Heritage Week 2021 Celebrates Where do you find heritage? R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum are celebrating the 25th Annual Heritage Week from February 15-21, 2021, with a different look this year? The Village & Museum are taking our Heritage Week activities online, and we are partnered with The Mall at Piccadilly for a Covid-19 safe week of celebration. Get ready to discover our rich local heritage in a whole new way. This year's heritage week theme is, "Where do you find heritage?" Do you find it in the buildings that make Salmon Arm unique, or do you hear it in the extraordinary stories your family tells? Perhaps you experience it at the Art Gallery or R.J. Haney Heritage Village or in the taste of the many cuisines around town. Or maybe you find it on your favourite hikes and when you stop to admire the scenery of the Shuswap. Or you think of the generations of people who came before you or the faces of the newcomers to our community. Look around you, and you will find heritage everywhere. Due to Covid-19, we encourage our community to gather virtually to celebrate Heritage Week and discovering the history and stories that have shaped our community and rooting us to our past. We invite you to participate in our online activities and contests, stay within your household bubble, and have some safe fun. The week-long event kicks off with the Shuswap's largest online auction. Heritage Week 2021 Celebrates Where do you find heritage? R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum is a registered not-for-profit charitable organization that proudly preserves Salmon Arm and the surrounding community's history. The facility is managed by the Salmon Arm Museum and Heritage Association. The donations and proceeds from Heritage Week support the amazing projects and educational programs at the Heritage Village & Museum. Located on the east side of Salmon Arm at 751 Highway 97 B, it is the Shuswap's largest heritage destination. It welcomes visitors from far and wide who discover how the early settlers and pioneers of the Shuswap lived. Set on 40 acres of the prettiest farmland in the Shuswap, the site comprises 24 buildings that are either replicas or originals and over 30 exhibits, including the original 1910 Haney House. The Montebello Museum is the recipient of the 2018 Thompson-Okanagan-Kootenay Commercial Building Awards "Award of Merit" and the Associations Canada 150 Lasting Legacy Project. Nine storefronts complete the Village stories, such as Miss Puff's Millinery, the Salmon Arm Telephone Exchange, the McGuire General Store and the E.A. Palmer Butcher Shop. It is the home for the Ernie Doe Archives Room, the Museum's Collection and Gallery. The Children's Museum and Discovery Centre and Outdoor Play Area provide hours of playful discovery for families. Located in the Broadview School House's main level in the heart of the Village, the Children's Museum and Discovery Centre is themed around the natural elements at the Heritage Village, the water of the Shuswap and our early settlers. The outdoor play area is located directly behind the Discovery Centre. If you are looking for a unique lunch experience, the Village's full- service restaurant, the Sprig of Heather, offers indoor and outdoor seating for up to 140 guests. It is also the new home for dinner service for Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre. The commercial kitchen handles all the culinary needs for the daily menu, events, weddings and corporate functions at the Heritage Village.
A must-see is our very popular Villains and Vittles Dinner Theatre Production. You can enjoy a home-cooked meal and live theatre every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evening in July and August. It is a highlight of Salmon Arm's summer cultural entertainment! The property boasts a 2.3-kilometre walking trail in a woodland setting covering two climate zones, which parallel Canoe Creek. With a Trail Guide in-hand, visitors discover the property's natural history and identify the plants used by early settlers and pioneers. Throughout the season, visitors can also participate in the many special events hosted at the Village with our community partners, including High Tea, Pioneer Day, the Annual Car Show, Harvest Celebration, Spooktacular and more. Some of the best memories are made at R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum, and a visit from May through September is well worth the trip!
