Volume 6, Issue 8 April 2021 Principal’s Ponderings Sue and I have been blessed to minister around the country in various schools, and because of that, we have bought our share of houses. All but one have been older homes that require constant upgrading/changing. Although we’ve been in our current house for five years now, there is always something to modify. This weekend, I fin- ished replacing multiple mismatched doors on the second floor of our 90 year old home. If you’ve ever bought such a house, you might even find yourself looking for help like HGTV to learn methods of improvement for the house. I find in the LuHi min- istry that we share, we also are about looking to our Lord for guidance as we work to achieve the alterations necessary for us to continually offer the best ministry possibili- ties to those in our community. This year, the most amazing offering we’ve shared was being able to be in-person for almost the entire school year. Let that sink in a bit as so many of our educational col- leagues are happy to be experiencing some type of hybrid. However, we find that cer- tain changes are on the horizon beyond our decision to learn in-person this year. Some of those upcoming modifications: After deep consultation with Trinity Lutheran church leadership, Mr. Zach Klug has accepted our call to teach and lead administratively starting next school year; Dr. Ruth McDonnell has accepted a call to lead the LCMS church’s teacher colloquy program based in Bend, Oregon; we now once again are looking for a music teach- er who will lead at the high school and teach band at our Lutheran grade schools; We continue to look for a Spanish teacher for our curriculum for the 2021-22 school year; and With the sad loss of “grounds superintendent” Gary Brashear, we will be looking for someone to direct landscaping operations for our 26 amazing acres of land. Recently, as we’ve been working on further planning for the 2021-22 school year, we know that your role in supporting and sharing about our ministry here at LuHi is critical. Please make sure to share with families you know, that are looking at their educational choices for next year, how we have been in-person and made that work well this year. Of course, for those who are contemplating sending a student to a public school, those families will need to consider if their student will end up being placed in classes where their peers may be struggling to catch up. The administration and faculty at LuHi are very cognizant of those challenges. We want prospective families to know that stu- dents coming to Lutheran High School will not be slowed because of COVID school lockdowns. As always, thank you for your partnership this year as we have been in-person, in- school, and together in-Christ!
Crusader of the Month Last week was a special week, Holy Week; a week when we re- member how Jesus set His eyes and His life on the course that was set before Him, the course that led Him to the cross for our salvation. Because He has won that race for us, "Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith." - Hebrews 12:1-2 Our Crusader of the Month for March lives out that faith as she serves in quiet humility as one of our Christian Leaders, as a mem- ber of National Honor Society and Spiritual Life Committee, as a teacher aide, and as a captain of her sports' teams. She not only figuratively runs with endurance the race set before her, but can be literally found running Cross Country courses and endurance races in Track, always striving for excellence, not just in the physical rac- es, but in all that she does inside and outside the classroom. When she isn't actually running, physically, you might find her serving others in her job at a nursing home, or filling out college scholar- ship applications as she prepares for a career in the health field, or helping to grade papers, or reading announcements, or being a good friend. This Crusader of the Month was also recently selected to the IHSA All-State Honorable Mention Academic Team, a very distinctive honor for her academic and athletic achieve- ments. Let's congratulate Senior Elizabeth Eck as she continues to "run with endurance the race set before her, looking to Jesus as the founder and perfecter of her faith!" Also nominated: Ben Werner and Abigail Bouravnev

Ledger April 2021 The students in our Theater Department are working hard to prepare its Spring Play, The Island of Dr. Libris. Please continue to encourage our young actors, actresses, and crew in their endeavors. The Island of Dr. Libris celebrates the power of imagination with an action-packed ad- venture that shows that sometimes the real story starts after you close the book! What if your favorite characters came to life? Billy’s spending the summer in a lakeside cabin that belongs to the mysterious Dr. Libris. But something strange is going on. Besides the security cameras everywhere, there’s Dr. Libris’ private bookcase. Whenever Billy opens the classic books inside, he can hear sounds coming from the island in the middle of the lake. The clash of swords. The twang of arrows. The dialogue of characters. Sometimes he can even feel the ground shaking. It’s almost as if the stories he’s reading are com- ing to life! But that’s impossible … isn’t it? Before long, Dr. Libris’ island is populated by some of the most famous characters in all of literature: Hercules, Robin Hood, Maid Marian, The Three Musketeers, Tom Sawyer and Pollyanna. When these characters mingle, their plot lines get mixed up (and complicated by the arrival of a few comic book heroes and villains). The Island of Dr. Libris harnesses the imaginative powers of live theatre, calling on the audience to use their imaginations along with Billy’s. As of this writing, due to COVID, the production’s presentation format is still to be determined. More information will be released as it becomes available.
