About Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta THE INTERNATIONAL FLEET OF TALL SHIPS MAKES A TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO THE MERSEY OVER THE LATE MAY BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND. The Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta, organised in partnership with Sail Training International and taking place at the same time as Bordeaux Wine Festival, will link Liverpool, Dublin and Bordeaux through four days of maritime magic. Liverpool’s history with Tall Ships LONG BEFORE THE AGE OF STEAM, THE RIVER MERSEY WAS A FOREST OF MASTS AS MERCHANT SHIPS PLIED THEIR TRADE BETWEEN ITS DOCKS AND IRELAND, EUROPE, THE AMERICAS AND BEYOND. The city’s love affair with sail has endured. And if all you ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by then Liverpool also remains a must-visit port of call for any serious sailor. Over the past 30 years, Liverpool has played host to several festival fleets, and millions of visitors who have flocked to the Mersey to see these magnificent maritime beauties at close quarters. The official Tall Ships Race brought more than 60 vessels from Europe and North America to Liverpool in 1984, their visit coinciding with the International Garden Festival. Parade of Sail WHEN: MONDAY 28 MAY TIME: 12PM – 1.30PM FROM 12PM THE TALL SHIPS WILL MUSTER IN FORMATION FOR THE PARADE OF SAIL ON THE RIVER MERSEY. Tall Ships Fleet FEW THINGS MATCH THE SIGHT OF THE MERSEY FULL OF SAILS – AND THE THREE FESTIVALS TALL SHIPS REGATTA WILL BE A WEEKEND FOR SAILING FANS TO SAVOUR. The river will play host to some of the most beautiful and evocative Tall Ships still sailing the seas, whilst also welcoming a wonderful range of other rigged and masted craft over the four days, which together will create a truly memorable occasion. The Tall Ships will be berthed on the Liverpool Cruise Terminal, Canning Dock, Canning Half Tide Dock and Albert Dock during the festival weekend. Name: BELEM CLASS: A HEIGHT: 34M NATIONALITY: FRANCE LENGTH: 58M YEAR BUILT: 1896 ENTERED BY: FOUNDATION BELEM HOME PORT: BREST NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 48 RIG: BARQUE 3 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 8 BELEM is not just a beautiful, 120-year-old three-masted tall ship, but she is also classed as a historic monument. The barque started life transporting sugar from the West Indies and cocoa and coffee from South America to Nantes, while previous owners include the second Duke of Westminster, who converted her in to a luxury yacht, and beer baron Sir Arthur Guinness who sailed her around the world. During her sea-going life she has escaped both volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Name: LORD NELSON CLASS: A HEIGHT: 33.60M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 40.8M YEAR BUILT: 1985 ENTERED BY: JUBILEE SAILING TRUST HOME PORT: SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 42 RIG: BARQUE 3 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 8 The handsome LORD NELSON is a real head-turner. Named after the famous British admiral, she is also one of only two vessels worldwide to be specially designed and built to allow able bodied and disabled people to sail the seas together. Lord Nelson is owned by the Jubilee Sailing Trust which over three decades has taken more than 30,000 people to sea, including 12,000 with disabilities and 5,000 wheelchair users. 10
Name: PELICAN OF LONDON CLASS: A HEIGHT: 21.20M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 34.60M YEAR BUILT: 1948 ENTERED BY: ADVENTURE UNDER SAIL LTD HOME PORT: WEYMOUTH NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 32 RIG: BARQUENTINE 3 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 7 Formerly an Arctic fishing trawler and then a coastal trading vessel, Pelican of London was transformed in to a sail training ship in 2007. She is unique among square riggers in that her sleek hull form comes from the speedy greyhound clippers of the 19th century, giving her a real turn of speed. A long poop deck was added later. Meanwhile her barquentine rig and sail plan is derived from the Barbary Coast pirate ships. Name: MORGENSTER CLASS: A HEIGHT: 25M NATIONALITY: NETHERLANDS LENGTH: 38.04M YEAR BUILT: 1919 ENTERED BY: MORGENSTER HOME PORT: DEN HELDER, NETHERLANDS NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 36 RIG: BRIG NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 10 Under full canvas the sleek, speedy and elegant Morgenster is a magnificent sight. The class A tall ship is nearly a century old, and was originally built just after the Great War for deep sea fishing. Owners Marion and Harry Mutter transformed her in to a square-sailed brig in 2008, and now she plies the oceans as a training ship. Musicians are especially welcome on board. 11
Name: ROYAL HELENA CLASS: A RIG: BARQUENTINE 3 NATIONALITY: BULGARIA HEIGHT: 32.43 M YEAR BUILT: 2009 LENGTH: 44.60 M HOME PORT: VARNA ENTERED BY: TOPSAIL LTD The Bulgarian Tall Ship Royal Helena was built in 2009 with the intention to promote Sail Training. Despite her young age, the Royal Helena has already taken part in many journeys and competed in 2016 Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta. Join the Ship to help create more exciting memories! Royal Helena is a three-masted Bulgarian barquentine with a hull made of steel and a teak-covered deck. She can accommodate up to 37 trainees for multiple-day journeys, and as many as 120 for day cruises. Being very new, the Ship combines the experience of sailing on traditional Tall Ships with all the modern comforts and safety features. Step on board to find the latest navigation equipment, air conditioning in cabins and water desalination plant, among others. Name: TS ROYALIST CLASS: A HEIGHT: 24.38 M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 23.32 M YEAR BUILT: 2014 ENTERED BY: MARINE SOCIETYAND SEACADETS HOME PORT: PORTSMOUTH, UK NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 24 RIG: BRIG NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 10 TS Royalist is the Sea Cadets flagship, a training brig that takes twenty-four cadets to sea for six day voyages. The vessel was designed by Acubens, built during 2014 / 2015 at the Spanish shipyard of Astilleros Gondan. The Princess Royal officially named the Marine Society and Sea Cadets’ flagship, TS ROYALIST. 12
Name: BELLE POULE CLASS: B HEIGHT: 28.98M NATIONALITY: FRANCE LENGTH: 30.40M YEAR BUILT: 1932 ENTERED BY: MARINE NATIONALE - ECOLE NAVALE HOME PORT: BREST NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 12 RIG: TOPSAIL SCHOONER 2 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 16 French naval training vessel Belle Poule was launched in 1932 and her design based on a traditional fishing vessel uses off the coast of Iceland. In 1940 the two-masted schooner escaped the advancing enemy and sailed for the coast of England, where she and her sister ship Etoile were based at Portsmouth and used as training ships by the French Naval Free Force. Belle Poule’s home port is the naval base at Brest. Name: MAYBE CLASS: B HEIGHT: 24.07M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 22M YEAR BUILT: 1933 ENTERED BY: STEVE SWALLOW RIG: BRIG NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 14 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 4 One of the friendliest ships afloat, Maybe was built in Amsterdam for Jan Jacob von Rietschoten, father of the ‘Flying Dutchman’ Cornelis ‘Conny’ von Rietschoten, and originally designed for round the world cruising. She was in the first ever Tall Ships Race in 1956, one of only a few ships from that event to still be taking part, and has sailed the Mediterranean, Atlantic and through the Panama Canal. 13
Name: LA MALOUINE CLASS: B HEIGHT: 19.75M NATIONALITY: FRANCE LENGTH: 22.85M YEAR BUILT: 1969 ENTERED BY: ROY BLAIN KERR HOME PORT: SAINT-MALO, FRANCE NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 20 RIG: BRIGANTINE NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 8 French-registered and Scottish based, the pretty two-masted La Malouine started life in Gdansk and was transformed in to the current brigantine in 1992, sailing the Baltic Sea under the name Willem. Tall Ship La Malouine is a non-profit organisation and takes young people sailing, usually for no charge, or for a small donation. Name: ATYLA CLASS: B HEIGHT: 26.50M NATIONALITY: VANUATU LENGTH: 24.28M YEAR BUILT: 1984 ENTERED BY: ATYLA FOUNDATION RIG: STAYSAIL SCHOONER 2 NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 15 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 9 A beautiful wooden schooner built by hand in Spain in the early 1980s, and one of the few of its kind still in operation anywhere in the world. Painted a vivid scarlet and inspired by schooners of the 19th century, the two-masted Atyla is a multilingual ship which plies the ocean waves throughout the summer months offering exciting experiences to sailors of all levels, and winters at the Maritime Museum in Bilbao. 14
Name: ARAWAK CLASS: B HEIGHT: 22.69M NATIONALITY: FRANCE LENGTH: 20.83M YEAR BUILT: 1954 ENTERED BY: CAP ARCHIPELS HOME PORT: LAURIENT, FRANCE NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 16 RIG: GAFF KETCH NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 4 French-built ketch Arawak hails from the Union et Travail shipyard in Les Sables-d’Olonne and was built as a tuna fishing boat for work in the Bay of Biscay. She also previously plied the waters around Brittany, before being bought by Christian and Suzanne de Parada in 1986 and transformed to help to train young people to sail. Name: MASTER FRANK CLASS: B HEIGHT: 13.49M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 11.79M YEAR BUILT: 1896 ENTERED BY: JOE PENNINGTON HOME PORT: RAMSEY, ISLE OF MAN NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 1 RIG: GAFF CUTTER NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 2 Heralded on her launch in 1896 as “strongly built and bids fair to be a good, useful boat”, the Master Frank is the oldest ‘longliner’ cod fishing boat on the Isle of Man. She was built at Ramset on the island, and named after the son of her first owner, a Whitehaven fish dealer called Mr W Shakley. And this Manx beauty has certainly turned out to be both strong and useful, being used for fishing until 1978. She was restored by her present owner, master carpenter Joe Pennington in the 1990s. 15

She was officially donated to the Ecole Navale, the French naval academy, in 2010, and since then has been used by the naval school’s students as well as young sailors with different backgrounds. Hosanna is no stranger to Tall Ships events, having taken part in the Tall Ships Race in four times between 2012 and 2016. Name: CITY OF LONDON CLASS: C HEIGHT: 18.57M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 12.83M YEAR BUILT: 2016 NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 6 RIG: BM CUTTER NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 2 One of the youngest ships in the race, the TS City of London was launched two years ago and is operated by the Marine Society & Sea Cadets charity. The sea cadets will hope they are on a wave too after City of London’s MSSC stablemate, the TS Royalist, won last year’s Tall Ships Race, bringing home a haul of trophies. 16
Name: SIR STELIOS CLASS: C HEIGHT: 18.57M NATIONALITY: UK LENGTH: 12.83M YEAR BUILT: 2017 NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 6 RIG: BM CUTTER NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 2 The newly-launched Sir Stelios is a Marine Society & Sea Cadets training ship which flies under the British flag and is based in the Solent, providing nautical adventures for young people in the waters around the UK and the near continent. The Rustler 42 yacht was built in Falmouth and is the MSSC’s second training ship, after the TS City of London which is also competing in the Three Festivals Tall Ships Regatta. Name: JUAN DE LANGARA CLASS: C HEIGHT: 18.44 M NATIONALITY: SPAIN LENGTH: 18.25 M YEAR BUILT: 1983 ENTERED BY: ASOCIACION JUAN DE LANGARA HOME PORT: LA CORUNA, SPAIN NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 9 RIG: BM SCHOONER 2 NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 3 After the Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Races in 1990, a group of liaison officers from La Coruna, who were all sailors, were so taken with the philosophy of the races and the sail training experience they decided to charter a boat and race themselves. This group ran the Liaison Office when the Cutty Sark Tall Ships’ Races returned to La Coruna in 1994 then chartered Ice Maiden for the races in 1996, receiving sponsorship from the La Coruna port authority. 17

More recently she has been used in outreach work providing teamwork and leadership opportunities with disadvantaged people. Name: BRIAN BORU CLASS: B HEIGHT: 0.00M NATIONALITY: IRELAND LENGTH: 16.16 M YEAR BUILT: 1962 NUMBER OF TRAINEES: 10 RIG: GAFF KETCH NUMBER OF PERMANENT CREW: 4 Sail in the wake of the Vikings, the Normans, the Monastic settlers, Cromwell’s Fleet and of course, the Wild Native Irish in the ship named after the legendary High King of Munster and Ireland, Brian Ború. We have a traditional gaff rigged wooden sailing ketch (ship) specifically adapted for carrying passengers on voyages of discovery of heritage and wildlife. We sail on the Waterford River estuary, where the three sister rivers (Nore, Suir, & Barrow) meet the sea, and along the coast of Ireland’s Ancient East. 18
Lancashire Nobbies WITH THEIR STOUT LINES, WIDE SIDEDECKS, TRIM SAILS AND SHALLOW HULLS, NOBBYS WERE ONCE A REGULAR SIGHT IN THE WATERS OFF SOUTHPORT AND IN MORECAMBE BAY, WHERE THEY TRAWLED FOR SHRIMPS AND FLATFISH. Watch the plucky little Nobby boats racing on the river on Saturday morning, 26 May. Then on from 12pm on Sunday 27 May, step on board and take a closer look at them, moored against the historic backdrop of the Grade I listed Albert Dock, the Nobby Owners Club welcomes you to “Come Aboard”. Finally, enjoy the spectacle of the ships skimming across the water as they join the Bank Holiday Monday Parade of Sail which launches this wonderful international regatta. 29th Liverpool Canoe Polo International WHEN: SATURDAY 26TH MAY - SUNDAY 27TH MAY WHERE: PRINCE’S DOCK, LIVERPOOL WATERS TIME: SATURDAY 09.00 - 19.00 / SUNDAY 08.00 - 16.30 As a team contact sport Canoe Polo with goals fixed at each end of the pitch can be likened to playing basketball on water in a canoe. As a full on contact sport the competitor needs to have the kayaking skills to adjust and turn their boat within the activities of a water based hand ball team. And at the close of the festival, as the Tall Ships sail away, the bottle will embark on its own journey as the installation crosses the Bay of Biscay to Bordeaux aboard the Tall Ship La Malouine. Liverpool artist Faith Bebbington creates hand-built, dynamic figurative sculptures of animals, using recycled waste materials. The tabby Cat has been created from around 1,000 reclaimed milk containers, collected by staff in the city’s Cunard Building, cut up by hand by the artist, then stitched on to chicken wire – and at 15ft long, it’s Bebbington’s biggest creation yet. Faith will be leading family arts and crafts workshops in Mermaid Courtyard. 28

Artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon fuses lunar imagery, moonlight, and a surround- soundscape by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones. Take a closer look at the moon’s surface created from detailed NASA imagery and reproduced on a 1:500,000 scale, which is lit up from within. The specially-curated Under the Moon programme of lunar-inspired events includes an Astrophysic’s lecture and discussion, moon inspired classical music recitals, voyage-discovery theatre and planetary storytelling for all ages.
