ORDER OF WORSHIP | January 16, 2022 WELCOME TO HILTON HEAD PRESBYTERIAN Good morning and welcome to Hilton Head Presbyterian Church! We are honored to have you worshipping with us this morning, whether in person or online, as we celebrate our God and King. We hope that you experience the love and glory of Christ in our worship gatherings. Today, we are in our sermon series The Book of Acts: The Church on Mission. The Book of Acts vividly displays how God began the movement known as His Church. God sends His followers out into the world with an unstoppable mission- to take the good news of Christ to all nations. I’m new. How can I get connected to HHPC? We would love to connect with you and share more about the life and ministry of HHPC! Visit us online at hiltonheadpca.com/sermons to fill out a digital form of our Connection Card and we will be in touch this week. PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP “What we do see in all conversions in all places and times is, while there might not be something spectacular like that (something like a vision or something like that), always the converted person realizes their search for God was a result and the product of God’s first searching for them. Always. You might not see it right away. You might not see it till later, but eventually every person who has experienced conversion looks back and says, ‘I thought I was searching, but when I look back I realize I was searching because he was first searching for me.’“ — Tim Keller “What a difference it makes when we look at others with attitudes that are inclusive, open-armed, optimistic, and lovingly and courteously aggressive. Peter’s story reminds us that God wants to instill in each of us his attitude toward the world. The gospel never changes. But we can become unchangeable, inflexible, and thus unusable. What are our attitudes toward others? Exclusive - pessimistic - passive? Or concerned-hopeful-actively loving? We need to regularly consider Peter’s vision and its meaning and implications for us today.” — R. Kent Hughes
Psalm 68:4-6a, NIV. CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him — his name is the LORD. All: A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing. Music: John Dykes, Holy, Holy, Holy 1861. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Lyrics: Reginald Early in the morning, our songs shall rise to Thee; Heber, 1826. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who was and is and evermore shall be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy — there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity! Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity! Music & Lyrics: Agnus Dei Michael W. Smith, 1990. Alleluia! Alleluia, for the Lord God Almighty reigns! (2x) Alleluia! Chorus: Holy! Holy, are you Lord God Almighty! Worthy is the Lamb! Worthy is the Lamb! Amen
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH & THE PASSING OF PEACE Colossians 1:15-20, All: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. ESV. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. Leader: The peace of the Lord be with you! All: And also with you! HOLY COMMUNION Hebrews 3:12-14, ESV. CALL TO CONFESSION & SILENCE Leader: Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. All: For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. Silence Titus 3:4-7, NLT. ASSURANCE OF GRACE All: When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Leader: The peace of the Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord. All: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Music & Lyrics: Thad Cockrell & Have Mercy Sandra McCracken, 2015. Have mercy on me! Have mercy on me! O Lord, have mercy! O Lord, have mercy! O, help my unbelief! O, help my unbelief! O Lord, have mercy! O Lord, have mercy! Music & Lyrics: Joel Sczebel, 2013. Grace and Peace Grace and peace, oh how can this be? For lawbreakers and thieves, for the worthless, the least; You have said that our judgment is death For all eternity without hope, without rest. Chorus 1: Oh, what an amazing mystery! What an amazing mystery! That Your grace would come to me! Grace and peace, oh how can this be? The matchless King of all paid the blood price for me; Slaughtered Lamb, what atonement You bring! The vilest sinner’s heart can be cleansed, can be free! (Chorus 1) Grace and peace, oh how can this be? Let songs of gratefulness ever rise, never cease! Loved by God and called as a saint; My heart is satisfied in the riches of Christ! (Chorus 1 / Chorus 2) Chorus 2: Oh, what an amazing love I see! What an amazing love I see!
