraduate) and University of Denver (Juris Doctorate). She was invited to join Kavod’s Resident and Community Services committee nine years ago and continued to stay involved, helping co-chair several fundraisers and assist with other development efforts. “I have been so impressed by the organization,” Molly says. “It’s amazing what it does for the community.” She specifically notes how Kavod is one of the few nonprofits who has beneficiary representation on the board, ensuring they have a voice. As board chair, she will lead the efforts to expand Kavod’s presence across the city. “I want to establish meaningful collaborations and ensure every Jewish organization in our area knows about us,” she shares. “I will use my social maven skills!” Molly takes on her new role as Kavod launches its next strategic plan. “Our goals are extremely aspirational,” she says. “We are dreaming big. But we also have great staff and supporters who will help us get to where we want to go.”
SUPPORTER STORIES Brian Botnick Brian has been a dedicated supporter of Kavod Senior Life since 2015. He is a fourth generation partner of Botnick Realty in Ohio, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year. Contributing to the greater good was ingrained in him at an early age. Growing up in Akron, his family was very involved in the Jewish community. When he moved to Colorado in 2010, Brian started volunteering, but soon realized he could do more than “hand out sandwiches”, as he says. “I have a background in development,” Brian shares, “so I thought, how could I use my expertise to benefit the community?” He learned about Kavod at a able to get to know some of the Kavod residents as well, JEWISHcolorado event for young adults and felt his participating in a “fix it” day back in spring of 2022. “I skill set was a good match for a housing organization. really enjoyed learning more about the individuals on He joined the Kavod board shortly thereafter, and it campus, both staff and residents,” he says. was a match made in heaven. When asked his plans for the future, Brian is dedicated “Not only could I be of service, but I was able to meet to staying involved. “There’s more to life than business other business members,” he reports. Later, he was and skiing,” he smiles. Dale and her late husband, Jerry, came from multi-generational families who were committed to community service and philanthropy. “My mother modeled how to be grateful for what we had and to be generous,” she says. “It’s just what we did.” Dale and Jerry moved to Denver five years ago from Wichita, Kansas. New friends suggested they attend a Kavod on the Road event as a way to meet people their age. Dale says that they were “impressed by both the content of the programs and the people.” “Kavod has great ideas,” Dale shared. “There is something for everyone – recreational, educational and cultural.” When Jerry passed away a year ago, Kavod on the Road continued to provide Dale a connection point to friends and with enriching programming. She particularly enjoyed holiday programs and the annual conference on positive aging. She also stays very active in the greater community and personally supports a variety of non-profit organizations. This past year, she was responsible for Kavod receiving funds from a giving circle to which she contributes. In speaking with Dale, it is obvious she has no plans to slow down. She is a prime example of a dedicated community member, giving, advocating and volunteering for organizations she believes in. Kavod is very grateful for her participation and support.
