ESTATE NEWS ROSELLA CUP 9th of August 2019 Women's Day T he ladies of Silver Lakes Golf Club had their annual Rosella Cup on Women's Day. While planning it, we were concerned that it was a long weekend and specifically falling on the Friday of the long weekend. We were considering skipping this year, because we were worried that we would not have much interest. Well, we should have realised that the ladies golfers of Silver Lakes NEVER disappoint and especially when Rosella, Style inspired by Elegance, is involved as the main sponsor. The ladies astounded me, as they always do and we had 56 participants, of which only about seven were visitors. The rest were all members! What a fantastic day we had! The weather was perfect and our first four-ball went off at 07:34 and the last four ball at 08:22. We were greeted by Ann Margaret, Beandré and Ashley from Rosella with beautiful gift bags / make-up bags. There was a Rosella Pop-up Boutique and some quick shopping before moving on to the T-boxes.

LIFESTYLE Photography 101 by Albert Roos I n my previous article we briefly discussed the future of photography and that mirrorless cameras will become our future. I have been shooting with Canons DSLR cameras for many years, and recently a representative from Sony contacted me with an invitation to attend a workshop - I was curious and agreed. The workshop ended with an offer to test the Sony camera gear. I recently made use of that offer and took the Sony A9 mirrorless camera with an extra battery grip, the Sony 70 – 200 F2.8 lens as well as the Sony 100 – 400 F5.6 lens to the Pilanesberg. Also included was the A9 from the previous A7 by doubling its 2x Converter as well as the Metabones power. ESTATE NEWS Back to ‘my’ environmental team. As you will see in the photos, they have been busy in and around the Estate and the Clubhouse. Topsoil went onto the lawns of the street corners and some new corner planters went up. Finishing the new deck in front of the Chapel at the Clubhouse, putting in a reclaimed slide and fixing the pool. The soccer nets and tennis courts have also been under maintenance and are now ready for use! Edging was also put in to edge the gardens and in the new season this traditionally seen as the ‘backyard’ area, will also become a tidy and neat area we can be proud of! New signage went up to match the signage they are putting up on the street corners. This is still part of our programme of simplifying, tidying up and modernising the look-and- feel of the Estate. An example in our environmental portfolio are people who transgress onto the golf course and the game reserve open spaces. These communal areas belong to ALL the homeowners combined and no individual has the right to develop part of these areas. It is for the use of the general public, our homeowners. Henk and his team are really trying hard to reclaim these areas for the Estate, even the historic ones which have or have not been addressed, but homeowners ignored the summons. Henk, thanks for this. We know it is an unpleasant task, but thanks. This not only makes life easier for the committees to decide what the look-and-feel of areas are, but also the use of areas. ESTATE NEWS Before I finish… maybe I can just ask one favour? The dog fences our residents put up for their small dogs in order to keep them in their yards, need to be put up on the inside of the existing fences. It really becomes a bit untidy with all kinds of plastic and metal netting or screening being tied to the outside of fences with pieces of wire or cable ties. I also want to say thank you to all the homeowners who took note of having ‘friendlier’ sidewalks and have chosen to use the irrigation protector blocks instead of the concrete balls. Thanks a million – it really looks awesome! To end my article this month on a positive note, I again noticed, even though winter was still in full swing, when I walked how beautiful our Estate and most of the houses are. We all know the saying ‘one has only one chance to make a first impression’ and this is what I believe of our sidewalks and front doors. They can be inviting, just neutral or even off-putting. Does it say anything about who lives there? Maybe, but have a look at some of the beautiful gems I found on the Estate. Have a wonderful spring! See you all at Spring Day 2019 0n Saturday the 14th of September. Corlia Mathews 28 INTRA MUROS SEPTEMBER 2019
LIFESTYLE SPRING BREAK T he warm weather seems to have arrived early this year. Spring is upon us and it’s time to draw back the curtains, open the windows and doors and let in the natural sunlight and fresh air. Just as you take a break from your winter wardrobe, so too should you take a break from your chunky, warm winter dècor. Follow these guidelines to freshen up your space: Let there be flowers Monet said, “I must have flowers, always, always”. Well who am I to argue, especially at this time of year? LIFESTYLE whiff in the air one of the first clues that Winter is ending? Spread spring’s breath throughout your home by adding tropical and citrusy scents in the form of candles and diffusers. Keep colours cool Spring is associated with bright colours, as seen in nature. While you’re adding bright pops of colour, guard against making your interior space feel warmer than you’d like it to while the mercury rises outside. Orange, red and yellow certainly are bright and happy, but they are ‘warm’ colours which, accordingly, create a sense of coziness and intimacy – better suited to the cooler months. A similar effect is created by dark colours such as bottle green and navy. If you’d prefer a sense of cool and calm, opt for cool colours like pale blues, greens and lilacs, synonymous with water and sky. Think duck egg blue, seafoam green and lavender (don’t you feel cool and calm just thinking about them?). Feel free to add some bright accent colours like turquoise and coral. Lighten up on the textiles Just as we use fabrics and texture to warm things up in winter, the reverse applies in the warmer months. There’s no need to do away with throws in spring – simply exchange them for their lightweight counterparts. Velvet remains very en vogue but a light, breathable cotton or linen scatter cushion is far more inviting on a hot, sunny day. Speaking of letting in fresh air and sunshine – sheer curtains do just this whilst creating a light and airy feeling. If, however, you have a room that receives too much sun you could use block out curtains to keep your cool. Your bedding also needs a spring makeover. Whilst packing away your winter sheeting and blankets, consider a new duvet cover – choose light fabrics like linen and cotton. Don’t forget your soaking sanctuary – if, like me, you like to exchange your bubbly Audrey Maidwell is an interior decorator and tub for a fresh shower when things get hot, second hand furniture and décor retailer, invest in some lightweight Turkish bath owner of Second Chance Furniture & Decor. towels. LIFESTYLE SLEEPWritten – byYOUR SECRET WEAPON! Nicoleen Davies, director of Life Talk Forum. (Special reference to Matt Walker’s TED talk 2019 – Sleep is your superpower.) W e all struggle to sleep at some point in time, but sleep is something that needs our attention because it is so important. With school pressures and the impact of technology, our children are at enormous risk. It is imperative to teach our children good sleeping habits, help reinforce them and practice them ourselves! Researchers have found unquestionable links between lack of sleep, mood, health consequences, impaired cognitive function and risky behaviour. Sleep is food for the brain, essential for memory and learning and, yes longevity. The more you sleep the longer you could live and the healthier you may be. Seep builds your immune system. Natural killer cells in our body, our immune assassins, work to eliminate unwanted elements in your body, like cancer cells, whilst you sleep. Sleeping four hours or less can reduce their activity by 70%! Important restorative body functions and brain activity occur during sleep. Teens and adults need seven to nine hours of sleep. Six hours is not good enough. Chronic sleep deprivation can affect your mental wellbeing, increase sport injury rates by 60% and importantly, reduce academic performance at school (and your own performance in the workplace). Consider this… • Children, at any age, who are sleep- deprived, can display the same “symptoms” as children with ADHD. Your child could be misdiagnosed when all they need is regular, quality sleep. • The less sleep you have, the higher your risk of injury in sport. Research found that sportsman who slept more than seven hours, were 20-30% better at skilled performance the following day, than at the end of their practice the previous day. Sleep improved their skill, muscle memory and had recuperative benefits. • During deep sleep, big powerful brainwaves and electrical activity act as file transfers, converting new and short term memories into long term memories. Sleep deprivation literally shuts down the brain and memory. • We need sleep after learning in order to save the information and, in fact, we need sleep before learning in order to 40 INTRA MUROS SEPTEMBER 2019
