         National Research Council 2002
Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research
In brief, this report suggests that our current forestry research capacity is
neither adequate now, nor poised for success in the coming years.
“In the committee’s opinion forestry research capacity is at a crossroads, if
not a precipice.”
“If left unchanged, its future will entail a steady erosion of intellectual and
institutional capacity, and dwindling capacity and impact.
Alternatively, forestry research could renew its commitment to innovation,
cooperation, relevance, and extension in order to prosper and enhance the
practice of forestry in this century.
This latter vision will require levels of cooperation, support, real exchange of
financial and technical support, and stakeholder support that do not currently
exist.” EXCEPT …

Great decisions are made with the best possible information.

Forest Projection and Planning System (FPS)

“The most widely used, fully integrated
                   forest management system.”

An innovative, “cutting-edge”, robust, software suite that
provides analytically and biometrically correct answers
to forestry professionals and management teams.

Stand and Individual Tree Competition Models in
Heterogeneous Multi-Cohort Coniferous Forests

By: Shawn de France
Advisors: Andrew Nelson, Mark Kimsey, Dan Opalach
• Stand and Individual Trees
                     • Distant Dependent vs Distant
                       Independent
                     • Emphasis will be placed on
                       heterogeneous multi-cohort
stands to verify the accuracy of
                       competition indices in non-
                       evenage forests.
                     • Previous studies done in
                       evenage, single species forests,
or with data that was collected
over a short period of time

Competition Models
Competition Models
Wilcox Permanent Plots

• Data from the Wilcox permanent plots on the Warm
  Springs Reservation
• DBH & height for every tree measured approximately
  every 5 years since 1985
• 11 plots, each 2.5 acres
• Stem-mapped Plots
• Stands are multi-aged with variable densities
Unevenage Management

• Current Emphasis on Unevenage Management
• Wildlife Corridors, Extended SMZ, Public Input – Adverse
  Visual Effects of Clearcut Regimes
• This research project will review and analyze competition
models specifically in mixed species, multi-aged stands to
specify how they perform under the growing trends of
  unevenage management
