Bilateral cooperation Zika R&I related activities • Three projects selected from specific H2020 Call on Zika virus (€30.5m): • Kick-off meetings of ZIKAplan (Recife, 19 October), ZIKAction (Jamaica, 30 Oct-01 Nov.) and ZIKAlliance (São Paulo, 4-5 December) • They involve 20 entities from Latin America, including 12 Brazilian entities: UPE, Fiocruz, USP, Inst.Butantan, Hospital César Cals, UFMG… • Workshop "Latin America and the Caribbean GloPID-R Zika Virus Research" (São Paulo, 30 Nov.–2 Dec.2016) • Held at USP and organised by the EC and the 'Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GloPID-R)' network • Bringing Latin American health authorities and donors to discuss the state of play • The workshop has reinforced the fact that research activities need to be an integrated part of any efficient outbreak response and also confirmed that there are still many research questions remaining to be answered for the current Zika epidemic • Social and political impact in Brazil • Articles about Horizon 2020 supporting research activities and the outcome of the referred workshop have been published in newspapers and other media Research & Innovation 11
Bilateral cooperation Coordinated Call on Advanced Biofuels • Coordinated call on 'lignocellulosic biofuels' between the EC and FAPESP, MCTIC and CONFAP • Total EU budget of €5 million, with matching effort from Brazilian side - Projects were approved in December 2016 • The Brazilian BIOVALUE project brings together research groups from five States (Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo) and six companies -such as Embraer, Petrobras and Boeing- with intense R&D activities • The European BECOOL project is expected to start in May 2017 and covers, with 14 partners from seven Member States, the whole innovation chain from Universities to research institutes to industries Research & Innovation 12
International Cooperation • Crucial to address many Horizon 2020 objectives • Principle of general openness: the programme will be the most open funding programme in the world • Open to the association of acceding countries, candidate countries and potential candidates and selected international partner countries (16 countries associated to the Horizon 2020 Programme and 2 countries to the Euratom Programme) • Targeted actions to be implemented taking a strategic approach to international cooperation

Multilateral cooperation South Atlantic Flagship Initiative • "South Atlantic Flagship Initiative" on marine and maritime research among the EU, Brazil (Declaration of Intent – Nov.2015) and South Africa (Declaration of Intent – Oct.2016) as leading partners • "South-South Atlantic Ocean Research Workshop" (Pretoria, 26-27 January 2017) aimed at completing the scientific agenda "Science Plan on South-South Atlantic Ocean Research Cooperation" among South American and African countries • A Statement on the Atlantic Research Cooperation between Brazil, South Africa and the EU will be signed at the Ministerial meeting planned to be held in Lisbon on 13-14 July 2017 • Several links with the Transatlantic Ocean Research Alliance launched in May 2013 (Galway statement) Research & Innovation 23
Bilateral cooperation Cooperation frameworks with FAPs (FAPs: Research Supporting Foundations) • CONFAP and DELBRA signed a Letter of Intent (2014) establishing matching funds mechanisms under which FAPs are encouraged to support participation in H2020 (CONFAP playing a coordinating role) • Up to now eight FAPs (Brazilian States) are committed: FAPESP (SP), FAPESC (SC), FAPEG (GO), FAPEMIG (MG), FAPDF (DF), Fundação Araucaria (PR), FAPES (ES) and FUNDECT (MT) • Those FAPs have published the “Guidelines for the preparation of research proposals in collaboration with proposals submitted to Horizon 2020” for those entities engaged in selected proposals of Calls • FAPESP –as main FAP and having signed a LoI (2015)- has received some submitted proposal to specific H2020 Calls Research & Innovation 24
Bilateral cooperation Implementing Arrangement EC-CONFAP (CONFAP: National Council of Research Supporting Foundations) • Joining ERC-Grantees' research teams under the Implementing Arrangement EC-CONFAP on European Research Council (ERC) signed in Brussels on 13th October 2016 • IA allows postdoctoral researchers from FAPs (States' Research Support Foundations), CAPES and CNPq to temporarily join research teams run by ERC-grantees to conduct frontier research activities • This IA is also a step forward on the implementation of the EU-CELAC Common Research Area, focusing on the pillar researchers' mobility Research & Innovation 25
Bilateral cooperation Implementing Arrangement EC-CONFAP (CONFAP: National Council of Research Supporting Foundations) • From the last Call for expressions of interest of ERC-grantees (from 17th October to 17th November 2016), a total of 303 Principal Investigators (PI) expressed interest to integrate visits from Brazilian scientists • In order to establish the contacts with PIs, CONFAP is going to launch Call for expressions of interest of Brazilian post-docs • After direct arrangements between PI and post-docs, FAPs will decide which visits they can finance – However, relevant expenses that are eligible within the terms of the ERC grant can be requested • Relevant expenses that are eligible within the terms of the ERC grant can be requested Research & Innovation 26
