General News
THANK YOU
We have reached the end of another difficult year
and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
our learners, staff and parents/guardians for the
effort and support that has gone into managing the
challenges and getting through this year very
successfully. Although it has not been easy, the
human spirit has been ever-present and we have
seen an enormous growth, a spirit of resilience
and a willingness to persevere and succeed
amongst our peers and our colleagues. This
fighting spirit is testament to this incredible
institution, which will continue to stand the test of time no matter what the circumstances.

I would also like to offer our sincere condolences to any members of our school community who have
suffered loss over the course of this year. Our thoughts and prayers are with you over this difficult time.

In particular, I would like to acknowledge our Grade 12s who have shown enormous courage and
commitment in completing their matric exams under these conditions. We are extremely proud of each
and every one of you and wish you everything of the best as you move into the next phase of your
lives. We will follow your progress with interest. The matric results will be released on 21 January and
can be collected at the school from 08:00.

I would like to wish our whole school community a restful and well-deserved break. To those families
celebrating Christmas, I wish you a blessed and peaceful Festive Season. Finally, my heartfelt request
is that we all be responsible citizens over this holiday period, and we keep ourselves, our families and
all those around us safe.

FAREWELL
As is customary at the end of a year, we
have to say farewell to a few staff members:

Miss Merzbacher (LO Teacher)
Miss Merzbacher joined us during the year as
a student teacher and then offered to stay on
and assist us when Mrs Hunzinger went on maternity leave. It is not easy to take over someone else’s
classes during the year, but Miss Merzbacher made it look easy and added enormous value to the LO
Department. Over the course of the few months she was with us, we watched her grow and develop as
a teacher and as a person and we wish her everything of the best in, what I am sure, will be a very
successful teaching career.
General News - Parktown High School for Girls
Mr Hood (English Teacher)
Mr Hood joined us in 2018 as an English Teacher and over his four years at the school, he has proved
to be so much more than that. He is passionate about what he does, cares deeply about the learners
and his colleagues and has added enormous value to the English Department. Two years ago, he took
over the AP English with great success, and in 2019 he agreed to assist Mrs Fourie with the choir
(unfortunately Covid happened and we did not have the opportunity to see how far he would have
taken them). Mr Hood is an excellent pianist, a talent which the school benefitted from a few times, and
he was also the musical director of the Major Production a few years ago. After 31 years in teaching,
Mr Hood has decided to take a break from the profession, and we wish him everything of the best for
this next phase of his life.

Mrs Field (Physical Science)
Mrs Field joined Parktown in 2011 in the Physical Science Department and has been a valuable and
loyal member of staff over the past 10 years. Over this time, she has suffered enormous personal
tragedy when she lost her daughter a few years back and this year she lost her son to a drowning
accident. She has shown enormous courage and bravery in carrying on but has decided to take a
break from teaching and to focus on other things. Although we are saying farewell to Mrs Field as a
Science Teacher, Mrs Field will be staying on at the school in another capacity and will be assisting
with remedial teaching and various other administrative tasks.

SIGNS OF POSITIVITY
Recently, Signs of Positivity, an initiative developed by Reg Pakari, managing member of Whack Art
and Design was launched at Parktown. The initiative aims to install signs with positive messaging in
schools in South Africa to plant seeds of positive thought in the minds of children from all walks of life
in an attempt to change communities and South Africa for the better.

We are sincerely grateful that our school was chosen as one of the pilot schools, together with
Parkview Junior and Parkview Senior Schools and we have no doubt that these signs will be the
catalyst for positive conversations in the corridors and in the classrooms.

A huge thanks must go to Mr Pakari, the founder of this initiative, and to ‘the Perfect Cup’; BP
Parkview and Parkhurst Paint and Hardware for their generous sponsorships that made this initiative
possible.

If you have any questions or queries please email Mr Pakari, reg@whackdesign.co.za

received the Pfizer vaccine. Thank you to everyone who came through and supported this initiative,
and we encourage all our learners, parents/guardians and caretakers to please get vaccinated to make
our environment safe for all.

The magazine is such a good representation of everything the
school, the girls and the staff have accomplished over the course of
the year and is a momento we should all be very proud of. Enjoy
                                   the read.

MATRICS DONATE THEIR SHOES
On Monday, 29 November, our Matric Class of 2021
wrote their final English examination paper. And as is
Parktown tradition, and has been for many years, the
Matrics left behind their school shoes as they exited
the hall.

The shoes have been donated to the "Footloose"
Shoe Collection run by the St Vincent de Paul
Society. This is a non-profit social service
organisation dedicated to serving people in need.
These donations are distributed to children in need,
many of whom often do not go to school because
they do not have shoes to wear.
Thank you, Class of 2021!

A message from our Director of Sport, Mrs
McCreesh…
Sport starts with a bang in January, especially for the Aquatic sports. We have put together a
programme to start training the week before school starts to try and get fitness going. The girls must
keep up their exercise over the holidays to avoid injuries when they start the competitive season in
Term 1. All are welcome to the programme below; it is highly encouraged that the girls who are a part
of the activities mentioned below attend, as league fixtures start in the first week of school.
