TPP Homework Club: March 15-18 EDIT THE EDITOR This spelling activity is based on an article from the feature in this month's issue of The Primary Planet. Read through the article and see if you can spot the 10 spelling mistakes. Submarine Crash (Page 6) A Japaneese submarine, the Soryu, was attempthing to surface off Japan’s Pacific Coast when it collided with a tanker on February 8. It had spoted the tanker through its periscope while rising but was unable to avoide the collision. Three of the Soryu's crew suffered minor injurys in the crash. Its antenna mast and communikation equipment were also damaged, so a mobile phone was used to call for help. The 84-metre submarine was able to continue sailing, but the damage ment it couldn't dive or carry out communications. The tanker, the Ocean Artemis, was not damaged and crew didn't even feel the impact. It's astonishing that the submarine didn't detect the tanker's presents by using sonar technology before it surfaced. An investagation is under way. Curiously, it was 20 years ago, on February 9, 2001, that a US nuclear-powered submarine surfaced near Honolulu, Hawaii, hitting and sinking a Japanese fishing vessel. Nine people were killed, including four high-school students. Rescuers saved 26 people, and the US Navy had to pay $16.5 million in compinsation to the victims’ families.
