Tauranga Bridge Marina’s
FROM THE LOOKOUT…
October 2017
Welcome to the Tauranga Bridge Marina newsletter 2017 Spring edition. In this
issue we feature a number of articles of importance and
interest to Berthholders, boat owners and marina users.
What a fantastic campaign! The early
starts were worth it - watching Team New
Zealand crush the defenders 7-1 in
Bermuda. In the 35th America’s Cup
Match, the Kiwi boat was simply too quick for the Americans.
Team New Zealand did us all proud and we are very excited for the
36th Americas Cup being held in Auckland early 2021 with the
protocol already announced for AC36. The spin off from hosting
this prestigious event is undoubtedly advantageous to the marine
industry and New Zealand as a whole.
For more information and the AC36 protocol go to:

We were fortunate to get a close-up picture of Peter Burling
holding the Auld Mug at the recent Cup Celebration held in
Tauranga.
MARINA MAINTENANCE
This Winter has seen a busy maintenance programme maintaining
our 20 year old marina. Replacing deteriorated cracked piles on A &
B piers and identifying corroded pile guides, corner brackets, timber
walers and through-bolts where required. Mattia and Enea from
Italy, are powering through the programme and hope to complete
the majority of the works by November.
WET & FORGET annual spraying of piers to clear moss, mould and algae has been completed.
1TSUNAMI CONTINGENCY PLAN
In the event of a tsunami warning the marina staff have a procedure to follow and if advised
to evacuate, will lock up and leave the site. To warn marina users on site there is a tsunami
warning and marina staff are evacuating the site the fog horn will be activated outside the
office window with 10 short blasts to the north and 10 to the south.
If you hear this warning please switch on your radio, TV or if you have access to internet check out
the BOP Civil Defence website for further instruction. Directors wish to make it clear that Marina
Staff and security people at night are not expected to wait until all Marina users who are on site
have themselves evacuated. We suggest subscribing to the
BOP Civil Defence for emergency alerts.

Waste, Hazardous Waste and Recycling
The proper disposal of waste is important to avoid compromising our marina and the Tauranga
Harbour environment.
Taking responsibility for our individual actions regarding waste disposal is vital. We provide large
general waste and recycling bins at the head of all pier gates. Recycling benefits the environment
and separating your recycling from regular waste on board your vessel will make it easier to dispose
of appropriately when you come ashore.
We have been advised by our waste management contractor that come next
year we will be unable to co-mingle glass with other recyclables. This is
something we need to consider and our options if we decide to provide a
glass recycling station on site. The glass station would have three bins for
separating brown, green and clear glass and would take up approximately
4.5m x 1.5m area. We would appreciate any helpful feedback/ideas you may have.
A hazardous waste receptacle for oil is located opposite the amenities door next to the hardstand
fence line. The igloo is for waste OIL only. There is also an oil filter bin for used OIL FILTERS only.
Empty oily containers and rags must not be left in this area. Please dispose of in a heavy-duty
rubbish bag and place in the general waste receptacles either in the hardstand or marina bins.
Left over paint and thinners is your responsibility to take off site and dispose of. Te Maunga and
Maleme Street transfer stations will take paints and thinners as well as some paint retailers.
Unfortunately old petrol and diesel cannot be disposed of at the Transfer Station anymore and we
must point out dumping
dumping these products into the oil igloo is NOT ACCEPTABLE
ACCEPTABLE as it creates a
combustible combination and the oil contractor cannot transport in the same tanker. We are
exploring other options and will let you know as soon as we can offer a suitable solution.
The sewerage pump out facility is located on the fuel dock.
PERMIT PARKING Leading into the boating season this Labour
Weekend the demand for a carpark will rise. A & B Pier boat owners –
please remember to display your orange parking permit (pictured) inside
your vehicle’s front window to avoid being towed away. One parking
permit per berth. All other vehicles are to park in the main carpark south of the marina building.
2Electrical Standards
With longer, warmer days boating activity will set to increase. We cannot stress enough the
importance of ensuring your boat’s electrical fittings comply with the relevant NZ Safety Standards.
An annual RCD check on marina shore power modules was completed in September by Electriserv.
We recommend boat owners conduct a RCD self-check every time you reconnect to shore power
by pressing the RCD button located next to the power module connection.
A reminder that all vessels connected to shore power must be plugged in with a locking ring plug
(IP67), have a current electrical warrant of fitness (EWOF) and the lead be annually tested and
tagged. If you are unsure on your connection please contact the office for advice.
DOGS We are noticing a lot more dogs coming with
their families to the marina. Please respect our marina
rules and keep your dog on a lead at all times.
FROM SECURITY….
Our security team do a fantastic job every night keeping a watchful eye on the
marina site and our boats. We want to keep the guards, our staff and marina
users safe while walking the docks and tripping over hoses on the piers can
easily occur. If you have a garden hose (and any other items including bikes,
dinghies, etc) stored on the finger pontoon please store them on your boat.
STAFF TRAINING The NZ Marina Operators Association awarded Anna Barnes with a
training scholarship to attend a four-day Intermediate Marina Management course on the Gold
Coast in August. Accredited by the Global Marina
Institute (GMI) it is designed to provide marina
personnel in a leadership position with fast-track
training in the critical issues in marinas. It is also an
essential course in a career path leading to the
globally recognised Certified Marina Manager
qualification.
Well done Anna! (pictured receiving her certificate).
Before you contract someone to work on your boat please
check with the marina office to ensure they have been
inducted.
We have a list of contractors who have been inducted to work on site at
Tauranga Bridge Marina. They have gone through the induction process and provided us with a
copy of their appropriate insurances to work on vessels at the marina.
The Contractors Booklet and Application form are available in the marina office or on our website
www.marina.co.nz under Forms and Newsletters.

So What Changed? The new Navigation Safety Bylaw came into effect on
1 July 2017. The key changes are:
• Lifejackets – people on board vessels 6m or less must wear a properly fitting lifejacket at all
times unless the skipper has assessed the risk and advised it is safe to not wear one. There
are a number of exceptions to this rule, and these have not changed. All other vessels are still
required to carry a proper fitting lifejacket for everyone on board.
• Naming of Vessels – to help with identification, powered vessels over 4m and non-powered
vessels over 6m are required to be clearly marked with a name or number. Smaller vessels
are encouraged to ensure some form of identification is on their vessel to help with
determining ownership or knowing who we may be looking for in event of an emergency.
• Jetski/Personal Water Craft – All Jetski/Personal Water Craft using Bay of Plenty waterways
will need to register online through Auckland Council https://at.govt.nz/harbourmaster
• Moving Prohibited Zone – A moving prohibited zone has been established for large vessels
over 500 tonnes underway in the navigation channel of Tauranga Harbour. This means that
boaties are not allowed to navigate in the channel 500m in front of, and 50m each side of,
large vessels.
• Hunters Creek – For safety reasons, the Hunters Creek ski area is closed to ski traffic for 2
hours either side of low tide. During this time the 5 knot rule applies.

BOATYARD NEWS
The Christmas rush has started and bookings are filling up – if you require time on the hardstand
pre-Christmas please book in now. We are currently taking bookings for the end of November. If you
require space on the hardstand, please book now to avoid missing out before Christmas.
LIFT & HOLDS are still available up until Christmas
Book now, spaces are limited
Lift and Holds overnight are as popular as ever – book the last spot of the day and return to the water
7.30am the following morning. This is charged out as a ONE-WAY lift only.
ARE YOU VISITING A MARINA UP THE COAST OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD?
Did you know that to prevent the spread of marine pests the Northland, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty
marinas require visiting vessels to have been recently cleaned. That means:
Antifouled in the last SIX months
OR
Lifted & washed in the last ONE month
As proof of this – carry your latest invoice in the boat as your proof of a clean hull.
If you require a copy of your latest invoice, email the travelift office: travelift@xtra.co.nz
HEALTH & SAFETY IN THE BOATYARD
We ask that you treat the hardstand like a construction site - it is a high hazard area. Please wear covered
in footwear. No jandals are not allowed - jandals on wet decks are an accident waiting to happen.
Contractors working on your boat – please advise your contractor to ‘sign in’ to our office before they
commence work on your vessel. They must also have current Ship Repairers insurance of $5,000,000.00
minimum – this is standard procedure in all boatyards around the country. If they do not have insurance, they
are unable to work in our yard.
