Jet Fly-in 2021 Event report 06:00 on the 7th of March 2021, the early morning air is cool and calm. Blue skies seem to be the order of the day, after the previous night’s thunderstorm. Jet pilots around Gauteng are making their way to the south of Johannesburg for an event that has not been seen in a long time.
The annual RMAC Jet Fly-in. This year saw several entries, with Jets ranging from all sizes, shapes, and materials. A strong field of Electric ducted fans also made their presence felt. The scene was set, and the pilots eager to start tearing up the skies. 08:30, Pilots Briefing. Everyone was welcomed to RMAC by chairman Matthys Botha, who handed the safety briefing over to safety officer Terry Hamilton. James Bennet the event organizer informed all the pilots about the prizes that were up for grabs, and with the formalities completed the day could get underway. The sounds of fuel pumps and portable compressors were overwhelmed by the awe-inspiring sounds of turbine jets spooling up within the pit area. Checks completed, all covers locked, fuelled up and ready to go. Take off. The rumbling sound of an RC Jet rolling down the runway at speed is a sight to see, and the “oooh’s” and “aaah’s” were soon to be heard from the crowds in the spectator area. After each successful flight, each pilot was awarded with a round of applause and it was time for the next pilot to take to the skies. RMAC

Prize giving: As with all events, there are winners and then there are, well the other ones. Various prizes were awarded to the pilots, with some having some excess humour attached. We start off with the Best of show awards. Pilots Choice Award: This is the award, chosen by the pilots, for the pilots and I must agree. A scratch-built representation of a North American T-2 Buckeye built and flown by Abraham Grobler all the way from Secunda. Congratulations, and thank you for showcasing such a nice plane. Best Scale Turbine Jet: 1st place was awarded to Davon Lambrecht Best Sport Jet: with his de Havilland Vampire a true representation of scale, not only on the ground 1st place, Marius Cronje but also in the sky. with his Futura Sport Jet, This aircraft flies like it's on rails. 2nd place was awarded to Chris Allsopp 2nd place was Sanjay Cana with his equally with his Eurofighter Jet in the Swiss colour scheme. impressive Alenia Aermacchi MB-339 in the UAE Colour scheme.
Best EDF: 1st place Sherwin Beretta with his MIG 29 Fulcrum Fastest Jet and EDF’s of the day was awarded to the following pilots: Jet: Neville Wright, with his Formula 1 Inspired Feibao Viper. Forget about low and slow, we do it fast so the feeling can last. EDF: Pierre Du Plessis with his EDF Mirage, is still tearing up the skies across Johannesburg. With there being a class for the fastest, we cannot leave out the slowest. Slowest EDF of the day was awarded to Pierre Du Plessis who flew a EDF AL-37 Airliner decorated in the FLY SAFAIR colour scheme, a real head turner when it takes to the sky.
Slowest Turbine Jet, and this one was a bit controversial, as by the time we had to award this, the real “slow flyer” has already left, and we had to choose the next best thing. The unlucky winner turned out to be Craig Williams and if his Jet was the slowest one of the day, the other Jets must have been pretty damn fast! And now for the not so lucky winners, our crash of the day award, went to Chris Allsopp, luckily there was no serious damage other than nose gear damage, but we had to award it to him since he managed to achieve this, twice on the day. Spanner of the day. As with all events, there is always the member who had everything ready to go, only to be plagued by gremlins on the day. And instead of having awesome flights, gets to work on the hobby all day long. This award goes to Harty Borcherds, who for most of the day had the pit area buzzing with commotion. All in all, we had a successful day, with several spectators showing up to enjoy the fun filled day with us. We hope you all had a wonderful time and hope to see you at our next Jet Fly-in scheduled for around the same time next year.
