Thank you. Opening Words: (Ann Weems- Kneeling in Jerusalem) Just when I thought there would be no more light in the Jerusalem sky, the Bright and Morning Star appeared and the darkness has not overcome it. Lighting the Christ Candle Musical Reflection – VU 144 “Were You There” Were you there when he burst the bonds of death? Were you there when he burst the bonds of death? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when he burst the bonds of death? Easter Acclamation and Call to Worship – responsive Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Leader: Let us give thanks to God, for God is good. People: God’s love goes on forever and ever. Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Let us worship God. Prayer of Approach –responsive Leader: Yours is the glory, O God, for raising Jesus from the darkness of death. People: Yours is the glory, O Christ, for being prepared,
through your love and your sacrifice, to conquer death and give us the gift of eternal life. Leader: And, as if that were not enough, you greet us by name, as you greeted Mary in the garden, and transform our lives forever with your Easter life. People: Risen Lord, we worship and adore you and pray that the Holy Spirit, your life in us, will so conform us to your image, that we radiate your glory here, through our rejoicing and praise, and in all the places where people's lives are still affected by the powers of death and sin. Leader: Yours is the glory, O God, for showing us the human face of your love in Jesus, your Son, our risen Lord. People: Yours is the glory, risen Lord Jesus, and we rejoice that 'endless is the victory that you over death have won'. Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Musical Reflection – VU 173 “Thine is the Glory” 1 Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son: endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where the body lay. Thine is the glory, risen, conquering Son: endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won. 2 Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb! Lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing, for the Lord now liveth: death hath lost its sting. Refrain 3 No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is nought without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conquerors, through thy deathless love; bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above. Refrain 2
Minute for Mission: “Meaningful work helps Jesse—and all of us—thrive” After a brain injury and the death of his mother, Jesse found himself homeless and sleeping in a storage unit. Now, thanks to employment training and support programs run by Mission & Service partner Stella’s Circle combined with his hard work, Jesse is a trained greenhouse technician. He leads a new social enterprise that grows produce for sale. One day, Jesse hopes to supply restaurants with the produce he and others grow. What does work mean for him? “It means maintaining my independence. It means building confidence. It means instilling purpose. It makes me feel functional,” says Jesse. Supporting job training and employment programs has never been more important. Because of the pandemic, 114 million more jobs were lost in 2020 than in 2019. Four times more jobs were lost during the pandemic than during the global financial crisis in 2009. All of us work at something, whether we are paid or unpaid. When our values match what we spend time working at, we find meaning in life. People who are unable to work not only struggle to pay the bills, but their sense of meaning and self worth suffers too. That’s why your generosity through Mission & Service supports job training programs here at home and around the world. Meaningful work helps us thrive. Maybe that’s why, in the Bible, “work” is mentioned more than 800 times. In the Easter story, the work of Passover preparations set the table for Jesus’ divine work order: “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” Mission & Service supports programs that help people find meaningful employment and renewed life. It’s one of the ways you and I participate in God’s holy, resurrecting work every day. Thank you for your generous support. Mission Prayer: from Song of Faith God is creative and self-giving, generously moving in all the near and distant corners of the universe. Nothing exists that does not find its source in God. Our first response to God’s providence is gratitude. We sing thanksgiving. Invitation to Confession – one One: Like the first witnesses of the resurrection, we too, come to the empty tomb with varied responses. We hear the good news that Jesus has risen, but so often the evidence for this is difficult to detect in our 3
lives. Let us offer God our prayer of confession. Prayer of Confession – responsive One: For regrets that have hardened into bitterness. All: Forgive us God. Give us the courage to love. One: For righteousness that has distorted into certainty. All: Forgive us God. Give us the courage to doubt. One: When we should have spoken out, but stayed silent. All: Forgive us God. Give us the courage to speak. One: When we've allowed our fear to be our church's compass. All: Forgive us God. Give us the courage to imagine. One: When our indecision has granted legitimacy to injustice. All: Forgive us God. Give us the courage to act. One: When self-concern has precluded concern for others and our world. All:Forgive us God. Give us the courage to dare. Amen. Assurance of Forgiveness – responsive One: Remember the costly act of Jesus which led to victory over sin and death. An act which gives us the gift of a new beginning - guilt free and graced by love. The tomb is empty because Christ is risen. All: We live in hope as God’s forgiven Easter people. Thanks be to God! Musical Reflection: VU 179 “Hallelujah, Hallelujah Give Thanks” Hallelujah, hallelujah. Give thanks to the risen Christ; hallelujah, hallelujah! Give praise to God's name. 1. Jesus is Lord of all the earth, firstborn of all creation. R 2. Spread the good news o'er all the earth: Jesus has died and is risen. R 3. We have been crucified with Christ, now we shall live for ever. R 4. Come let us praise the living God, joyfully sing to our Saviour. R 4
Scripture Reading: John 20: 1-18 1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes. 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her. Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Video Anthem Sing-Along – with Jim and Jean Strathdee “Sing a Happy Hallelujah” Sing a happy alleluia, sing it out with heart and style -- we're the echo of God's laughter, we're the image of God's smile. Alleluia, all creation, alleluia, everyone! (X2) 5
We're the proof of God's good humor, we're the twinkle in God's eye, made to shine, reflect the glory, given light and space to fly. Refrain Sarah laughed at God's good timing, Mary sang and David danced, Jesus smiled and hugged the children -- so is life for us enhanced. Refrain Every day sing alleluia! We are loved, though so absurd, human, foolish, chosen people, God still takes us at our word! Refrain Message: Musical Reflection VU 352 “I Danced in the Morning” 1 I danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, and I came from heaven and I danced on the earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth. Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the dance, said he, and I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, and I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. 2 I danced for the scribe and the pharisee, but they would not dance and they would not follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me and the dance went on. Refrain 3 I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and left me there on a cross to die. Refrain 4 I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; it's hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I'd gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. Refrain 6
5 They cut me down and I leap up high; I am the life that will never, never die; I'll live in you if you'll live in me; I am the Lord of the dance, said he. Refrain Offertory Invitation and Prayer– one/all Jesus Christ is Risen! We share our gifts and tithes that this good news might be known throughout the world! Let us pray: All: God of hope, on this glad day we bring our gifts to you, asking that they bloom like Easter flowers, wakening the world to your gift of love. We give thanks for the dawn of your new day, for the rising of the Sun of righteousness, who fills the earth with light and life. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. Prayers of the People Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Musical Reflection VU 155 “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” 1 Jesus Christ is risen today, hallelujah! our triumphant holy day, hallelujah! who did once, upon the cross, hallelujah! suffer to redeem our loss.
