BOOMING BRISVEGAS! A review by Leisure Links participant, Kane. From 16th to 19th August, Rosie, Reece, Bryce, Nadine, Gabby, Pieter, Emma, Alexandra, Debbie and I spent the weekend outside of the cold, blustery, windy weather of Maitland and into the warm, sunny, vibrant weather of Queensland staying in beautiful Brisbane, exploring its’ whimsical areas filled with plethoras of wonder. Our first day began flying out of Newcastle Airport. It was the first time in ten years that I had visited Queensland. I had a few trips to the Gold Coast with my family, but I had never actually visited the capital of the state. After a slightly turbulent flight and a cup of coffee we arrived...I was in for a surprise! During the walk to our hotel, it was teeming with hustle and bustle of people leaving their workplace for the day, enjoying a post-work beer, coffee or lunch at the bars and coffee shops and being relieved that it’s now the start of the weekend. As we got to our hotel on Albert Street, I entered my hotel room and the first thing I did was look at the stunning view from my balcony showing the landscape of the city of and the glowing Brisbane river complete with the Story Bridge in the distance. It was breathtaking! On Saturday, we all went on a long drive to Beerwah to visit Australia Zoo, which was home to the late friend of all wild animals, Steve Irwin aka “The Crocodile Hunter ”. The zoo was brimming with variations of animal species such as Galapagos Tortoises, species of birds and intimidating snakes such as the King Cobra and Brown Snake. Our main event for the day was the famous Wildlife Warriors 101 Show at the “Crocoseum” giving us instructions, in a comical way, in what to do when you’re bitten by a venomous snake. Demonstration of a variety of colourful birds native to the Australian wildlife followed. Then the feeding of Murray the 300kg saltwater crocodile made famous by Steve Irwin. After our exciting visit to the zoo, we observed the most breathtaking view from the nearby Glass House Mountains. That night we had a wonderful night out at Brisbane’s Eagle Street Pier, followed by a night of jamming and crooning to live music. On Sunday, we had a relaxing visit walking to the Brisbane Botanical Gardens. After that, we walked through the beautiful Southbank and walked past the famous Streets Beach. It is Australia’s only unique man-made lagoon surrounded by luscious plants and white hot sand. I felt tempted to swim in it and just relax, even if I didn’t bring my swimwear! At the middle of Southbank, through the beautiful rainforest walk, was the famous ‘BRISBANE’ sign and the Wheel of Brisbane, a 60m Ferris wheel where you can partake in sightseeing, looking down below at the sights and famous landmarks of Brisbane. Rosie and I gleefully went on to view the atmosphere via our gondola. Later that night we took a CityCat from Eagle Street Pier to Hamilton to stuff our faces at Eat Street, a carnival themed food market filled with stalls selling various types of cultural food. Monday was unfortunately our last day in the beautiful city. But we weren’t going to waste it, no no no! To spend our final few hours in Brisbane, we went shopping at the various stores at the Queen Street Mall. And like that, our weekend at Brisbane was over but we leave lots of very fun memories and laughs. Here’s hoping that we’ll visit this wonderful city again in the near future... Until the next adventure...Happy Trails! Kane. 2
