life 10 Wednesday, May 19, 2021 Community + Personal Interest in Iron County Walk of Remembrance honors loss of loved ones by Shay Baruffi Iron Count y Today The Walk of Remembrance is an annual event that creates the opportunity for parents, family members, and friends to gather and remember a baby who has died due to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, neonatal or any type of pregnancy or infant loss. This is the 7th year this beautiful event has taken place. “It’s a good thing to have this available to those who have lost a child, just to gather and say the baby’s name. It’s very hard to lose a child. We have these people here in solidarity and support of each other. It’s healthy for people to be emotional about these hard things,” said Laurie Laws, a coordinator of the event. After opening remarks by coordinators of the event; Laurie and Heidi, a heartfelt rendition of Christina Perri’s A Thousand Years was performed on the cello followed by a stunning vocal performance of Over the Rainbow. As ceremonies came to a close and the walk began visitors were able to say who they were walking for on their way out. Guests walked a path lined with photos and loving messages in memory of those who have gone. Coordinator Heidi Hamilton, stated, “Even 20-30 years ago, they would never say anything about it. The baby was just gone and now they’re out of your life, never to be thought of again, but there can be a lot of trauma associated with that. We have this event for people to recognize their lost children.” The Walk of Remembrance is a beautiful way to remember lives lost and to stand with those who have also experienced loss. For more information visit their website at: https://www.walkofremembrance.co.za. Signs to honor and remember loved ones lost were placed along the path during the special Walk of Remembrance. photos by shay baruffi
