First Circular International Symposium on Edible Alliums: Challenges and Opportunities February 9-12, 2019 Venue Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration Pune (Maharashtra), India www.dogr.res.in ISA DOGR Organized by Indian Society of Alliums ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research Rajgurunagar-410505, Pune (Maharashtra) www.dogr.res.in 1
Context and Rationale The genera Allium includes hundreds of species that are cultivated worldwide for consumption as well as ornamental purposes. Commercially important edible alliums are onion, garlic, leek shallot, chive etc. Among all cultivated species onion and garlic are exclusively grown and consumed in the form of fresh, processed products and in value added forms .They are known to have great medicinal properties which are used to cure wide variety of human disorders. At global level, current onion production is to the tune of 88.47 million tonns and that of garlic 24.93 million tons. India is second largest producer of onion and garlic in the world with production of 20.93 and 1.62 million tons, coming from 1.32 million and 0.28 million hectares area, respectively. The productivity of long day onions range between 60 to 100 tonns/ha, while that of short day onion between 10 to 50 tons/ha. Productivity of temperate garlic is between 20 to 40 tons/ha, while that of subtropical short day garlic ranges between 4 to 15 tons/ha. With the increasing population worldwide and change in pattern of food habit, the demand for onion and garlic and other species is increasing. There is hardly any scope for horizontal growth of these commodities as other food and commercial crops compete for area. The world challenge is with vertical growth by enhancing productivity and availability through scientific and high- tech innovations. Scientists worldwide are engaged in developing better genotypes resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses. Reduction in yield due to foliar diseases, pest, climatic aberrations, suboptimal management practises are the major issues, besides average and poor genotypes. High storage losses reduce the net availability of these commodities. Fluctuations in demand and supply greatly affect the trade and farmer income. Thus challenges and constraints are many to be addressed for enhancing and sustaining enhanced productivity. In order to address the challenges and issues, in depth 2
deliberations to analyse past developments and plan for future among scientists, policy makers, traders, farmers, regulatory authorities and other stakeholders are highly essential. Indian society of Alliums in collaborations with ICAR–Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajgurunagar, Pune has planned to organize “International Symposium on Edible Alliums: Challenges and Opportunities” during 9-12 February, 2019 at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration, Pune (Maharashtra). The symposium is designed to provide common forum for discussion to researchers, students, farmers, policy makers, traders, seeds men to share their views on recent developments, challenges and mitigation strategies. Themes The symposium will be organized in following broad themes: 1. Genetics, Genomics and Breeding Alliums genetic resources and biodiversity, underutilized Alliums, conventional breeding advances, molecular and biotechnological approaches, transgenics, resistance breeding, etc. 2. Crop Husbandry Efficient use of natural resources, sustainable production, organic farming, cropping system approach, weed management, fertigation, protected cultivation, good agricultural practices (GAP), etc. 3. Plant Health Management Management of biotic stresses, extent of losses, innovative ways of crop health management, quarantine, etc. 4. Abiotic Stress Management Impact of abiotic factors on crop production and their effective management. Impact of climate change on these crops and climate resilient production, crop modelling, etc.
5. Quality Seed Production Sustainable quality seed production, seed storage, seed purity, seed quality, disease free seed production. 6. Engineering in Agriculture Mechanization in direct seeding, transplanting, dibbling, intercultural operations, plant protection, harvesting, grading, packing, etc. 7. Post-Harvest Management, Storage and Value Addition Innovative ways for reducing storage losses, on-farm storage, cool chain management and cold storage, value added products for consumption, value addition by folk medicine, therapeutic values. 8. Trade Related Issues Domestic as well export marketing of bulbs, processed products, seed, value added products, trade related policy issues, market requirements, etc. 9. Socio-Economic and Policy Issues Technology assessment, refinement and dissemination, cost of production, public-private partnership, socio-economic and gender issues. 4
