WELCOME Welcome on board Proflight Dear Customer, I t has been an interesting four months at Proflight and definitely the most challenging in the airline’s 29 year history. One of our experienced pilots back in the ‘early days’ used the expression; ‘Flexibility is the Key to Airpower’ and we have continued to use this as a mantra at Proflight but with the current situation with a global pandemic raging this saying has never been more true. Proflight has had to reinvent itself in many ways during this period to adapt to the changes and we hope this flexibility will get us through these difficult times. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our customers, our employees and all our suppliers for their ongoing support in what has been a very difficult time for everyone. We have along with many other business had to downsize by around 30 percent, cut back on unnecessary costs and try and diversify our business in order to retain some production during this period. Proflight relies on both business travel and tourism to sustain its route network of 11 destinations. With no international tourism for April- July, very little domestic tourism, and a significant reduction in regional travel we have looked to new markets to keep the airline going. This has included flying two baby elephants from the Kafue National Park to the Lilayi Elephant Orphanage; more about this later in the magazine, transporting day old chickens to our neighbouring countries and more recently bringing in piglets from South Africa! Repatriation flights have taken us to Accra, Entebbe, Nairobi, Luanda, Lilongwe and Johannesburg. For September and October we continue our weekly repatriation flights to Johannesburg for passengers and we offer a cargo service in both directions. As Zambia’s COVID-19 numbers continue to rise we wish you and your families the best of health. Stay home, stay safe and we look forward to flying you again in the not too distant future. BUSINESS BUSINESS of macroeconomic shocks. The AMF could enhance regional payments and currency stability, thereby helping to reduce reliance on external funding, creating a fiscal stabilisation fund and improving terms of trade. The cardinal sin of fiscal policy is an ove-reliance on external debt. This is even more dangerous when the debt incurred is in hard currency while the revenue generated to pay the debt is in local currency. A way to avoid this debt spiral that so many African countries find themselves in is to deepen local capital markets and prevent this currency mismatch. Zambia relied on issuing eurobonds and has borrowed heavily from China and as a result we find ourselves in acute fiscal difficulty. The AMF could act as a catalyst to deepen the reserves of local capital markets. Zambia recently began keeping gold in reserve – to ensure that a certain level of reserves are available to counter a liquidity crisis. With such initiatives in place, Mashigo believes that the AMF would be able to create a continent-wide stabilisation fund. This is normally the preserve of sovereign wealth funds.
