The benefits of making a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA SCAI recently received a very generous donation from a participant using this approach. It benefits everyone! If you own a Traditional IRA and you’re over age 70½, you are required to start taking distributions from the IRA each year. These required minimum distributions (or RMDs) must be taken annually even if you don’t need the funds to meet your everyday living expenses in retirement. Having to take RMDs can negatively impact your finances because the withdrawals are taxable at ordinary income tax rates. In most cases, you'll have to pay a 50% excise tax on whatever distributions you were supposed to take but didn't. However, there’s a strategy that can lessen the impact of RMDs while also allowing you to make charitable contributions in a tax-efficient way. It might seem counterintuitive that anyone would want to give their savings away but there can be tax advantages for doing so. This strategy is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). With a QCD, you can make charitable donations using money in your Traditional IRA. Since QCDs aren’t considered to be taxable income, you don’t have to pay income tax on the distributions. The funds must be transferred directly from the IRA custodian to the eligible charity—and "eligible" is an important word here. The charity must be one that is approved by the IRS (like the Senior Center). One of the biggest advantages the QCD rule provides is the ability for taxpayers to lower their adjusted gross income. This is much more valuable than taking an itemized deduction, which merely lowers taxable income. Having a lower AGI can allow the donor to stay in a lower tax bracket, reduce or eliminate the taxation of Social Security or other income. Consult with your Tax Professional on the best way for you to take advantage of this approach. An art collector was walking through the city one day. He did a double take when he noticed a mangy cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. Knowing that the saucer was extremely old and very valuable, he walked casually into the store and of- fered to buy the cat for two dollars. The store owner replied, “I'm sorry, but the cat isn't for sale.” The collector said, “Please, I need a hungry cat around the house to catch mice. I'll pay $20 for that cat.” The owner said, “Sold!” and handed over the cat. Now collector continued, “Now, I wonder if you could throw in that old saucer for the $20. The cat's used to it, and it'll save me from having to get a dish.” To which the owner said, “Sorry, buddy, but that's my lucky saucer. So far this week, I've sold 68 cats!” Answer on Page 16 A very unique Green Bay Packer Quilt is in the making! It will be one of the top silent auction Our annual Golf Outing will be held on items for the 11th Annual Golf Fundraiser. September 17th at West Bend Lakes Golf Club. This is a major fundraiser for our Center. In spite of pandemic restrictions, last year’s outing was a tremendous success, due in large part to the generosity of our participants who donated gift baskets and gift cards for our Silent Auction. We are once again seeking support for our si- lent auction. Gift cards are especially useful as even small amounts can be combined or added to items to increase the value of a gift basket. Restaurant gift cards are particularly attractive to bidders. Paula Hader, Executive Director Joan Adler, Administrative Assistant A Message from the Executive Director It’s already June! Did you know that National Daylight Appreciation Day is celebrated each year on June 21. This day recognizes summer solstice (the longest day of daylight in the northern hemisphere) and encourages people to celebrate the many benefits of the sun. It has been so great to see so many seniors returning to the Senior Center this past month. Oh, the stories people are sharing of the past year! It was so refreshing to hear that many have stayed in touch with the friends they have met through the Senior Center. Staying connected and engaged is an extremely important aspect for human beings of all ages, but it is especially important for seniors. The Senior Center continues focusing on their mission of serving seniors! Many of our previous activities have reconvened with some new ones, too! The Exerstrider Walking Poles have been a huge hit. The local ADRC State funding ena- bled us to purchase 40 pairs of the Exerstrider Walking Poles. Within a short time, all 40 pair were spoken for and each senior participant received one-on-one training instruction. Personal testimonials keep streaming in. See Page # 11 of this Newsletter for pictures. The Senior Center’s Wednesday Morning Senior Golf League is coordinated through par- ticipant, Doug Rakowski. West Bend Lakes offers a very nice discount for senior golfers. There are still openings if you are interested in joining. Thank you West Bend Lakes for your continued support despite the fire that destroyed your clubhouse in March. Weekly Woodcarving Classes and Chi Kung Classes have reconvened thanks to our par- ticipants who volunteer their time to facilitate. One-day trips are back through two travel companies who are also supporters of the Senior Center – Personalized Tours & KBC Tours. Thanks to our committed Board members and staff, the Center’s two major fundraisers are well underway – the ‘Classics for a Cause’ Car Raffle and the 11th Annual ‘Swinging for Seniors’ Golf Outing. It is our hope to reach others in a variety of ways so they feel connected in this great com- munity! If you have not yet returned, please visit the Center when you feel safe!
