Growth over Gaps Oviedo High School Principal’s Weekly Update February 14, 2022 Safety and Security With recent events occurring, students and parents have asked what safety protocols does OHS have in place to protect our students? With situations it is natural to feel concerned, and even afraid, when learning of a safety threat to our campus, but I would like to assure you that we continue to layer safety measures and protocols on our campus to protect our students, faculty, and staff. Prior to me becoming the principal, safety fencing was added to the perimeter of the campus. Since becoming principal, during the last three years the following safety measures have been taken: • Zero Eyes • $60,000 worth of camera installation to blanket the campus – just a reminder that in the new construction there were no cameras installed, so we tackled camera installation in phases due to the cost. • New server to house the cameras provided by community church donations • Doorbell system with locked front entrance during the school day • Bus loop gate • Locking down the back parking lot during the school day • Partial scheduled students are in the front lot • Digital IDs • Code Red Drill during lunch time and transition time • 2 highly qualified and trained SROs at OHS full time who are highly effective Will be added to prom • Additional police presence • Admin, Faculty, and Staff chaperones • Wanding • No bag entry
Even with all the features and protocols added, human reporting is often the best tool and key to intercepting issues before they happen. Please encourage your students to report any concerns using the P3 app or the www.speakouthotline.org or just tell an adult they trust. I have reviewed the importance of getting an adult involved with the students over the PA system. Please continue to remind them of the importance of See Something, Say Something, Do Something. Telling an adult is critical. Finally, any altercation on campus is dealt with fairly and with appropriate consequences. Fighting will not be tolerated. A parent from SAC offered a great suggestion to me and the School Board regarding safety education. If you have any additional ideas, please let me know. Are you in 9th-11th Grade and Need to Retake a Class??? We would like to extend an invitation to your student to attend our after-school PLATO program. PLATO is an online, web-based credit recovery system where students can work at their own pace. One .5 credit course could take, at minimum, two weeks to complete dependent upon the entry point in the course (students can place further along in the course rather than in the beginning after completing a pre-test). This is an opportunity for underclassmen to recover credit during the school year a couple days a week. The next opportunity will be summer school in June 2022. Save Your Spot Here: https://forms.gle/oCfbfNE7SDZAA8nN7 The after-school PLATO program will operate Tuesdays (1-208) and Thursdays (13-211) from 2:30pm to 4:30pm starting August 31st. *There is no transportation, so students will need to coordinate their own way home.
