Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 21, 2021
This week we worship Christ King of the Universe. When we think of Christ as King it
means several things. Firstly he is of the line of David and God promised David the King
that there would be someone from his line on the throne for all eternity. Since Mary and Jo-
seph were of the House of David, Jesus has a claim to the earthly throne of David. Just so, in
the Gospels he is referred to as the Son of David: “Son of David have mercy on me…
Hosanna to the Son of David, etc.”
Yet Jesus himself (Luke 20:41-44) asks “Why is it said that the Messiah is the Son of David?” He quotes
Psalm 110:1, “The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’” Jesus’ conclusion is “If David calls him ‘my Lord.’
How, then, can he be his son?”
While not denying the title “Son of David,” He demonstrates that His is more than an earthly kingdom.
While he is the Son of David, yet David calls him “my Lord”. The dialogue between the Roman Prefect
Pontius Pilate and Jesus is also striking in Jesus’ claim of his heavenly kingdom (John 18:36).
There is even more. As we say in the Creed, “through Him all things were made…and His Kingdom will
have no end.” Clearly, as the Apostle writes in his Christologic hymn in Philippians (2:9-11): “that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every
tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.” Amen!

Esta semana adoramos a Cristo Rey del Universo. Cuando pensamos en Cristo Rey, significa varias co-
sas. En primer lugar, es de la línea de David y Dios le prometió a David el Rey que habría alguien de su
línea en el trono por toda la eternidad. María y José eran de la Casa de David, por eso Jesús tiene
derecho al trono terrenal de David. En los Evangelios se le conoce como el Hijo de David: "Hijo de Da-
vid ten piedad de mí ... Hosanna al Hijo de David, etc."
Sin embargo, el mismo Jesús (Lucas 20: 41-44) pregunta: “Cómo es que dicen que el Cristo es hijo de
David?” Él mismo cita el salmo 110:1: “Dijo el Señor a mi Señor: ‘Siéntate a mi derecha, hasta que
ponga a tus enemigos por estrado de tus pies’”. La conclusión de Jesús es “David lo llama (al Cristo)
‘Señor.’ ¿Cómo puede entonces ser su hijo?”
Aunque no niega el título de "Hijo de David,” demuestra que el suyo es más que un reino terrenal. Si
bien, es el Hijo de David, pero David lo llama "mi Señor". El diálogo entre el prefecto romano Poncio
Pilato y Jesús también es sorprendente en la afirmación de Jesús de su reino celestial (Juan 18:36).
Hay aún más. Como decimos en el Credo, "por quién todo fue hecho ... y su reino no tendrá fin". Clara-
mente, como el apóstol escribe en su himno cristológico en Filipenses (2:9-11): “para que ante el nom-
bre de Jesús se doble toda rodilla en el cielo y en la tierra y debajo de la tierra, y toda lengua confiese
que Jesucristo es el Señor, para gloria de Dios Padre.” ¡Amén!

November 21, 2021
“So Pilate said to him, ‘Then you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say I am a king. For this was I born and for this
I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’”
We pray, ‘Thy kingdom come.’ What does this really mean to me today? We find His kingdom in the church, growing, pro-
gressing, in holiness. We observe His kingdom at work with care for the needs of all. We discover His kingdom even in the
faults, the weakness and errors of its members. It is the person of Jesus Christ we follow, He who said He is, ‘the way, the
truth and the life.’
As we bring the church year to a close, I wish to affirm what it means to follow Jesus, acknowledge that He alone can make
a difference in my life, and reassert my desire to live my Christian life with new dedication and fervor.
