ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and Big Data applied to veterinary diagnostics: the today various approaches of the subject Diagnostics in the Veterinary Field: The Role in Health Surveillance and Disease Identification May 15-17, 2019Wiesbaden, Germany
Infrastructure and components that enable modern computing: devices, networking components, applications, etc, that allow us to interact with DIGITAL WORD. Massive volume of both structured and unstructured data
The biggest application till today in Animal Health & Veterinary science has been: Spatial analyses Bioinformatics (Genomics & Proteomics)
We have available multiples possible sources of data Sensors Identification tags & chips Mobile devices GPS Databases Management programs Camaras Internet of things Etc…
Any kind of data source could be welcome: ▪ Public data repositories (World Animal Health Information System, from OIE or Global animal Disease Information System from FAO) ▪ Clinical data digitalized ▪ Animal movement data ▪ Production data from Animal Industries ▪ Environmental and climatic factors ▪ GPS tracking devices from people and vehicles…. Generating and storing data is easy!
How to make de data interoperable? Any kind of data source could be welcome: Standardization is mandatory Clinical data are becoming to be stadarizable for humans: LOINC, HL7, SNOMED In veterinary medicine, some initiatives has been created – CLINICAL WILDLIFE INITIATIVE & some SWINE diagnostic data are being created Open possibility: using TEXT-MINING techniques Generating and storing data is easy!
1st STEP: Establishing NORMAL metrics (baselines) 2nd STEP: Emerging data could be compared IN TIME to analyze possible deviations
APLICATIONS: • Epidemiology • Early diagnosis • Pharmacology developments • Managements systems • Etc…
Has this future come? ACADEMIC TO INDUSTRY DIAGNOSTICS TRAINING
Pets AH industry • Market estimation for digital solutions in PET CARE for 2022 = 2,36 billion • Mostly all companies on the pet care business have some device + app for pet health: • Mainly they are shared initiatives by pharma or food companies (Boehringer, Zoetis, Mars, …) + technological companies (AGL, Fujitsu) • Activity trackers, applied to health and welfare. Some of them allows vets to evaluate clinical evolution of animals. INDUSTRY
Production AH industry • More sophisticated systems: combining production data with tracking, feed intake, milk quality, reproduction data, weather conditions…. • They are several system applied to dairy, beef, pig industry and poultry and even aquaculture • Both type of companies: specialized in technology and pharma industries. • Each system is closed. Do not share data with each other. But currently they are available some open databases as FarmVet INDUSTRY
Most of the Vet schools, are not preparing student into this technologies…. …But there are some initiatives to promote it: Veterinary Health Innovation Engine Research Center + startup and incubator in digital technologies applied to veterinarian medicine (Zoetis, Surrey University, Exeter Business School) ACADEMIC TRAINING
Some figures in Human Medicine DIAGNOSTICS
In Veterinarian Medicine & One Health approach Recent example of the capabilities An analysis of telephone calls to Dutch animal health services in 2011, identified an increase in the prevalence of syndromes associated with the occurrence of Schmallenberg virus (SBV) in the weeks prior to the confirmed emergence of SBV. DIAGNOSTICS
In Veterinarian Medicine & One Health approach ▪ Diagnostic testing systems are each day more sophisticated: ✓ Genetic testing more precise and fast ✓ Serology testing platforms (multiplexing) ▪ IT Technology is available and working: ✓ More data sources are continuously created ✓ More devices are being used in Animal Production ✓ More knowledge and specialization for AH specialists is being promoted ✓ Companies are completely involved DIAGNOSTICS
In Veterinarian Medicine & One Health approach VERACITY of data: very much related with validation and certification of data PM Number of data /IT resurces Definitive diagnosis = maximum Laboratory testing Clinical data veracity Examination Mortality rates Production records al herd level Production records at individual levels DIAGNOSTICS
In Veterinarian Medicine & One Health approach INTEGRATION Official Animal AND Private Animal Health services COLLABORATION Health DIAGNOSTICS
