Genesis Genesis Tokomairiro High 238 Union Street School Newsletter & MILTON Community Noticeboard T: 03 417 4483 Wednesday 4th August 2021 E: genesis@tokohigh.school.nz Rotary Award Well Deserved The Rotary Club of Milton were thrilled to award Helen Vollweiler a Paul Harris Fellow for her services to the community over many years. Helen’s community involvement includes supporting Milton Plunket for 8 years, 3 years as secretary/treasurer for Milburn Home and School and secretary/ treasurer for the Tokomairiro High School PTA for 5 years. A keen golfer, she has had several roles in the Toko Golf Club including Ladies Club Captain. Helen has also been involved as a Milton Rotary tramping club leader. The community role we really want to emphasis is Helen’s involvement with the Milton Community Health Trust. It is our local community health organisation which offers services such as District Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Meals on Wheels and Volunteer driving. MCHT have also held a contract with the Methodist Mission for a Social work service since July 2014, have set up the Tokomairiro Community Hub and Project Bruce - the Community Development Project which now an independent Trust. Helen first joined the Milton Community Health Trust Board in 2007 and became the Chairperson in 2011. Helen has been the Chair for almost 10 years, which is the longest consecutive period since MCHT’s inception 25 years Above: 2020-21 Milton Rotary Club ago in 1996. As Board Chair, Helen has represented MCHT - South Otago President, Stephen Woodhead, presents Health Locality Network group; Community Development Project Bruce Helen Vollweiler with her Paul Harris Fellow. Steering Committee; MCHT Management committee; Information, negotiation and audit meetings with the Southern District Health Board Helen has also been engaged with the other companies that MCHT have operated which include Eden Street Ltd (who used to own the Medical Centre), the Tokomairiro Community Health Trust (which is a subsidiary of Milton Community Health who hold funds for community health work outside of the SDHB contract), and the Tokomairiro Community Hub. Helen has taken on all of these roles and duties in a quiet, empathetic and respectful way that garners trust and goodwill. She gives freely of her time and we are delighted that she is being honoured with the Paul Harris Fellowship. They can’t think of a more deserving person! Daffodil Day 2021 Yes! Yes! Yes! It’s that time of year again - the Cancer Society’s Annual Appeal Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with Cancer. The Cancer Society is the largest Private Funder of Cancer Research in NZ. They provide Support and Care Services including counselling, transport, accommodation and a helpline to individuals and their families during treatment. Milton has a great record of helping supply funds for the cause so August 27th is our chance to give to help the Cancer Society Along with selling daffodils, pens and teddy bears we will once again have a produce stall outside SuperValue. Can you bake and donate cakes biscuits preserves or fresh produce? Have you got time to help on Friday August 27th? Term 2 at Tokoiti School Bible Reading for Today ‘Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me’ We have had another busy term up at Tokoiti! We had St Psalm 30:2 John come to teach our Trekkers about how to keep themselves safe, prevent falls, recognise poisons and how to treat minor injuries. Our Trekkers also learnt about how to Outward Bound Experience get help in an emergency and how they can help while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
