A little about Metro Health • Community based hospital system affiliated with the University of Michigan • Level II trauma center • 208 inpatient beds (1 patient per room), 28 room ED + minor care • 10 ORs including Da Vinci Xi robot with teaching console • Affiliate outpatient surgery center • Residency programs: general surgery, Ob/Gyn, ED, FM- NMM & sports medicine, IM, orthopedic surgery, urology • Excellent cookies in the cafeteria
A little about our program • 2 residents per year • 5 year ACGME accredited program with osteopathic recognition • Comlex level I & II and/or USMLE step I & II accepted • Simulation lab including laparoscopic trainer available • Early operative experience starting intern year • Research expectation: yearly project involvement with publication requirement by graduation
A little about what we are looking for • Ours is a small program but a strong program • We value collaboration and communication • We are looking for candidates with a solid work ethic interested in joining a tightknit team of bread and butter general surgery residents • A sense of humor is encouraged but not required
A little about education • Wednesday morning book club with focus on surgical text i.e. Sabiston’s (textbook changes year to year) • Thursday morning didactics: • Tumor board • M&M • Multidisciplinary presentations from attending surgeons as well as ancillary services in the hospital • Resident lectures with focus on DeckerIP curriculum • Mock oral boards • Quarterly wellness events • Monthly trauma peer review • Monthly statewide surgical subspecialty lecture series
A little about our GS service • Call is 24 hour model starting PGY-2 (no night float) • Interns take two 24 hour call shifts per month with senior residents • In house GS service is BUSY and covers: elective general surgery, surgical oncology, vascular, trauma, EGS, colorectal, breast, thoracics, endoscopy • Metro places an emphasis on duty hour compliance and work life balance • Majority of rotations are in house at Metro • Currently, out rotations are all within Grand Rapids at Spectrum Butterworth and Blodgett as well as Mercy Health Saint Mary’s
A little about Grand Rapids • Enticing city that encompasses all four seasons in full glory (fall is a personal favorite) • Considered “Beer City, USA” • Diverse eateries, drinkeries, and tomfooleries to be explored • The area boasts assorted options for outdoor activities from trails around the city, water fun to the west, backpacking adventures up north, and much more • Downside: no mountains. However, skiing, snowboarding, snow mobiling still a viable option during the snowy season • Within 3 hours of Chicago and Detroit • Affordable cost of living
