RETAILER SPOTLIGHT: JERRY’S BAR, BOY RIVER Since the 1950s Jerry’s Bar has stood east of Leech Lake just off Highway 4 between the Chippewa National Forest and the Soo Line North Trail. The area is popular for snowmobiling, ATVing, hunting, fishing, and camping. Wanda Jensen (pictured) bought Jerry’s Bar in 2010, and she began selling the full complement of all 27 scratch games and lotto games behind the bar in March 2021. Jensen quickly enjoyed brisk ticket sales in her welcoming, relaxing bar that draw locals regularly and out-of-towners back year after year. As the only lottery seller for about 20 miles, as soon as Jensen got the word out her loyal local customers preferred to stop in at Jerry’s Bar for their lottery tickets along with the relaxing ambiance, a burger, perhaps an electronic dart game, and maybe even some propane. Purchasing a lottery ticket has become almost an automatic part of stopping by, even if just for pop and chips. When Jensen confirms if customers got everything they need, she always asks if they got their lottery tickets. Jerry’s Bar is a cozy friendly spot to watch Vikings games. The bar has a tradition of including customers wearing purple while watching a Vikings game in a post-game photo outside the bar. With a chance to win a lottery Vikings T-shirt with a scratch ticket purchase, even more people want in on the action, including Jared Allen (his cardboard likeness, that is). Jensen also promotes scratch games on the bar’s Facebook page each Ticket Tuesday and is sure to tell customers that she also sells Powerball and other lotto games. This greatly helps advertise lottery and increase sales. This small business in a sparsely populated community has more than 1,100 followers on Facebook. Lottery games have drawn new out-of-towners to Jerry’s Bar in addition to the seasonal regulars who enjoy a meal or evening at the bar after enjoying the trails and other outdoor attractions. Customers also often buy tickets for gifts to place inside birthday and Christmas cards. And not surprisingly, this new seller is off to a great start with a couple $500 Gopher 5 winners.
