The SMPS Heartland Program Committee is seeking engaging programs for the 2021 Heartland Regional Conference that
will be in held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 12-14, 2021. Programs should fit into the themes of:
• The conference theme “Dial It Up!”, focusing on how attendees can take their firms and careers to the next level.
• Exploring industry innovations, highlighting upcoming A/E/C trends and showcasing where the industry is moving
in the future.
• Offering strategies for individuals and firms to adapt to changes and challenges while thriving when they occur.
Topics should address one or more of the SMPS Six Domains of Practice: Market Research, Marketing Planning, Client and
Business Development, Proposals, Promotional Activity, and Management. In addition, the conference would like to offer
programs on career/personal growth.
Submissions will be carefully reviewed to be sure attendees are offered the best possible content. Consequently, HRC will
not accept programs that will be given at Build Business 2020 so please note in your submittal if you have also submitted
to Build Business. Additionally, HRC is asking that speakers limit their submissions to a maximum of two.
Please note that SMPS Heartland reserves the right to modify the conference program schedule up to 30 days in advance
of the event. This may include, but is not limited to, adjustments to the format, timeslot or date caused by external factors,
such as COVID-19 or related health or safety concerns outside of the control of SMPS Heartland.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The SMPS Heartland Regional Conference is a semi-annual event focused on providing outstanding professional development
opportunities, both educational and through networking. The Heartland Region is comprised of members in Illinois, Indiana,
Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania (Western), and Wisconsin. The conference has a reputation of providing
valuable content that attendees can share within their firms to help realize the vision of SMPS: Business Transformed
through Marketing Leadership.
Who will attend?
• Marketing and business development professionals, along with firm principals and owners.
• The attendees encompass all ranges of experience from entry- to senior-level, as well as from all size firms.
• The Heartland SMPS Region—comprised of approximately 900 professionals representing more than 350 companies
and organizations. Attendance is traditionally around 200 from seven states and Ontario.

PROGRAM FOCUS
Heartland 2021 is anticipating having 15 75-minute programs, and are encouraging not only the typical presentation,
panel or workshop, but are looking for unique ways to present pertinent information. If you have an out-of-the-ordinary
format, we are all ears!
LECTURE/BEST PRACTICES
Lectures typically consist of a speaker providing the attendees with information and best practices. This format should
include a 10-15 minute Q&A session to actively engage learners.
PANEL DISCUSSION
Panel discussions give the attendees the opportunity to hear different viewpoints on a specific topic and allows for time
at the end for a Q&A session. Panels are limited in size to no more than one moderator and three panelists. The names
of all presenters must be included with this submission.
WORKSHOP
Workshops are hands-on learning experiences that use group discussion, exercises, demonstrations and studies, and
should also include time at the end for Q&A.
Speakers selected to present at the 2021 Heartland Regional Conference will enjoy:
• Full conference registration ($545) that includes all conference meals and sessions, as well as admission to the
Wednesday social. Speakers are responsible for their own travel, lodging, and meals outside of conference events.
• Reputation as an industry expert.
• Exposure to a prospective audience of 200+ A/E/C leaders in attendance.
• Opportunity to expand your network and build new business.
• Opportunity to find additional speaking engagements with SMPS chapters and regional conferences.
• Valuable presentation feedback to improve your speaking skills and content.

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
Your submission is due by Friday, December 4, 2020 at 5:00pm. Due to the time required to adequately review the
submissions and make the best program selections, proposers must limit their proposals to no more than two. Proposals
must be in pdf format and sent to both Katie Muth and Kaitlyn Hanko. Please enter “2021 SMPS Heartland Regional
Conference Submission” in the subject line. Any questions should be directed to Katie and Kaitlyn.

Your submission should include the following information listed in the order it is provided:
1. Session title.
2. Session format.
3. Theme the program best fits.
4. Experience level for which the session is targeted.
5. Session description (250-word limit) that tells us about the content of your session and what attendees will learn
– be specific about the value of the program.
6. A list of three to five learning outcomes or actionable takeaways that attendees will gain from the program.
7. A detailed outline of your session that highlights key messages. Limit to one 8.5” x 11” page, with a font size not
smaller than 11 point.
8. Handouts: what tools will attendees receive that enhance the learning experience?
9. Is this program being submitted for Build Business 2020?
10. Speaker bio (250-word limit), along with a list of programs presented in the past five years and three references
(not included in the 250-word count). Previous experience is not required.
11. A color headshot (5”x 7”, 300 dpi, jpg) for promotional purposes.
12. Why should your session be part of Heartland 2021 – be creative and make us nod our head in agreement (250-
word limit).
13. Speaker information form (can be found on following page).
By submitting your proposal, you are granting the SMPS Heartland Program Committee permission to use your speaker
bio, photo, and session description in promotions (social media and print) prior to, during and after the 2021 conference.
