Making History: More than 300 D155 Students Named State Scholars
For the first time in District 155’s history, 306 District 155 students have been named as 2016-17 State Scholars
by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). This number is up from 284 students named from the
 Class of 2015.

Students’ ACT and SAT test scores, class rank at the end of junior year, and class size determine state scholars.
Those students identified regularly graduate in the top ten percent of Illinois high school seniors.

Board of Education Update
Crystal Lake South Presentation
Crystal Lake South High School hosted the December Board of Education meeting. STEM Division Leader
Todd Graba, teacher Katie Bulman, and students presented about the forensics course which provides students
with hands-on opportunities and is based on true crimes. Students explained how crime scene evidence is
collected, processed and analyzed, and how they reach a conclusion.

The Aevidum Student Group also presented with Josh Nobilio, student services coordinator, and Anne Santucci,
teacher and group sponsor. Students presented on club initiatives to support each student at Crystal Lake South
and how the group is partnering with community organizations like National Alliance on Mental Illness in
McHenry County.

Student Recognition
The Board of Education recognized Valerie Tarazi,
a sophomore at Prairie Ridge, for winning the state
championship in the 100 Breaststroke with an All
American automatic qualifying time and second place in
the 200 IM.

Treasurer’s Report
The state currently owes D155 more than $900,000 in
mandated state quarterly reimbursements. Fortunately, at
this time General State Aid continues to be paid twice a
month.

Year 2015 Tax Levy
The Board of Education voted (5-1-1) to approve a flat tax levy for 2015. This flat tax levy is estimated to save
D155 taxpayers a collective $775,000 in today’s dollars every year moving forward. This amounts to a $2.4
million savings to taxpayers in just three years and almost $4 million over the next five years.

Boundary & Enrollment
Superintendent Dr. Johnnie Thomas presented a summary of the Kasarda Demographics Study. The study
projects enrollment for CHSD155 at 5,689 students for the 2020-2021 school year. Nearly 6,500 students are
currently enrolled in D155. This enrollment is due to declining enrollment in feeder districts. In summary,
District 155 will see a significant drop in enrollment over the next ten years. District administration will
continue to analyze the report and projections.

Central Teacher Named WGN’s Teacher of the Month
WGN chose Mike Smalley, a social studies teacher at Central, for Teacher of the Month in December. Chad
Harrah, a junior, is enrolled in Smalley’s U.S. History class and nominated him.

“I never liked history until this class. Mr. Smalley
makes class interesting and fun,” said Harrah.

In addition to being named Teacher of the Month,
Saint Xavier presented Mike Smalley with a check
for $1,000 which can be used for classroom supplies.

“I’ve been given great opportunities, and I’m
surrounded by great people - students and teachers,”
said Smalley. Watch WGN’s story here.

South Students Explore Career Paths at Annual Expo
Crystal Lake South High School held its third annual
Career Expo on December 7. More than 40 local
businesses, colleges, and trade schools spoke with
students about post-secondary education options and
potential career paths. Students interviewed vendors and
filled out a questionnaire while attending the expo.

Joe Mueller, a 2015 Crystal Lake South graduate,
shared with students that the Career Expo and his job
at McDonalds allowed him to strengthen his skills and
achieve his aspirations. He is a manager at McDonald’s
and was recently awarded full tuition reimbursement to
pursue a degree in human resources.
