Welcome back Harry. I have enjoyed my 5 months at Sandstone and would like to thank everybody, councillors staff and residents, for making me feel most welcome. Things have carried on over the past 5 months with routine tasks being completed or at least reaching a point close to completion. The Annual Electors meeting was held prior to the Council meeting on 27 February 2020, and the few who attended seemed satisfied with the effort and achievements of Council. There were a couple of questions relating to the photo display at the Town Hall and the need for more progress at the new park. President Beth Walton addressed the questions and indicated progress will be made prior to 30 June 2020. In closing I would sincerely like to thank council and particularly President Beth Walton for the opportunity to act as CEO, and the support given to me over the past 5 months. Best wishes to all. Eddie Piper Acting Chief Executive Officer 26 February 2020 3

20 HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book “Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior Early Travel to the East Murchison — continued, page 206 The early prospectors on their way to the new find at Black Range walked, rode a horse or camel if they had one, or better still rode in a horse-drawn dray or wagon that carried their meagre possessions and supplies from the railhead at Mt Magnet, 94 miles (as the crow flies) west of their destination. Water was scarce along the way, and had to be carried with them. There were also those who rode bicycles, carrying their possessions on their backs. The Western Australian State railway system had been extended from Mullewa to Cue in June 1898, so travel to the area was relatively easy as far as Mt Magnet or Cue, providing travellers had the money for the fare. In February of the same year, the railway line to Boulder had been completed, and in March the State line had been extended from Boulder to Menzies, so the Black Range district had two alternatives by way of rail services. Both Menzies (174 miles) and Mt Magnet (100 miles) were similar distance by road from the new find at Black Range. However, at this time, there had not been any rush to the area, although there were rumours of finds there. As was the case in most of the rest of Australia, Cobb & Co. provided the first public transport in the area. From 1899, before the discovery of the Black Range field, there was a weekly coach service connecting Cue to Lawlers via Lake Way, thus connecting the East Murchison, North Eastern and Eastern Goldfields, even if by a rather circuitous route. By 1905, following the discovery of gold in the Black Range area, and the forming of the township of Nungarra, there was a regular twice-weekly Cobb & Co. coach service passing through Black Range, running between Mt Magnet and Lawlers. This service ran until the railway took over the carriage of goods and passengers on the route from Mt Magnet to Sandstone, and traffic to and from Lawlers through Sandstone fell off to an unprofitable level. As hopeful new prospectors began arriving at the new field at Black Range in the early 1900s, the township of Nungarra began to take shape. The means of getting goods and equipment to the new area was by horse, bullock or donkey drawn wagons or on the backs of camels. With Mt Magnet being the closest railhead, the track between Nungarra and Mt Magnet was the one most used. These wagons travelled slowly as the wagoners needed to stop early enough each evening for their beasts to be hobbled out to graze whatever was available where they had camped. They usually did not carry feed for their draft animals, as it would have meant carrying less freight in the wagons. Providing there had been no rain, the roads were generally passable, with the track following the hardest ground and avoiding very sandy areas. However, following rains, the teams could be bogged down in the mud for weeks at a time. When animal teams hauling a wagon bogged down, other teams would unhook their horses or bullocks and hitch them onto the team in trouble once the ground had dried out sufficiently. Sometimes there would be many teams, as many as were necessary to move a bogged wagon, so they always got going again eventually. At times, it was necessary for teams to camp for weeks until the earth dried out before attempt- ing to move anything. On 15 March 1907, over 3 inches of rain fell in the Black Range district, halting all traffic, so much so that supplies began to run out. The wagons always got through eventually, but could be many weeks late over a 100 mile route, so the settlements they served frequently ran very short of vital commodities. …../ to be continued 20

22 Banana Scones with Maple Glaze Ingredients 2 cups self raising flour 3/4 cup wholemeal self raising flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Maple Glaze ingredients 50 grams chilled butter, chopped 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/4 cup icing sugar 3/4 cup (approx. 1 banana) plus 1 extra banana 2 teaspoons Maple Syrup thinly sliced (for decorating) 1 teaspoon water 3/4 cup milk Method 1. Preheat oven to 240C/220C fan forced. Grease a 20cm square cake pan. Line the base with baking paper. 2. Whisk together the self raising and wholemeal flours and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the butter. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine bread crumbs. Stir in the sugar. Make a well in the centre. Add the mashed banana and 160ml (2/3 cup) milk. Use a flat-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until the dough just comes together. 3 Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly until dough just comes togeth- er. Press dough to form a 3cm thick round. Use a round 5.5cm pastry cutter dipped in flour to cut out 12 rounds from the dough, gently pressing excess dough together as needed. Arrange rounds just touching over the base of the prepared pan. 4 Brush the tops of the dough rounds with the remaining milk. Top each with a slice of extra banana. Bake for 20 minutes or until the scones are light golden and sound hollow when tapped on top. 5 Meanwhile, to make the maple glaze, place both the ingredients in a small bowl with 1 teaspoon of water. Stir until smooth. 6 Drizzle the maple glaze over the scones and serve warm with butter or ricotta cheese. 22
