“ MESSAGE FROM THE IMPERIAL POTENTATE OF SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL Welcome to St. Petersburg, Florida, and the 93rd edition of the East-West Shrine Game. This signature event, which benefits our philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children, is the longest running college all-star football game in the country. Over time, it has also become significant as a potential pathway to the NFL for the players. I also want to welcome and thank our donors, corporate sponsors, spectators and volunteers, and, of course the coaches and players, for being here with us today, and for being part of this important event, which we depend on to raise awareness of the Shriners organizations. Shriners International is a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. The fraternity founded Shriners Hospitals for Children as its official philanthropy in 1922. What began as one hospital dedicated primarily to caring for children affected by an epidemic of polio is now a world-renowned health care system with 22 locations in three countries. Our fraternity, which has nearly 200 chapters in several countries and thousands of clubs around the world, continues to support this unique health care system. The primary mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children is to help children who need specialized medical care — wherever they may live. Our compassionate health care system has treated children from more than 150 countries, and conducts more than 100 medical outreach clinics outside of the U.S. every year. In 2016, 150 clinics were held in 16 foreign countries, reaching 4,583 children. Today, Shriners Hospitals for Children provides care for a full range of orthopaedic conditions, as well as burn injuries, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. At our locations, children receive the best possible care we can provide, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals in a compassionate family- centered setting, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children is also known for conducting innovative research to improve treatment protocols and the quality of life of people everywhere, and for offering excellent education programs to medical professionals. Shriners International has a long, distinguished history and tradition of brotherhood, fellowship and service to others. Members of our fraternity are part of an international community committed to improving lives and making the world a better place. Men from all walks of life have chosen to become Shriners. We are bound together by shared values, and a desire to have fun and help others. We are proud to be part of the East-West Shrine Game, and would welcome an opportunity to share more information about both the fraternity and the philanthropy with you. Any Shriner here would be happy to speak with you about the fraternity, and if you are interested, ensure that you receive all the information you would need through our new I AM R U membership referral program. All you need to do is ask. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Executive Director Harold Richardson, Chairman of the East-West Shrine Game Committee Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder, and all the committee members for their incredible dedication and commitment to this event. Your hard work has helped ensure the success of this year’s game. Again, we thank everyone for being here with us today, especially the players and coaches. We hope you will continue your support of Shriners Hospitals for Children in the years to come, and will consider becoming part of the worldwide family of Shriners International. Enjoy the game! In addition to being the nation’s first all-star football game, the East-West Shrine Game benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children and its mission to improve the lives of children — combining great football with an important cause. Last year’s game had an extra special, tangible representation of the dual purposes of the game. Playing OC for the West team was Tobijah Hughley, a former patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children Medical Center — Lexington, and a three-year starter for Louisville. Hughley was a patient of the Lexington Shriners Hospital from 2006 to 2010, and said he was able to compete in the East-West Shrine Game because of the excellent care he received at Shriners Hospitals for Children. Hughley sustained a dislocated hip playing football in middle school, and the injury required surgery and rehabilitation at Shriners Hospitals for Children. After being unable to play football for many months, he was finally able to return to the game he loved, thanks to the care he received at the Lexington Shriners Hospital. Hughley said his miraculous healing story is just one example of what the health care system does for children every day. We are pleased to have been a part of Hughley’s life, by providing both medical care and an opportunity to play in the East-West Shrine Game, and wish him all the best in the future.
