1 Francis Scott Key Post No. 11 Official Bulletin Vol. XXXIX No.4 OCTOBER — 2021 Masks not required if you have been vaccinated Francis Scott Key Post 11’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. COMMANDER’S ROLL CALL Greetings to all American Legion Post 11 members. The end of September marked the completion of my first 90 days as Commander. I must admit that it has been fast and steady. It has been much more involved than I had imagined. Just the amount of meetings and events both private and public takes up a lot of time. I am constantly trying to make sure that I pace myself and encourage the paid staff and all our volunteers to do the same. Patriots Day (September 11) recognition and observances throughout the country reminded us of all the acts of bravery, determination and commitment that followed to preserve our way of life. Special tribute was paid to all who served in defense of our nation. Whenever opportunity permits, give thanks to Service Members, Gold Star Family Members and First Responders. Unfortunately, this country and all around the world continue an all-out effort to combat the spread of COVID 19, so that we can get back to some sense of a normal life. There are those individuals that feel strongly about the way in which the virus is being handled. It is perfectly within individual rights as this is the land of the free, home of the brave. There are however sanitary steps for each one of us to take that will help prevent the spread, such as wearing a mask, maintaining social distancing, and frequent hand washing. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of us all doing our part to keep each other safe. I want to respond generally to complaints, issues and concerns from members and their families patronizing the Post. COVID 19 changed the lives of us all over the past 18 months. What did not change was the price of goods and services. Early on during the pandemic so many businesses completely shut down and The American Legion Post 11 was one of them. (No input, no output.) Charges for services had gone up such as, electric, gas, and water, those charg- es did not stop coming in while the Post was closed, yet those charges had to be paid. And when the Post re-opened, the price of food and alcohol also went up. When the post re-opened, resources used to pay for general services were dimin- ishing and there was nothing coming in for the offset. Operational cost increases without some return on investment in any business is not good. In the past couple of months Roll Call I have mentioned price adjustments. In part because there have not been any changes to the food or drink pric- es for some time. The other reason is because everything simply costs more. Bottom line up front, if consistent adjust- ments are not made to include good fundraising ideas, limiting services further, may be an option. Lastly on the subject, if you have complaints, issues and concerns with any paid staff or volunteer, I ask that you please put them in writing so that they may be formally addressed. I would like to close with good news. The American Legion helps all service members and their families. There are so many service members that may not be aware of their eligibility and benefits. I am happy to report that our Veteran Ser- vice Officer (VSO, First Vice Commander Otis Smith) and assistant Maggie Stinson have been very active assisting vet- erans with the help needed to process service-connected claims and if they qualify, healthcare through the VA. Current- ly, they are working 50 plus active cases, seven scheduled appointments through September, and 26 new veterans to con- tact and set up appointments during the month of October. Thank you for a job well done. One Band, One Sound.

Please stop by the post and pay your dues and hopefully we can reach our goal of 100% again. This year our Detachment Commander Mr. Mark Fayer of The Sons of The American Legion has chosen “Casey Cares” as his project for the year. On November 20 th Our Post and Squadron will be hosting the Detachment Meeting. After the meeting, we will be having a 500 Ticket Cash Blast Drawdown. The proceeds of this fundraiser will be going to the Commander project Casey Cares which originated right here in Baltimore Maryland. Tickets are $10.00 with a lot of chances to win with the top prize being $500.00. Please see Jeff Seiler for tickets. They are going fast. Charlotte Hall Maryland’s Veteran’s home needs personal care items like bodywash, shampoo, and toothpaste. (Full size NOT travel size). We will be holding a drive for these items, and they will be delivered to Charlotte Hall on No- vember 21st. See the SAL Bulletin Board for the complete list of items needed. A donation box is located to the left of the POW table at the front of the lounge or see Jeff Seiler if you would like to make a monetary donation. Contributions have been slow and down due to the pandemic. Another program getting started (yes, I know it is early but when you are reading this only 2 more months until Christ- mas) is Toys for Tots. The Sons will be hosting a drive on the 20 th of November, and we will have representatives at our Post from Toy’s for Tot’s, and we are looking to fill a truck up with toys. Please look for the Toy’s for Tot’s Box and let’s fill those boxes so the unfortunate children can have a Christmas they might not ever forget. Legion Riders By: Tim Smith, Director Where has the summer gone? Our Fall Dance scheduled for October 9 th has been rescheduled to Spring, with hopes of better participations and lower infection rate of the Covid-19 Delta variant. After a week delay in our Lottery Scratch off drawing, we finally did it September 7th. The 100 th ticket drawn was Lee Weber, a member who is here often on Tuesday night for Ace of Spades and the 200 th ticket drawn was Auxiliary member Suzanne Phillips. I congratulate both and hope they scratched off some winnings! A big thank you to those who purchased chances and to the members selling. The results of the tickets drawn is on our Riders’ bulletin board and will be up until the 2nd week in October. We are playing catch-up from the inability to raise funds last year and the Scratch off and Gift card drawings did well to fund our activities for Veterans and our Veteran’s community. Fall brings out deer on our roads, more so than normal, so be careful riding, especially at dusk and at night, as deer activity is higher. Scan the side of the road for reflections off the animal’s eyes and avoid an encounter. I look forward to seeing you all at our Post and on the road. If you would like to become a member or supporting member, please attend our meetings. You can also contact our Membership Chairman (Jami Clevenger) at jamiclevenger@outlook.com or go to our website. Membership is free, but you must be a Legionnaire, Auxiliary, or SAL member with dues paid up to date. You do not need to own a motorcy- cle to become a supporting member. We meet on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm sharp in the meeting bay. You must renew your membership annually to stay an active member and continue to receive emails. For all members, please contact our Membership Chairman with any changes to your contact status to continue receiving up to date in- formation. Please visit our website WWW.ALRFSKPOST11.ORG for all scheduled rides, events, applications, etc., and more information on the American Legion Riders. 5 Auxiliary News By Deb Cline, President Well summer is over and I’m hoping everyone enjoyed it. Hope to see many of you soon at our next meeting on October 19th at 7 PM at the Post Home. It all counts for the Unit on the end of the year reports. I know when I am asked what I have done my mind goes blank. So, we all need to keep track of all our time that we spend doing things for friends, schools, church, and other organizations that we can report to the Unit. The Unit will be doing a Halloween Drive-By for our children this year on October 30th from 12 PM to 2 PM. You MUST RSVP NLT Sat. 7 With only 1,692 sponsored wreaths last year and over 4,000 veterans buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery not every veteran was honored with a wreath on Wreaths Across America Day. Mt Olivet had to select specific areas of the cemetery to cover fully with the wreaths available. Post 11 is asking for your help to ensure that we reach our goal to place a wreath on every veteran’s grave at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Please sponsor one or more wreaths in honor of or in memory of an American hero. For each purchase of a $15 wreath, $5 will be returned to Post 11 for use in our many Legion programs including purchasing flags for placement on Memo- rial Day at Mt Olivet. 10 American Legion Oratorical Contest Do you know a high school student who is interested in Government and the Constitution? Scholarships are available at the Post, County, District, State, and National levels through the American Le- gion Oratorical Contest. About the Oratorical Contest “A constitutional speech contest” The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an aca- demic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship. The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, including former president candidate Alan Keyes and CNN anchor Lou Dobbs. Young orators earn some of the most generous college scholarships available to high school students. Over $138,000 in scholarships can be awarded each year. The overall national contest winner gets an $25,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $22,500, and third gets $20,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest’s first round receives a $2,000 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $2,000 scholarship. The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States. High school students (all grades) under age 20 are eligible. Competition begins at the post level and advanc- es to a state competition. Legion department representatives certify one winner per state to the national contest, where department winners compete against each other in two speaking rounds. The contest caps off with a final round that decides the three top finishers. Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with some emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government and speeches are eight to ten minutes long; three- to five-minute speeches on an assigned topic also are part of the contest. FSK Post 11 will hold its contest on January 29, 2022, at 10am. Prizes will be 1stplace $500, 2nd place $300, 3rd place and beyond $100. Winner will advance to District competition in February. State Competitions will follow in March. To get involved Contact: Tony Driebelbies tonyd8341@gmail.com or Wayne Kaikko wkaikko@comcast.net.
