Page 17 FEBRUARY GUEST SPEAKER At our meeting in February we will be treated to a talk by one of our own members, Elisabeth Zoffmann. Elisabeth will address an issue in our justice system that most of us know little about, how the justice system deals with those accused of a crime but are deemed mentally disordered. The title of her talk is "Getting away with Murder? A brief overview of Canada’s treatment of mentally disordered accused." The talk is focused on helping people understand how/why some offenders are found “Not Criminally Responsible on account of Mental Disorder” when tried for their offences. NEXT MEETING; TUESDAY FEBRUARY 19 1
FROM THE PRESIDENT Your management committee meets every month before the monthly meeting to deal with any issues and to make decisions on how to improve the monthly meetings and the various activities. So far, our monthly membership meetings are well attended and so are the activities. Special events like the Cirque de Soleil or visits to sites also have good turnouts. We would like to keep it that way but we need your feedback to make sure we are on the right track. The "talking stick" is still available at each monthly meeting. Please consider using it. Emails or phone calls to the Management committee are also welcome ! Best wishes for 2019 Larry Get at least 8 hours of beauty sleep each night. Nine if you’re ugly. Betty White “GROUNDHOG DAY”, starring Bill Murray, was actually filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. A family of groundhogs was raised specifically for this movie. Bill Murray was bitten twice by groundhogs during filming, and required medical treatment. 2
HOOKED ON BOOKS On February 8th, seven members of the book club got together at Rosemary Kenney’s home to discuss “They Left Us Everything” by Plum Johnson. This book is a memoir that starts out primarily as a description of clearing out a 23 roomed house on the waterfront at Oakville. It soon brings in many other stories to provide the background details of a family, a tumultuous marriage, selfless service during WWII, travels in Asia and, finally, the purchasing of the house which they named “Point o’ View” and which they lived in for the next 62 years. Despite having a father who was a stern disciplinarian, the five children grew up with the kind of freedoms that today’s kids can’t even begin to imagine, running free on the shore and through the town. This brought a flood of reminiscences, and it seemed that all of us had a story to share about growing up before cell phones and computers and a very lively and far reaching discussion ensued. SUBMITTED BY ROSEMARY KENNEDY Next meeting February 12th. We will be discussing “The Hundred Foot Journey” by Richard Morais. Marry a man your own age; as your beauty fades, so will his eyesight. 6 S’s WINE CLUB 6 S’s WINE CLUB Fun and frivolity prevailed on Wednesday January 16th at the home of Scott and Judith McIvor. Eight of the 6 S-ers participated in tasting a total of 5 mysterious fermentations - 2 white and 3 red. A delicious assortment of snacks for the evening were provided by the various group members. Once again, the monthly oenophile’s quiz demonstrated our collective abysmal overall knowledge level. Somehow, we shall continue taste testing the beverages, secure in the knowledge that we will never get any smarter. Regardless, the fun-factor of this group continues to expand exponentially, and once again, we exceeded our suggested “time allotment” The clear winner and preferred beverage of the evening was the white Pinot Grigio from Italy, Ruffino. Second place, and the favourite red of the evening, was Mouton Cadet from France. Submitted by Anne Clarke Love is in the air. Wrong. Nitrogen, oxygen and Carbon Dioxide are in the air. Leonardo, just 23 years old, has won the first prize over sixty international piano competitions. Mendelssohn was initially inspired to compose this symphony during his first visit to Britain in 1829. After a series of successful performances in London, Mendelssohn embarked on a walking tour of Scotland with his friend Karl Klingemann. On 30 July, Mendelssohn visited the ruins of Holyrood Chapel at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, where, as he related to his family in a letter, he received his initial inspiration for the piece: continued page 9….. 8
"In the deep twilight we went today to the S P EC I palace were Queen Mary lived and loved... AL The chapel below is now roofless. Grass and EV E NT ivy thrive there and at the broken altar where Mary was crowned Queen of Scotland. Everything is ruined, decayed, and the clear heavens pour in. I think I have found there the beginning of my 'Scottish' Symphony." Ticket are $25.00 per person Look for the sign-up sheet and be prepared to pay at the February or March Probus meeting. Collect your tickets from Ian Kennedy on the afternoon of the concert. Look for him in the Board Room. Take the elevator or the stairs to the top floor. JANUARY WALK This month we went for a walk in the woods south of the Fuller Lake Arena. This is a lovely walk. The trails are wide and well groomed, with long down and uphill sections making for easy walking. Destruction from the December wind storm was evident, the trail being littered with twigs and leaves. The many blow-downs across the trail had already been cleared by the CVRD and weren't an obstacle. Once again the weather was perfect for an outing. Bears and cougars are known to frequent this area so we were fortunate to be accompanied by a pack of hounds to keep us safe. We had an excellent lunch at the Sawmill Tap House and Grill in Chemainus. 10
BETTER BOOKIES Selections for the Tuesday book club Better Bookies are: February The Alice Network by Kate Quinn March A Gentleman in Moscow by Anne Towles April Becoming by Michelle Obama Submitted by Margo Johnston FEBRUARY HIKE Where: Mount Tzouhalem. When: February 7, 2019. Meet in the trail head parking lot at 9:45 am for a 10:00 pm start Description: The Municipal Forest Reserve was established in 1946 by an act of the Municipal Council. At 5,000 hectares it is one of the largest Municipal Forests in North America. Most of the land was acquired through nonpayment of taxes. The municipality has not built any trails except for the short trail to the Ecological Reserve, but there are 4.5 km of roads, many of which are not currently used for logging. There is also a network of informal trails built by enthusiasts. As a result the mountain is covered with a confusing maze of poorly maintained (or not maintained at all) trails. I will be sure to select passable trails and hope that they remain so. (The last time we were here the trail was an obstacle course because an overnight windstorm blew down so many trees.) continued…. Page 12 11
