Plastic gloves improperly disposed of, heightened use of aerosol disinfectants, take out containers, plastic water bottles. These are the environmental repercussions of Covid. So what does the research tell us we need to do to stay safe and what are we doing unnecessarily which in turn is causing harm to our environment? Ana María Rule, an assistant professor in Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and an expert on aerosols and particulate matter, advocates for reducing their impact—by using fewer of them, replacing them with reusable options when possible, disposing of them properly, and developing environmentally friendly alternatives. Below is a link to the full article and other suggestions for reducing the environmental impact of Covid. https://hub.jhu.edu/2021/05/05/environmental-toll-of-covid-19/ 2) Volunteer Opportunity - Adopt a Spot Weed Pull - June 27, 9am - Snowy Reach Tot Lot We are in need of volunteers to help us weed the Adopt a Spot location at the Snowy Reach tot lot. Let us know if you can lend a hand as we pull weeds around the native plants we planted in this location last fall. RSVP to besswlvb@gmail.com. 4) Water those trees! Did you receive a tree from the Wilde Lake giveaway this spring? You should give your tree a deep watering at least once a week during the summer months. Twice if we are in a drought situation. A deep watering means 1-2 gallons, poured slowly at the base of the trunk. The water should soak into the ground and not runoff away from the base of the tree. 5) Pollinator Week - June 21-27, 2021 Pollinator Week 2021 kicks off in Howard County on Saturday, June 19 th at the Howard County Conservancy and continues throughout the week.
