THE ROYAL OAK FOUNDATION Dear Members and Friends, I invite you to join us next May on a glorious springtime exploration of some of Northern Ireland’s most spectacular houses and gardens, on an itinerary developed with the National Trust and distinguished horticulturalist and garden designer, Patrick Bowe, who will join us on this program. Author of The Gardens of Ireland and a native son of Éire, Paddy is a witty and captivating lecturer who has delighted countless groups over the years. We begin in Dublin, where accommodations are at the elegant Merrion Hotel. Visit the Georgian townhouse of Helen Dillon, world-renowned author, television personality, and grande dame of Irish gardens, who has invited us for morning coffee. The next morning we head north, calling at Castle Leslie, where Paul McCartney held his wedding in 2002, before crossing into Northern Ireland’s beautiful west country, Patrick Bowe County Fermanagh and checking in to the luxurious Lough Erne Resort. In Fermanagh and County Londonderry we spend three days visiting magnificent castles and gardens, including neoclassical Castle Coole and Crom Castle, seats of the Earls of Belmore and Earls of Erne, respctively. At Crom we will dine in the house as well as touring the gardens. We also dine at Baronscourt, seat of the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn, with its mixture of classical grandeur and interiors by the legendary David Hicks. We then head east, stopping at The Argory, a marvelous late Georgian gentry house, and the fascinating gardens of Rowallane, before arriving in vibrant Belfast. Our base is The Merchant Hotel, in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter. From here we make excursions to the southwest, including Hillsborough Castle, the Royal family’s residence in Northern Ireland, the house and gardens of Ballywalter Park and Grey Abbey, one of the finest Georgian house in Ireland, where are invited for lunch with owners Mr. and Mrs. William Montgomery. This program concludes with a very special day at Mount Stewart, historic seat of the Marquesses of Londonderry now in the care of the National Trust. Here we will explore the stunning and horticulturally important gardens created by Edith Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Lady Londonderry, in the mid-20th century and recently nominated as a World Heritage site. We will benefit from Paddy’s expertise as well as that of the top National Trust experts on all our visits. I hope you will join us on this privileged exploration of Northern Ireland. Sincerely, Sean E. Sawyer, Ph.D. Executive Director The Royal Oak Foundation
