God bless Patrick Walsh Principal BOARD FAREWELL & WELCOME It is with great sadness the Board of Trustees farewells Carmel Veitch who has served the College with dedication and loyalty over the last four years. She has Chaired the Property & Finance Committee and led the Board as Deputy Chair. Her oversight of the schools finances and property developments was outstanding, ensuring the schools strong position. Carmel also ensured as a Proprietor’s Representative that our Catholic Character remained authentic and animated. We owe her a deep debt of gratitude. The Board received with great sadness, the resignation of Jonathan Temm, who was a Parents’ Representative for two terms. I extend to him on behalf of the Board and school community, our heartfelt gratitude for his outstanding contribution to the school. He was the Chair of our International Committee and member of the Property and Finance Committee. His legal, financial and strategic advice to the Board and Principal were of the highest quality. We welcome Dr Shash Patel to the Board as a co-opted member. He has had two children who have graduated from JPC and one child remaining in Year 10. He is Chair of the Rotorua Indian Association and is regarded as a leader in dentistry in the Bay of Plenty. He has a strong business background and record of community engagement. We look forward to his contribution to the Board. John Paul Gaston: Chair John Paul College Board of Trustees JPC SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK: 14-19 September This year John Paul College is recognising Social Justice Week at school. Each week leading up to this we will be looking at one of the Catholic Social Justice Principles. As part of our commitment to these principles, and our commitment to upcycling we have decided, in consultation with Whakaora Rotorua, that we would like to ask for donations of clean towels which still have some life left in them. Alongside this if you would like to donate any toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, tooth paste etc , this would be welcomed. These can be dropped at the main office any time from now on. We are also planning a coin trail in week 9 and this is to purchase Christmas presents for young teenagers, who often miss out at this time of year. The Social Justice principle we are looking at in Week 6 is Solidarity. The Catholic social teaching principle of solidarity is about recognising others as our brothers and sisters and actively working for their good. In our connected humanity, we are invited to build relationships - whakawhanaungatanga - to understand what life is like for others who are different from us. Kind regards Veronica Aislabie TIC Caritas E: veronica.aislabie@jpc.school.nz

The level 2 alert for Coronavirus has seen a lot of complexity being involved in rugby with some schools not playing, traveling or hosting games. JPC The 1st XV was the only team to play last weekend, travelling away to Trident in Whakatane. Over the last few seasons this has been a difficult assignment and Saturday proved to be no different. 2020 The haka performed by both sides set the scene for a high intensity game. Both teams came out firing from both barrels with JPC dominating field position for most of the 1st half. This was however not reflected on the scoreboard as Trident held a 14 – nil lead at half time as they took the limited opportunities that they had and turned them into points. Just before half time Trident had a player sent from the field for punching. JPC never took the opportunity of having a one man advantage and in some instances the team playing one man ‘grow an extra leg’. Trident again took all their opportunities that they had and carved up the JPC team in a period of 15 minutes to zoom the score out to 36 – nil. JPC managed to get a couple of late tries to bring the score back to 36 – 12. The second half was full of errors and the team need to learn to take their chances and be more clinical. Marcos Black, Logan Hawthorne and Finn Gielen-Lilley played well in the forwards while the brothers of Keegan and Ben Comber were solid in the backs. We look forward to next week’s game at JPC against Mt Maunganui. JPC U14 v Aquinas/TWOM Saturday 29th 10.30am @ Aquinas/TWOM JPC U16 v Bye JPC 1st XV v Mt Maunganui Saturday 29th, Midday @ JPC Richard Haigh 027 7773445 HOCKEY Thank you to the players and parents/caregivers who have been supporting the processes in place under Alert Level 2 at the Rotorua Hockey facility. 1st X1 Girls’ Hockey The rescheduled game against Whakatane is 12 Noon, Thursday, 3rd September with a departure date from JPC at around 10am. I watched the 1st X1 boys’ team last Thursday night. The team is rebuilding with a number of young players new to the team. A good result against WHHS 1st X1, a 4 - 2 win. The JPC Mixed team have started the 2nd round with a 4nil win over the TNT Mixed team. The team has continued on from not conceding any games in the 1st round. The JPC Black team are well placed in the Intermediate competition. The JPC Blue team is developing well, with a mix of new and established players.
