To make this day a success, we count on our amazing parent volunteers. If you are able to help, please use this link to sign up. For any questions, please contact Mrs. Pautzke at 480-839-3402 or mpautzke@tempeprep.org. Asynchronous Wednesdays – Important to Report Each Child’s Attendance Every Wednesday we conduct our classes asynchronously, where students will work from home on assignments provided by their teachers. The following is important information about these Wednesdays. Attendance: Each student in grades 6-12 needs to complete their attendance by checking in on Infinite Campus to mark themself present. This is very important. Here are instructions of how to do that. 1. Log into Infinite Campus Student Portal sometime between 8 am and 3 pm on Wednesdays. 2. On the Home page/Today screen, look for the box that says “Check-Ins” and click that box (see graphic below). 3. At the bottom of the popup box, click the “Yes, I’m Here” button (see graphic).
Assigned Work: Students will be provided with engaging, meaningful work that will help move the curriculum along. This day is not intended to be a day in which students are self-taught, but new material may be introduced so long as it will be reviewed and covered more extensively during in-class days. All work should be submitted according to your instructor’s directions. We hope that this new schedule will provide online students with a welcome break from being on the computer all day as well as provide teachers and students the time to catch up on missing work and grading. If you have any questions about this new schedule, please contact Mrs. Pautzke at mpautzke@tempeprep.org. Picture Day at TPA - Thursday, Jan. 21 Lifetouch studios will be on campus to photograph students on Thursday, January 21. Students will be sent to take photos in the Student Union with their class throughout the day. All students should be in school uniform, following the normal dress code guidelines from the Family Handbook, including hair length and color requirements. Order forms are available in the front office and should be going home this week; please check with your student. Online orders can be placed at mylifetouch.com using Picture Day ID: EVTQP2QSD. For any questions please contact Mrs. Pautzke at mpautzke@tempeprep.org. Online students are welcome to come for a photo during lunch. Should you not wish for your student to come to campus to be photographed on the 21st or the make-up day (tentatively scheduled for February 19), we have the option to upload photographs so your student may be included in the yearbook. To ensure cohesiveness in the photographs, the following parameters must be adhered to: 1. Everyone must be in their TPA uniform. 2. The hair must follow the TPA dress code. 3. Use a solid color background. 4. Take the photo in portrait mode (vertical), not landscape. The photo should be about chest up. If you are using an iPhone, iPhone 6 and above produce great quality. 5. If possible, having some lighting in front or above helps brighten the face. 6. If your child wears glasses, they may have to tilt their head slightly to get rid of the glare. 7. Please use past yearbooks for references if needed. Don't hesitate to email gramcqu2021@tempeprep.org or maykost2021@tempeprep.org with questions. Instructions for submitting the photographs will be sent through Infinite Campus. Learning Option Updates: In-Person vs. Virtual As the situation continues to change, our response continues to adapt. For this new quarter, we are allowing more flexibility regarding student’s learning options. • Should you wish for your In-Person student to remain online for an extended period of time, please notify the office. We will change the student’s status to Virtual until notified by the parent to convert to In- Person. Students who are classified as Virtual will need to attend ONLINE ONLY until they have been reclassified. • Students may NOT initiate the change, we must hear from the parent. • Once a student returns to In-Person, we request that any Chromebook that was borrowed be returned to the office at that time. • To avoid changes back and forth, which presents a safety issue and extra burden on the teachers, PARENTS must notify the OFFICE in advance (before classes begin daily) if an In-Person student will be attending online for any reason (i.e. illness, out of town, etc.). This may be reported via o the TPA website, o by emailing Mrs. Pautzke at mpautzke@tempeprep.org, o through your Infinite Campus parent portal, or o by calling the attendance line at 480-839-3402 Registration for Spring Semester Foreign Language Dual Enrollment Courses – Due Jan. 22 It is now time to register for the Spring semester foreign language dual enrollment courses. Have questions or issues with enrollment? Call the Rio Salado Early College Office at 480-517-8080. You can also visit the Rio Salado campus at 2323 West 14th Street, Tempe, AZ 85281. Early College Office is open Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. Rio Salado College dual enrollment credits are accepted by all three Arizona universities and many more public and private colleges and universities across the country. Another way to receive foreign language college credit is to take the AP or CLEP exams senior year for $110-140. Please contact Mrs. Moffitt to sign up and pay for AP exams before February 20. SUMMER PROGRAMS It’s Time to Apply! Now is the time to start thinking about and applying for enriching summer programs to help you explore and decide on college and career goals! For a list of summer programs that many of our TPA students have attended, and many with full or half scholarships, click HERE. For the most scholarships and/or financial aid, apply early! Dear Juniors and Seniors and Parents, This is an amazing opportunity for an eight-week paid summer job/internship and leadership experience for current Juniors and Seniors: If you’re committed to making a positive impact in your community, Bank of America offers a competitive Student Leaders® Program that includes both a full-time 8-week paid summer internship at a local nonprofit, such as the Tempe Boys & Girls Club, and a fantastic week-long all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. in July with many outstanding speakers and student leaders from around the country! The Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change. You’ll connect with other community-minded students and experience how nonprofits, business and government can cooperate to improve communities. TPA alums that participated in this program and highly recommend it include Aimee Cheng (TPA '18, UPenn), Chris Moffitt (TPA '16, Stanford), Rachel Matsumoto (TPA '15, Dartmouth), and Caleb Peckham (TPA '13, Princeton). Applications are due Jan. 29 at 9 pm. This is the type of website that can get booged down at the deadline so please complete your application early. Since teacher letters of recommendation are not given to students, simply follow the instructions for schools that have that policy -- and ask your teachers this week! For more information and an application, go to: http://about.bankofamerica.com/en-us/global-impact/student- leaders.html Grade 10: HOBY Leadership Seminar Registration Open – First Come Basis One of the popular summer leadership programs for 10th graders is HOBY, the spirited Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar. Normally this is held as a 4 day residential program on an ASU campus and students must be nominated by faculty to attend. You are welcome to bring the form after hours and put in the Front Office door mail slot. • Spots will be filled on a first-come basis. • For more information about HOBY, here is a short video: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mfpazzpvaaqbume/What%20is%20HOBY%20- %20in%2090%20Seconds%21%20%281%29.mp4?dl=0 • And here is the website: https://www.hoby.org/programs/state-leadership-seminars/

Juniors: FREE USC Bovord Scholars Summer Program – Due Feb. 15 at 5 pm The University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles has opened the student application for USC Bovard Scholars, a fully scholarshipped (FREE!) 3-week summer program to help high-achieving high school juniors with financial need gain admission to apply to and succeed at the nation’s top universities. Most students accepted into the program have a family income of $60,000 or less. Here is more info: • Many outstanding students from educationally and economically under-resourced communities do not even apply to the nation’s best universities — despite the likelihood not only of being admitted but also of receiving generous financial aid that often makes it less expensive than attending less-selective colleges (such as the state public universities with about a 30% graduation rate). Those talented students that are correctly “matched” with selective colleges graduate at much higher rates than students attending less selective colleges. (Hoxby & Avery, 2013). To that end, our USC Bovard Scholars receive admission and financial aid guidance, comprehensive test preparation, personalized career exploration and leadership development opportunities. • The program includes an intensive, 3-week residential experience during the summer on the USC campus and personal coaching throughout the college application and decision-making process, all at no cost to the student. The scholars engage with guest speakers, industry experts, career specialists and recent college graduates to define their personal pathway to college and beyond. • For more information about the program and the application, go to https://bovardscholars.usc.edu/our- program/what-to-expect/ • Be sure to start the application right away so that you have plenty of time to ask for teacher and counselor recommendations, etc. Always ask for recommendations in person, then follow up with an email. The more time that you give a teacher to write a letter of recommendation, the better. But you should always give a teacher at least two weeks, but a fullmonth is even better. • For all competitive summer and college applications, schedule a time to meet with our essay coach, Mr. Schuster at bschuster@tempeprep.org to review your essays, and then Mrs. Moffitt to review your entire application. Grades 8-11: Stanford Summer Programs Stanford offers programs across a wide variety of disciplines—including arts, business, humanities, math, science, and more—allowing highly motivated students to investigate advanced topics not typically taught in secondary schools. Participants engage in small classes with brilliant instructors and peers who share their passions. Deadlines for most of our summer programs are in February. • Stanford Summer Humanities Institute brings students in grades 10 and 11 together to explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities. Seminars are led by distinguished Stanford professors during this three-week residential program. • Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes allows students in grades 9–11 to apply to a single-subject intensive course selected from a wide range of disciplines, and benefit from small class size and academically themed residences. • Stanford AI4ALL invites students in 9th grade to apply to this three-week residential summer program. Participants learn about topics in AI, partake in ongoing research at Stanford, and receive mentorship from professors, graduate students, and industry professionals. Young women and students from underrepresented and/or low-income backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. • Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC) students participate in a highly-selective program centered around lectures, guided research, and group problem-solving in advanced math topics. This four- week program is intended for an elite group of talented students in grades 10 and 11.
