Liverpool’s history
     with Tall Ships
LONG BEFORE THE AGE OF STEAM, THE RIVER MERSEY WAS A FOREST
OF MASTS AS MERCHANT SHIPS PLIED THEIR TRADE BETWEEN ITS
DOCKS AND IRELAND, EUROPE, THE AMERICAS AND BEYOND.

The city’s love affair with sail has endured. And if all you ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her

Over the past 30 years, Liverpool has played
host to several festival fleets, and millions of
visitors who have flocked to the Mersey to see
these magnificent maritime beauties at close

The official Tall Ships Race brought more than
60 vessels from Europe and North America to
Liverpool in 1984, their visit coinciding with the

monument. The barque started life transporting sugar from the West Indies and cocoa and coffee
from South America to Nantes, while previous owners include the second Duke of Westminster, who

Named after the famous British admiral, she is also one of only two vessels worldwide to be specially
designed and built to allow able bodied and disabled people to sail the seas together.
Lord Nelson is owned by the Jubilee Sailing Trust which over three decades has taken more than
30,000 people to sea, including 12,000 with disabilities and 5,000 wheelchair users.

Formerly an Arctic fishing trawler and then a coastal trading vessel, Pelican of London was transformed
in to a sail training ship in 2007.
She is unique among square riggers in that her sleek hull form comes from the speedy greyhound

Over time ice melted, seas rose, land bridges were covered, and distinct and different landforms
were created, eventually becoming the British Isles, Ireland and continental Europe.
But that deep Celtic connection remains, in outlook, personality and culture.

FLOCK TO A GIANT GILDED BIRDCAGE FILLED WITH A FEAST OF VISUAL AND
MUSICAL TREATS AND ENJOY SOME BIRDY CHAOS THIS MAY BANK HOLIDAY.

Feisty felines, a fluttering bird, aerial hoop and a spot of tap dancing are the order of the day,
with Katy-Anne Bellis and her fellow performers Stephanie Greer and Naomi Giffen promising
to entrance and enchant visitors to the Pier Head. Two cats and a canary are caught in a manic
cartoon chase around the confines of the cage as French farce meets Liverpudlian wit in this
fantastical flight of fancy. Hope Street Ltd-trained Bellis is a clown, cabaret artist, songstress
and spreader of joy, with a passion for puppetry and a love of creating anarchic performances
in unusual spaces. The birdcage is a collaboration between surreal theatre company Caustic
     Widows and Barnton Circus.

LIFE BOAT IS A 6 METRE LONG TIMBER KEEL WITH FOUR RIB SECTIONS
THAT FORM THE SKELETON OF A SMALL BOAT.

Rock gently, turn slowly, help push the boat… and listen to the LIFE BOAT alphabet. Make conversation
with fellow travellers and crew. Sit with Death and stare at HOPE in the mirror... Then post your forecast
for the future in the Ship’s Log... The ICD Life Boat is about slowness, kindness and gentleness. It is
about getting your bearings whilst rocking gently and looking at the world from a slowly changing point
of view. The structure is a 6 metre long timber keel with four rib sections. It forms the skeleton of a
small boat. Canvas hammocks are strung between each of the rib sections. The boat turns in very slow
circles. It is a contemplative ride destined to create a beautiful and engaging atmosphere in cities, festival
settings and other locations...
