AIMS OF TRANSITION YEAR • Maturity by taking more responsibility • Skills & active learning • Bridge gap between Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate • Build resilience and confidence by trying new things
TRANSITION YEAR PLAN • Transition Year planning must be done months in advance due to varied activities that need to be booked. Schools compete to get the best workshops etc. on the dates they want them….. • Students furnished with TY Timetable and Calendar plan • Subject to change each year after careful evaluation of TY Modules / Activities / Workshops • Student feedback, teacher feedback, value for money
CAREER DECISION MAKING PROCESS, WORK EXPERIENCE & REACH + • Work Experience is an essential part of the Transition Year • Currently using blended model – this includes.. • One block week of work in February • 9 x 1 day work experience on Wednesdays • 9 x 1day social action experience on Wednesdays (under curriculum review due to COVID-19 19 pandemic).
DEVELOPING CAREER AWARENESS • Students reflect on all work experience and social action by keeping a digital diary - Reach + • Part of TY funds goes to the purchase of Reach+, a digital platform that students use for 3 years • TY students work mostly on developing awareness about vocational identity through self assessment and reflection, vocational testing and class discussion. There is also a big emphasis on subject choice for Leaving Certificate • In 5th and 6th year, students spend time developing their knowledge about further education, apprenticeships, 3rd level education, public jobs, funding etc..
• Transition Year is a one-year school programme between Junior and Senior Cycle. • It is designed to act as a bridge TRANSITION between the two by facilitating the smooth transition from the YEAR more dependent learning of the Junior Cycle to the more independent self-directed learning required for the Senior Cycle

PARENTS’ ROLE • Support the move towards maturity by checking in with your son about; • Self-directed learning: projects, teamwork, presentations, research etc • Reflections in journal: weekly, Learning Events via workshops and/or guest speakers, work experience • Support your son to secure work experience • Promote self- management skills e.g. meeting deadlines • Inter-personal skills: making new friends & working in a team • Wellbeing – You are a resilience builder
PERCEPTIONS OF TY Difficult to study in 5th year? NCCA Longitudinal study (1999) found: TY students scored on average 26 more points in their LC results (versus extra 5 for repeat candidates) 1.3 times more likely to apply & enter third level & less likely to fail first year college exams Study compiled by Irish Secondary Students Union and DES (2014)

COST Total Cost: €350 Deposit: €100 This fee covers workshops, courses, guest speakers, buses and most activity-based trips. It does not cover Gaisce overnight trip or school tour. NEXT STEPS • Chat about your options at home. • Complete the form by 12 March 2021 & return to office. • Students will be interviewed for a place in TY. Their suitability will be assessed in accordance with their school record. • If you are offered a place in TY, you will receive an email. • To accept, the student should write a formal email to roisin.mcsharry@garbally.ie and pay the deposit of €100 by the date given.
