COVID-19 Vaccine Update
COVID-19 Vaccine Coverage
Temporary halt to MLHU programs The Middlesex-London Health Unit will be receiving a 70% increase in its allocation of COVID-19 vaccine over the next several weeks This will allow for the acceleration of second dose delivery. Protection against the new Delta variant first identified in India is much better after two doses (in the range of 90% after two doses, as opposed to 30-40% after one dose). In order to meet the challenge of delivering this vaccine as quickly as possible, the Health Unit needs to temporarily increase its staffing capacity at the mass immunization clinics immediately. The Health Unit will be suspending almost all non-COVID-19 programming and services temporarily between June 17th and July 7th. Please consider limiting your email correspondence with MLHU staff during this time, particularly if it can wait until after July 7th.

COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility: Second dose schedule • Updated shortened interval guidance for MLHU region: o Adults aged 80 and over o Adults aged 70 and over o Individuals who received a first dose on or before April 18 o Individuals who received first dose of AstraZeneca (8-12 week interval)– starting June 15 • Eligible individuals who need to re-book their second dose for a shortened-interval appointment: ✓ Call the COVID-19 Vaccine Booking Line: (226)289-3560 (8:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday to Sunday) ✓ Visit covidvaccinelm.ca • Homebound individuals who received a first dose COVID-19 from the mobile clinic team will be contacted directly to arrange a second dose appointment.

Vaccine Receipts • After being vaccinated, individuals can log in to the provincial portal to download or print an electronic COVID-19 vaccine receipt for each dose received no matter where they were vaccinated (e.g., mass vaccination clinic, hospital, pharmacy or primary care setting). o Individuals will need the following to obtain a vaccination receipt; ▪ Their green photo health (OHIP) card for the numbers on the front AND the back of the card, ▪ Please NOTE: Expired cards will be accepted ▪ Their date of birth, and ▪ Their postal code
Interchangeability of mRNA Vaccines • Moderna and Pfizer are interchangeable COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. This means that individuals can receive either vaccine as their second dose, regardless of which vaccine they received as their first dose. • Large shipments of Moderna are anticipated in the next few weeks, allowing more people to receive a second dose at a shorter interval. At the mass vaccination clinics in Middlesex- London, this also means that some people who received Pfizer as a first dose may receive Moderna as a second dose, or vice versa.
Provincial Updates: AZ Second Dose Guidance • Ontario is accelerating the second dose interval of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to eight weeks, with informed consent. Individuals can choose between a second dose of AstraZeneca or an mRNA vaccine, at an eight to 12-week interval, recognizing that the 12-week interval provides higher protection. • The 12 week interval is the optimal time to maximize the immune response based upon the clinical data and the real-world findings. • The only exception is for individuals on active treatment with immunosuppressive therapy who may require their second dose at an earlier interval because of the timing of their treatment. Ideally, these individuals should still receive their second dose at 12 weeks, but it is recognized that flexibility is required given the treatment regimen.
