Sponsor Article - 4 During the month of June, we are casting our NEST net far and wide Events - 5 to spread the word about the fun, companionship and enrichment Calendar - 10 provided by joining NEST. A membership in NEST is not only about volunteers providing neighborly support, professional service referrals, Celebrations - 11 or merchant discounts. It’s about broadening your horizons, getting to Last Chirps - 11 know your community and finding ways to share an interest or a passion. People join NEST for many reasons. They might want to: • Engage with new NE Seattle friends, such as through our walking group at Magnuson, the NEST Soup Groups, asking your neighbor to join you at Friday pickleball, or testing yourself with Trivia with Our Sponsors the Nathan Hale kids-- all perfect antidotes to loneliness, isolation or inactivity • Give back--leading programs and activities about which they are passionate and want to bring to their peers, such as our Science Club, Poetry Group, NESTcafe discussion series on hot topics and more • Provide or receive volunteer help for independent living such as driving, yardwork, dog walking, grocery shopping, etc. NEST brings unique and exciting social connections, physical activity opportunities, and intellectual and cultural engagements to our members and the broader community of older adults. As we emerge from Covid and enter into the summer season, we encourage all NEST members and volunteers to think about asking a friend or neighbor to join them to attend one of our many upcoming online public events during the Membership Drive month. You won’t want to miss any of them: • Tuesday, June 8, Northwest Elder Law Group will be presenting the basics of Estate Planning. Learn how you can secure your future and empower and protect the ones you love. • Wednesday, June 9, NEST neighbor, Board member and epidemiologist, Leslie Phillips, will give insight and answer any questions on post vaccination conundrums. • "The Third Act: Joy and Excitement in the Later Years” is our main event that will be held on Tuesday, June 15. Facilitated by Patricia Cavanaugh, psychotherapist and retirement coach, you’ll explore the psychological and emotional process of “what is the next phase” in your life as well as hear from people with experience in redefining their lives during their later years. More public and free event offerings round out the month. You’ll find more specifics and how to register for the events above on pages 5 and 6. There are always many happenings at NEST. Reach out to a friend or neighbor whose “Third Act" may just be waiting for an invitation from you to attend. Come take a step with us and help us grow and continue to build a vibrant community with strong and meaningful connections. 2
President's Corner Dear NEST Community, I am excited to “talk” with all of you today about how things are going at NEST. We recently finished our major Fundraising Drive “Into the Spring Sun”, and we raised over $22,000 with Board matching funds of $8,400. Although we fell just shy of our goal, we are continuing to receive contributions in the mail. Thank you so much to each and every one of you who contributed generously, as every dollar counts. A special thank you goes to the Board members who made calls to donors, and to staff, Chris and Laura, who actively supported the effort. We have a number of exciting events coming up, as we start to get together in person. What a challenging time this can be, as we emerge from our “Covid Cocoons” as it were. I know it sounds a bit corny, but that’s how it feels! The sun seems that much brighter (when it’s out) and seeing our families and friends after all this time is so sweet. What patience everyone has shown, along with such resilience. It’s an often-used word during this time, but it’s still the best descriptor of how all of you continue to engage in NEST activities. What have we learned from all of this? For one thing we have learned that at NEST we have many caring members who continue to take care of one another during times of isolation. This level of caring is what inspires me to continue to serve NEST. With our Membership Drive this month, our events calendar is filling up, and you will find many events in this newsletter. In the not so distant future, we will have our 10-year Anniversary Celebration in early September, with a fun day of festivities planned. Stay tuned for details! Finally, our Development Director, Laura Hitchcock, has resigned from NEST, due to the demands of her growing consulting business she shares with her husband. However, she loves NEST. She has done a wonderful job for us in Development, and she looks forward to supporting us in other ways once she leaves. Communicating w/ People Who Have Dementia This article is provided by our sponsor Shawna Brown of Sunrise Senior Living “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” – Maya Angelou Communicating with those who have dementia, whether you are a spouse, friend, or neighbor, is both rewarding and challenging. Some days are just plain hard; it seems impossible to reach your loved one, confusion ensues, and everyone ends up frustrated. Yet, there are days when clarity, compassion, and deep connection flow with ease. This is always our goal, yet ups and downs are normal depending on the day. Using principles from Naomi Feil’s Validation Method, here are simple keys to maximize communication with those who have dementia: • Center yourself: Take a deep breath, remain calm, receptive, and resourceful; • Empathy: Give undivided attention, eye contact, offer respect, patience, warm tone of voice, understanding; • Enter their reality: Rather than trying to reorient those with dementia, enter their reality instead. Vivid, emotional, long-term memories tend to stay with those who have dementia, while short-term memory fades. Go on a journey together! • Ask open-ended questions: When you are on the journey, ask questions to explore the reasoning behind the behavior. i.e. If they are demanding to see their late mom you can ask, “What do you miss most about your mom?” Ask other questions that start with who, what, when, where, and how. • Match Their Emotion: Say their emotion with the same emotion. i.e. In a sad tone say, “you seem really sad about missing your mom.” They will feel like you understand and care. • Touch: A gentle touch can offer comfort and soothe someone who is sad or anxious. However, sometimes touch may not be welcome, so it is important to read the situation. • Music: Play or sing their favorite song. This is a fantastic way to connect with a person who has dementia. Going back to Maya Angelou’s quote, no matter what role you play in the life of a person diagnosed with dementia, the most important aspect is how you make this person feel. Communication skills and techniques come in handy, but in the end, a lasting impression comes from the feeling you give the person that allows a bond of trust to develop. Safe, relaxing, and varied movement lessons stimulate the brain’s neuroplasticity to increase awareness and explore options for how we use our bodies in sitting, reaching, walking, and other activities. Movements may help improve balance, reduce pain, and decrease peripheral neuropathy. No experience needed; lessons can be done in chairs (Tuesday) or floor (Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Once a month via Zoom, Debi Quirk, RN and NEST member and volunteer will guide you through a recipe and demonstrate how to put the meal together. You may watch, or you may cook along with her, and enjoy something delicious at the end of the class. An ingredient list, recipe, nutritional facts will be sent out monthly to those who register in advance. The recipes can be adjusted for those who prefer vegetarian or vegan meals. Weather dependent In partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, we bring you Pickleball! Seattle Parks and Recreation has a mobile recreation program called Rec’N the Streets. This is an opportunity for the city to bring to you a FREE, safe, socially distanced recreation opportunity, activity and programs. Come join us for some FUN movement and enjoy the afternoon together playing fun, easy, low impact games of pickleball. Participant numbers will be limited for safety. Starting in June, Ida Culver Ravenna will host the Ladies' Lunch in-person outside in their beautiful covered garden. Lunch is limited to 10 people. Rides provided. Call NEST to register. Women’s Caregiver Support Group - Fridays from 11:00 am to noon Contact the NEST Office to get more information about attending this class via phone or computer.
