WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS
Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God,
who creates us,
redeems us,
and calls us by name.
Amen.
Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one
another.
Silence is kept for reflection.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
and your beloved children.
We have turned our faces away from your glory
when it did not appear as we expected.
We have rejected your word
when it made us confront ourselves.
We have failed to show hospitality
to those you called us to welcome.
Accept our repentance for the things we have done
and the things we have left undone.
For the sake of Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.
Forgive us and lead us, that we may bathe
in the glory of your Son born among us,
and reflect your love for all creation.
Amen.
Rejoice in this good news:
In + Christ Jesus, your sins are forgiven.
You are descendants of the Most High,
adopted into the household of Christ,
and inheritors of eternal life.
Live as freed and forgiven children of God.
Amen.

                                  2
GATHERING SONG: Rise, Shine, You People!
1 Rise, shine, you people! Christ the Lord has entered
     our human story; God in him is centered.
     He comes to us, by death and sin surrounded,
     with grace unbounded.
2    See how he sends the pow'rs of evil reeling;
     he brings us freedom, light and life and healing.
     All men and women, who by guilt are driven,
     now are forgiven.
3 Come, celebrate; your banners high unfurling,
     your songs and prayers against the darkness hurling.
     To all the world go out and tell the story
     of Jesus' glory.
4 Tell how the Father sent the Son to save us.
     Tell of the Son, who life and freedom gave us.
     Tell how the Spirit calls from ev'ry nation
     God's new creation.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let us pray. Almighty and ever-living God,
increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and love; and that we
may obtain what you promise, make us love what you
command, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and
Lord.
Amen.

FIRST READING: Jeremiah 1:4-10
A reading from Jeremiah.
4
 Now the word of the Lord came to me saying,
  5
   “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
                                             3
and before you were born I consecrated you;
  I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
6
 Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I
am only a boy.” 7But the Lord said to me,
  “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’;
  for you shall go to all to whom I send you,
  and you shall speak whatever I command you.
  8
   Do not be afraid of them,
  for I am with you to deliver you,
  says the Lord.”
9
 Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the
Lord said to me,
  “Now I have put my words in your mouth.
  10
    See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms,
  to pluck up and to pull down,
  to destroy and to overthrow,
  to build and to plant.”
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALM: Psalm 71:1-6 (read responsively)
 1
  In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;
    let me never be put to shame.
 2
  In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free;
    incline your ear to me and save me.
 3
  Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe;
    you are my crag and my stronghold.
 4
  Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
    from the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor.
 5
  For you are my hope, O Lord God,
    my confidence since I was young.
 6
  I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from
    my mother’s womb you have been my strength;
    my praise shall be always of you.

                                 4
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
A reading from 1 Corinthians.
1
 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not
have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2And if I have
prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but
do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give away all my possessions,
and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have
love, I gain nothing.
    4
     Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or
arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not
irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but
rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes
all things, endures all things.
    8
     Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an
end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come
to an end. 9For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in
part; 10but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an
end. 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a
child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end
to childish ways. 12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we
will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully,
even as I have been fully known. 13And now faith, hope, and love
abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL: Luke 4:21-30
The holy gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.
21
  Then [Jesus] began to say to [all in the synagogue in Nazareth,]
“Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22All
spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that
came from his mouth. They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23He
said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,
‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your
                                   5
hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’ ”
24
  And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the
prophet’s hometown. 25But the truth is, there were many widows in
Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three
years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the
land; 26yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at
Zarephath in Sidon. 27There were also many lepers in Israel in the
time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except
Naaman the Syrian.” 28When they heard this, all in the synagogue
were filled with rage. 29They got up, drove him out of the town, and
led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that
they might hurl him off the cliff. 30But he passed through the midst
of them and went on his way.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON: Pastor Jeff Greathouse

10:30-CHILDREN'S MESSAGE

10:30-PEACE
The peace of Christ be with you always.
And also with you.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Blessed Assurance
1 Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
    Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
    Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
    born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Refrain
   This is my story, this is my song,
   praising my Savior, all the day long:
   this is my story, this is my song,
   praising my Savior all the day long.

                                  6
2   Perfect submission, perfect delight,
    visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
    angels descending bring from above
    echoes of mercy, whispers of love. Refrain
3   Perfect submission, all is at rest;
    I in my Savior am happy and blest,
    watching and waiting, looking above,
    filled with his goodness, lost in his love. Refrain

give them patience; when dejected, give them hope; and when
alone, assure them of the support of your holy people. We ask this

OFFERING

MUSIC DURING OFFERING: Jason Palmer

OFFERING PRAYER
Blessed are you, O God,
Sovereign of the universe.
You offer us new beginnings
and guide us on our journey.
Lead us to your table,
nourish us with this heavenly food,
and prepare us to carry your love
to a hungry world,

                                 9
in the name of Christ our light.
Amen.

DIALOGUE
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE
In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

LORD’S PRAYER
Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
    hallowed be thy name,
    thy kingdom come,
    thy will be done,
         on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those
         who trespass against us;
                                   10
and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
     and the power, and the glory,
     forever and ever. Amen.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Come to God’s table.
There is a place for you and enough for all.

The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you.
and each person may respond Amen.

Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,

Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.
2 Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow'r to save us.
Make us your living voice. Refrain

3 Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
                                11
shared until all are fed. Refrain
4 Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone. Refrain
5 Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
signs of your kingdom come. Refrain

1    The Spirit sends us forth to serve;
     we go in Jesus' name
     to bring glad tidings to the poor,
     God's favor to proclaim.
2 We go to comfort those who mourn
     and set the burdened free;
     where hope is dim, to share a dream
     and help the blind to see.

     to scatter joy like seed
     and, all our days, to cherish life,
     to do the loving deed.
