Chairman Joe Boyd recalled the electronics company chose to locate in Melbourne because superior schools were essential in attracting, for hire, the highly trained engineers and scientists vital to the emerging space age. Education for some time had been the hallmark in the development of South Brevard County. The pioneering Goode family donated land and neighbors helped build the tiny first school on the lagoon bluff in 1883. The four to five month term was taught by the daughters of the most educated of local families. The class of six or seven white children attended in the morning. Black children, sons and daughters of former slaves attended in the afternoon. This little red school house is preserved today in the Florida Tech Gardens. W. T. Wells, of Green Gables, a major Melbourne investor in 1897 opened the first high school in Melbourne. It closed by 1900 because there were no more students. With school tax money an impressively large school was built in 1919 for grades 1 – 12 during the buildup of the Florida Land boom. From 1920 until 1925 the Melbourne population grew from 533 to nearly 3000. The new school was so crowded that temporary buildings housed the influx of students. Now there was a need for a “newer” new school. From 1923 until 1925 high school enrollment climbed from 93 to 233. The need for a separate school brought approval of a special tax to fund the first free standing Melbourne High School. Greetings, Welcome to 2021 and hopefully a better year for all. I had hoped to tell you that my rehabilitation was complete, and that I was back home and through with my three hours of physical rehab every day, but by next printing I hope to be able to say that. The physical therapy staff at Melbourne Terrace have got me walking, weight down to 198, and in good shape strength wise. Balance and distance walking remain my biggest challenges. I am well pleased and can highly recommend them to you. I have written many articles about weight control, good eating habits, and maintaining your physical condition. While I thought I was doing just that, my rapid decline from knee surgery proved otherwise. If you are overweight, then take action to lose some of that poundage you do not need. If you have let your physical conditioning become a thing of the past, then get to a gym or at least do a little research to develop a home training plan. From my own experience I see weight control and physical conditioning as the greatest drawbacks in recovery. Recently I had the two-shot vaccination for COVID and of all the shots I have had (plenty in my 38 years in Navy), this was the LEAST hurtful. I never felt the shot nor did I have ANY pain, redness, or complication. I highly recommend you take the shot if you get the chance, regardless of your age. It may seem to you that the vaccination plan is slow to bear results. The best advice I can give is to stay alert to what becomes available and then try your best to get in line. We all are looking forward to continuing the work of Helping Seniors in 2021. We have a new Executive Director on board. Rick Broderick is finalizing his move from the cold regions of Indiana to Melbourne. He now knows the agony of downsizing and that such is not an easy part of getting older (far younger then me) and is eager to start the job. Best wishes to all. Joe Steckler Elder Advocate
