RACE NEUTRALIZATION Race neutralization is a short-lived stoppage or pausing of a race. Race neutraliza- tions are used most often in road racing to facilitate the passing of one race field by another race field. WHY? TIMING CHIPS USA Cycling Racing Rules state: Taking pace or assistance from any outside means Timing chips MUST be secured to the FORK as close to the axle as practical with is forbidden. Including holding on to a motor vehicle or taking pace from riders in a TWO zip ties. Failure to secure in this fashion, will result in missed reads, and will different race that is concurrently on the same course [relegation or disqualification]. affect your results. Keeping in mind that riders in different races may not “take pace” from those in another race, the concept and practice of neutralizing the slower race has been de- veloped. Very occasionally the faster race is neutralized to allow the slower race to fi nish without interference. We would rather NOT do race neutralization, however, with the number of race categories and athletes, it is necessary to run more than one race on the circuit to ac- commodate all those who wish to compete. It is not unusual for one race to overtake another in this situation. Without intervention, the races sometimes fi nish together in one field distorting the results of both races and making it difficult, if not impos- sible, to separate the placing. HOW? An official, usually a motorcycle referee, will signal the neutralization of the slower race by a double sounding of a whistle (or horn) and/or by raising a red flag or bar- rage paddle. The official may also indicate that the riders in the field should stay to TIME CUT the left or right side of the racecourse. There is a time cut for each Stage. For the Pro Men & Women’s Criterium Prologue, As soon as the neutralization is signaled, the riders in the field being neutralized riders must complete 50% of the laps, before being pulled. Stage 1, the ITT, the should slow and remain behind the neutralizing vehicle until the neutralization is time cut is 25%. If an athlete experiences a mechanical, or puncture during the ended by a single sounding of a whistle or horn, and/or by withdrawing the red flag stage, but completes the stage, they will not be eliminated, but rather will receive a or barrage paddle. The neutralization is usually terminated when the faster race is pro-rated time. Stage 2/3, time cut is the winner’s time plus 10%. Time cut for all 30 seconds to 1 minute ahead of the slower race field, or when the official deems it other categories is the winner’s time plus 15%. If an individual, or group is lapped, appropriate. and consequently pulled by the official, they must complete the lap, cross the fi nish line, and report to the chief judge & they will be given a pro-rated time, and that Very often, in the case of a small breakaway it is necessary to neutralize the field. pro-rated time must be within 15 or 20% of the winner’s time, respectively. Failure This is the normal practice and may be an advantage for the breakaway riders. to report to the chief judge, following removal by official, may result in disqualifica- tion. Riders must complete 50% or more of the stage, before being pulled. For Stage RIDER CONDUCT 4, the P1/2 Men and Women must fi nish within 15% of the winner’s time, and all At all times racers should remember that they are representatives of their sponsors, other categories must fi nish within 20%.
