C O N V O C AT I O N 2 0 1 9 Message from the president Dear graduate, It’s finally here – convocation. The day when your hard work and successes, both inside and outside the classroom, are formally recognized in front of your families, friends, mentors and supporters, the day when you will receive your Durham College (DC) credential and the day that marks both an end and a beginning. While your time as a DC student is drawing to a close, the next part of your journey is still to come. Whether continuing with your studies or entering into the world of work, do so with confidence, knowing you’ve learned the skills you need to succeed; skills that have been honed in DC’s classes and labs, during participation in applied research and through field and co-op placements. Thanks to those experiential learning opportunities and your own determination and drive, you are graduating with a competitive advantage. I encourage you to make the most of it. Continue seeking guidance from experts in their fields, be open to the power of mentorship and know that the entire DC community is cheering you on. Please enjoy today’s ceremony. Message
from the board chair
On behalf of the Durham College (DC) Board of Governors, I would like to offer my sincere
congratulations to the class of 2019.
Much of the work we do as a board is conducted during meetings as we gather to discuss DC’s
mission and vision, as well as its strategies and overall governance. We are committed to managing
the college so it can provide the services you need to be successful in your post-secondary career.
Being able to step out of the boardroom to witness students receiving their credentials brings
our efforts sharply into focus. We are able to see the results of those meetings and decisions
represented in each graduate that proudly crosses the convocation stage. It’s an honour to have
played a role in your educational journey and we wish you all the best in the days, months and years
ahead.
We hope you will remember your time at DC with fondness and you will take all that you have
learned to create the life you’ve always dreamed of. If you continue to tackle the future with the
same determination and effort that you put into earning your diploma or certificate, the entire board
has every confidence you will succeed.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Durham College is situated on the Traditional Territory of the Mississaugas and the territory

TOBACCO TIE
CEREMONY
DC’s Indigenous Education Advisory Circle (DCIEAC) helps the college meet
the needs of its First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities. To recognize and honour members
of the DCIEAC, a tobacco tie is being offered during convocation as a sign
of respect and gratitude.
The first of the four Anishinaabe sacred medicines, tobacco is commonly used to open the lines
of communication. When asking a Traditional Knowledge Keeper to share their knowledge or attend an event,
the tobacco tie is exchanged between the two parties. As such, the Traditional Knowledge Keeper agrees
to what is being asked of them and the person offering the tobacco tie is to respect
Indigenous teachings and those who share them.

C O N V O C AT I O N 2 0 1 9 Guest speakers M O N D AY, J U N E 1 0 A N D T U E S D AY, J U N E 1 1 ( M O R N I N G ) Adam Hare Multimedia and Design program (now known as Interactive Media Design), 2006 For over a decade, Adam Hare has devoted his life to being a passionate, creative leader who will constantly think outside of the box. After graduating from Durham College’s (DC) Multimedia and Design program (now known as Interactive Media Design) in 2006, he embarked on a career that has taken him from a young entrepreneur, developing his own clothing line, to managing a creative team at Universal Music Canada. More recently, Adam has made waves in the insurance industry. As president of Petley-Hare Limited Insurance Brokers he is transforming a 100 year-old, traditional business model, into a fast-paced, technology driven organization, that’s soon to distribute its products all across Canada. In 2013, Adam had the pleasure of coming back to Durham College, but this time to teach within the multimedia and design program part-time. In 2016, he was awarded the Young Broker of the Year in Ontario. His latest venture has been co-founding a full-service, digital marketing/consulting agency that works with big name brands and small businesses all across Canada. While maintaining a busy work life, he actively involves himself and gives back to his community. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Insurance Brokers Association of Durham Region, is an Executive Advisor for Lakeridge Health’s young professional committee, Launchpad, and was a past chair for the Whitby Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneurs and Professionals Committee. In his spare time, you can catch Adam enjoying time with his wife and two young kids or on stage sharing stories and speaking to audiences about culture transformation, leadership, social media, technology, branding and marketing.
C O N V O C AT I O N 2 0 1 9 Guest speakers (continued) T U E S D AY, J U N E 1 1 ( A F T E R N O O N A N D E V E N I N G ) Melissa Farrow Social Service Worker, 2009, Child and Youth Worker program (now Child and Youth Care), 2011 Melissa Farrow is a program co-ordinator at the Hospital for Sick Children where she provides direct service and care for kids and their families in the Psychiatry Day Hospital Program. Working with a multi-disciplinary team, she uses the skills learned during her studies in Durham College’s Social Service Worker program, which she graduated from in 2009, and the Child and Youth Worker program (now Child and Youth Care), which she graduated from in 2011. Her role includes counselling through individual, group and family therapy following a cognitive behavioural therapy informed approach, developing individualized care plans, completing psychosocial assessments for psychiatry program referrals and coordinating placements for post- secondary students studying in child and youth counsellor programs. In addition, Melissa supports her alma mater and its students by acting as a field practicum advisor and professor, engaging learners in innovative, active and collaborative instructional material, following student progress, facilitating regular evaluations, providing formal supervision and liaising with the practicum agencies. Prior to joining the Hospital for Sick Children, she worked for a number of community agencies, including Turning Point Youth Services and the Oshawa Community Health Centre, providing care and delivering programs for children and youth. A lifelong learner, Melissa has completed further training from non-violent crisis intervention and suicide prevention to trauma-informed cognitive behavioural therapy and understanding and managing aggressive behaviours. She is also a member of the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Counsellors.
C O N V O C AT I O N 2 0 1 9 Guest speakers (continued) W E D N E S D AY, J U N E 1 2 ( M O R N I N G A N D A F T E R N O O N ) Brandon Bird Level 3 Plumber Apprentice Certificate, 2012 Brandon Bird knew he would need a solid foundation of skills before he could take over leadership of his family’s third-generation plumbing and heating company. While he has been working there for 16 years in various roles, he enrolled in Durham College (DC) and completed his Level 3 Plumber Apprentice Certificate in 2012. A licensed Red Seal plumber, he then returned to the company and continued working his way up the ranks, always looking for ways to grow the business. This included overseeing the acquisition and amalgamation of John McKenzie Plumbing with Bird Mechanical Ltd, allowing the company to offer more services and expand into new markets. In 2016, at just 29 years old, he became the youngest CEO in the company’s history. In 2018 Brandon successfully expanded the current operations into Atlantic Canada, opening the first office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Additionally, he acquired a Civil Contracting Company, R.G. MacDuff Contracting Ltd., to work hand-in-hand with Bird Mechanical Ltd. facilitating better project control and targeting different markets. Since taking the reins Brandon has generated over $32 million in sales revenue while overseeing a team of over 100 employees, 70 of which are tradespeople. Through strategic expansion and service offerings, the company has worked on projects ranging from $100,000 to $20 million; its clients include the Hospital for Sick Children and Cadillac Fairview. Brandon also chairs DC’s Mechanical Techniques – Plumbing Advisory Committee and sits on the Mechanical Contractors Association of Toronto’s Education Committee.

Bruce Affleck Memorial Scholarship Given annually during Durham College’s spring convocation ceremony, this award goes to the highest-ranking graduate of any two- or three-year full-time diploma program (the recipient is not eligible for other college medals). Keri Wilkins - Office Administration - Executive Durham College Medal Awarded to the highest-ranking graduate in any three-year post-secondary program. Neil Gaspar - Computer Programmer Analyst Durham College Medal Awarded to the highest-ranking graduate in any two-year post-secondary program. Michelle Pitman - Social Service Worker Durham College Medal Awarded to the highest-ranking graduate in any one-year post-secondary program. Linda Ballantyne - Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees Durham College Medal Awarded to the highest-ranking graduate in any apprenticeship program. President’s Award of Excellence in Student Leadership This award, with its financial honorarium, recognizes the student who best displays the attributes of leadership and integrity while demonstrating involvement in a variety of campus activities. As a student leader, their behaviour reflects the values of the institution and has significantly impacted the campus by creating an environment supportive of student success for years to come. Congratulations to the 2019 recipient: Andrew Nunez-Alvarez The Doris and Gordon Willey Founder’s Cup for Excellence The Founder’s Cup for Excellence was presented to Durham College on November 30, 1999 by Doris Willey in memory of her husband, Dr. Gordon E. Willey, the college’s founding president (1969-1980). This award, with its financial honorarium, is presented annually to the Durham College student who best demonstrates the attributes of scholarship, leadership, integrity and involvement in college affairs. This reflects the concept of Dr. Willey’s original choice for the college motto – Excellence Through Perseverance. Congratulations to the 2019 recipient: Lindsay Trudell
C O N V O C AT I O N 2 0 1 9 Leadership Awards This award recognizes graduating students who utilize their leadership skills to make valuable contributions to the enhancement of student life on campus. Award recipients demonstrate their leadership skills in a variety of activities and support their peers throughout their time at Durham College. Scholarships Scholarships, recognizing academic excellence, are awarded to the top two full-time students based on GPA in each post-secondary diploma program. Scholarships were previously awarded to students during the course of their study. Congratulations to all of the deserving recipients for your hard work and determination.
