Donation of Laptops to Cameron House James Bui's company, Velocity, was recently absorbed by San Francisco tech giant, Salesforce, where he was asked to "dispose of" 12 laptops. Bui told us that old laptops are typically handed down to new employees after being wiped or, in this case, recycled. Fortunately, Bui met CH Board member, Elizabeth "Liz" Poong Mark, at a Rotary club picnic and found out about our need for tech for staff. While on a short tour of CH, Bui said while growing up in Vietnam he was apart of the Boy Scouts but wished he had a place like Cameron House to come to for youth programming. Thank You for your generosity, James! What are Summer Leaders Up to? by Rachel Ng, Youth Leadership Development Programs Director Every summer, a huge team of Cameron House high school leaders work together to teach games, have cookouts together, and go camping with youth. While we do miss all their familiar faces, our high schoolers are still staying active through two brand new virtual programs: an Alumni Guest Speaker Series and a Peer Counselor Training program. The Alumni Guest Speaker Series is a platform for high schoolers to meet different Cameron House alumni and learn about that person’s job and career. We talk with a new person every week, and so far, we’ve heard from lawyers Jenn Hom and Chris Young, Dr. Don Ng, and businesswoman Lisa Fung! For our last two weeks, youth will be meeting entrepreneur Beverly Yip and performing artist Lenora Lee. It’s not all just listening though! After they hear from the guest speaker, youth have a small discussion group to explore what they heard, ask questions, and reflect if that career interests them. It’s been
fascinating to hear about all types of jobs, and what it takes to get there! Thank you to all the alumni who’ve generously shared their stories to inspire us. The other program is for our Summer Interns, who are experienced veteran leaders that usually interview to become interns. Although they won’t get hands-on leadership development this summer, the new Peer Counselor training program is still imparting valuable professional and personal skills. We’re so happy to have SFUSD counselor Joan Martin train our interns – our six weeks are almost over! The cohort has been working on listening skills, learning how to create a non-judgmental and safe space, and building up their empathy “muscle.” Last week, they identified basic emotions, how the basics branch into the wide and messy world of all other emotions, and most importantly, how to help a client arrive at that understanding of self. By the end of this summer, we hope to put their Peer Counseling skills to use at Friday Night Club, school, and even with their friends! Cameron House Alumni Lisa Fung shares words of advice with high school students Girls on Fire Meets in Person (at a Social Distance)! by Julia Lin, Youth Engagement Programs Coordinator Girls On Fire is a female space at Cameron House focused on building a strong, supportive community of young womxn. Normally meeting on a monthly basis in-person, they discuss content and topics inspired by what young girls are interested in. For the past few months, the group has been meeting virtually since the shelter-in-place order was announced in March. The youth spent many of those hours cooking every kind of food, from egg souffles and scallion pancakes to fresh brown sugar boba. Although the girls would never pass up a chance to eat, the virtual sessions were starting to reach a plateau. In July, GOF decided to host in-person socially distanced programming. We've spent the
past two weeks gathering to do some self-care for our bodies and our minds through covid-appropriate crafts (making tie-dyed masks), screening the shows we've been eager to watch in good company (Love, Victor) and taking an urban hike to reconnect with our city! We will be meeting until August 13th, when the program will take a break to reassess what programming will look like in the fall. Here's what some of the girls had to say about meeting together in person for the first time in months: "It's really nice to be able to just go outside and see my friends, I can't do anything at home and it gets boring real fast. It's nice to have a schedule and not just sleep in all day." "I have been a total hermit crab. My mom was excited to hear that something could get me out of bed. Plus, we get to go get boba, so I'm always down for that." We have been continuously updating our Bilingual Covid-19 Resource page that can direct you to helpful information on where to find food, at-home food delivery for the elderly, guides to filing unemployment, where to get tested for COVID-19, and more!
