Drink up! Isn’t it nice to have the warm weather back again? Thoughts of cool breezes, a glass of lemonade come to mind. Now, with that mental image it is also important to note that there are also risks associated with summer- dehydration or the lack of sufficient fluid in the body. Water keeps the body from overheating. It is more important in warmer weather. When you move about and exercise, your muscles generate heat and your body gets rid of that heat by sweating. As sweat evaporates, it cools the tissues underneath. Sweating can reduce the body’s fluid level, which can affect bodily functions. That is why it is important to re-hydrate and drink water. One way to know if you need fluids is to check your urine. If it is dark-colored, drink more water. If it is pale, you are OK! Other signs of dehydration are: Fatigue Loss of Appetite Flushed Skin Heat Intolerance Light-headedness Dry Cough There are some beverages that are better to drink to prevent dehydration. Drinks with alcohol and caffeine are not recommended for optimal hydration as they tend to pull more fluid from the body. Stick to water or fruit-infused water. You can soak cucumbers and lemons or mint in the water and keep it in the refrigerator. Fruit juice diluted in water is also fine. Garden Tour and Tea Party with the Master Gardeners. We enjoyed our visit to the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office in Portsmouth. Thank you for having us! Friends and families of our residents: Please be aware of those around you as you leave the building. We have some residents who have Wander Guard bracelets on to protect them from leaving the building and becoming lost. Please do not allow residents to follow you out of the building if the door alarm is sounding. We appreciate your attention to this safety matter. We love our residents!
Dee Elliot, You have offered 10 years of dedication, providing our residents with meaningful and fun activities, support, and friendship. You have been a valued member of our team and we want to say thank you for all the little things you did every day that add to the high quality care for our residents! I read somewhere that retirement is when you stop living at work and begin working at living. Although you are retired, we know that we will be seeing you here regularly. I hope retirement brings you the chance to do whatever it is that you always wanted to do. Thank you for your hard work and commitment. We wish you the best!
