VOLUME 08: 12 MARCH 2021 FEELINGS The Dormice have been exploring feelings this week and have been using different mediums and techniques to show how they are feeling. Anna liked Excited but they all decided that Happy was the best feeling EVER!
PUZZLES ON A RAINY DAY! What else do you do on a cold and wet day? Have fun and build all the different puzzles in the classroom of course! The Bees were very excitied to welcome Giovanni to the class this week.
ECO HEROES In Grade 5 the pupils have been creating their own Eco Heroes. These creative and unique heroes are trying to prevent climate change. Each Eco Hero has specific eco powers and a weapons or tool that helps to protect the environment. Meet Angelica, she breathes in carbon dioxide and breathes out oxygen. Her tool is called The Nature Cube, which can plant trees within a 5km radius the moment you flick on the switch. Introducing Bunnatural! He has a power called Nature Jump. When he jumps and lands, the area around him grows and is rejuvenated. His stomach is made of iron so he can digest the world’s trash. Enter Zoe the Cloud Washer, a baby eco hero. She has a rattle that cleans the air when she shakes it. It sucks in carbon dioxide and shakes out oxygen. Her flying cloud transports her around the world so that she can disperse seeds to grow trees from her magical rattle. Meet Airceandroid. This complex eco hero has a water glove and an air glove. The air glove purifies the air by sucking out pollution while the water glove sucks impurities out of the water leaving it clean and pure. Last but not least, meet Peely! Peely the flying banana man has a freeze spray that is refreezing all the ice bergs and glaciers that are melting around the world. He makes sure that the polar bears have enough ice shelves to hunt from. Well done Grade 5s. You came up with some really creative yet incredibly useful Eco Heroes.
NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS! Our Catering Department is always hard at work making sure that our children’s tummies are full with healthy, satisfying, colourful meals.
TIMETABLE CHALLENGE The Grade 4s have been hard at work memorising their times tables. Paired up, they challenged one another with different multiples with the aim of cementing their recall effectively. Having a sound grip of multiples and their factors, stands them in good stead when having to calculate effectively. We are so impressed with their enthusiasm! Keep it up, Grade 4s!
DIFFERENT MATERIALS The Grade 1s looked for items on the school grounds made out of 4 different materials. These materials were wood, glass, plastic and metal. They then drew these items in the various categories on their pages.

PE & SPORT ASSESSMENTS Our PE & Sport Assessments for the summer season have been completed. Three assessments were carried out in PE, while various skills were assessed during sports sessions. The PE Assessments are as follows: • Bleep Test Fitness & Endurance • Illinois Test Speed & Agility • Quad Strength Muscle Strength The same tests are performed twice a year, and pupils receive a PE and Sports Report at the end of the 1st and 3rd terms. They are then able to monitor their progress from year to year. Thank you to all our pupils for giving of their best during these assessments. KATE INVITED TO PARA-OLYMPIC SWIMMING TRIALS Congratulations to Kate Allwood who has qualified to participate at the Para-Olympic Swimming Trials which take place in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) from 7 – 12th April 2021. Kate will be competing in the 50m & 100m Breaststroke events in an attempt to qualify for the Para- Olympic Games which take place in Tokyo, Japan, between the 24th August and the 5th September 2021. MOUNTAIN BIKING A few children have been enjoying the mountain biking sessions on a Friday afternoon at the cycle track behind Southey Vines. Special thanks to Coach Paul who has been running these sessions.
PLAYSMARTER HOCKEY CAMP A number of our senior girls had the opportunity to participate in the Playsmarter Hockey Camp which was hosted at Parel Vallei High School last weekend. Playsmarter is accredited by the WP Hockey Union and had permission from the South African Hockey Association to host this event. Our girls enjoyed coaching sessions from some very experienced coaches. These sessions covered general fitness, attacking and defensive skills, and set pieces. The girls then got to apply these skills in organised friendlies. Congratulations to Eva and Isabella Herbertson who won the planking challenge at 12 min 30 sec, and to Anna-Rose Cocks who was selected as our team’s most promising player, well done girls! It was a fabulous weekend and a great success. Well done to all involved.
MUSIC READING GLASSES This week we worked on two piano skills: 1) reading without looking at the keyboard and 2) teaching our fingers to 'feel' where they are on the keyboard without needing our eyes to tell them where they are. These prioperceptive skills are fundamental to becoming a good sight-reader and for memorisation of pieces. We had lots of fun with our funky reading glasses! THURSDAY MORNING LIVE! It was such a feel-good moment today to see children pause, listen and react to unexpectedly hearing live music on campus. They sat down to bask in the beautiful sounds conjured by some of our senior music students. Well done to our performers who broke ground today in this new weekly venture aimed at giving our pupils more performance opportunities.
WORRY MONSTERS The Haydock Hall was busy with music activities on Thursday, so Drama moved into the Art room where we got to draw worry monsters. We talked about different emotions, first drawing different faces and emotions, and then drawing our worry monsters who can help us deal with any worries we may have. The children created all sorts of characters and even little worry baskets. Well done, Grade 3s!
ANIMAL STRUCTURES AND ADAPTATIONS Our Grade 4 Natural Scientists have spent the last while studying the structures of animals and how they are adapted to their environment. We spent time discussing how different structural adaptations allow them to thrive in their habitats. Here are some of the adaptations we discovered. • The albatross has a 4m wingspan that allows it to conserve energy as it glides on air currents. It needs to save energy as it can spend months in the air! • Camels have long eye lashes to protect their eyes from sand being blown into them during sand storms. Their nostrils are sealable, also so keep sand out. • Bats have large ears to allow them to effectively hunt prey using echo location. • Fish are covered in scales to allow them to move smoothly through water. They have gills to absorb oxygen directly from water. • Parrots have strong beaks to break through tough tropical nuts found in the areas that they live. These are just some of the amazing facts we learnt about this week.
GRADE 4 SHOW AND TELL ORALS The Grade 4 children have set the bar high in terms of preparation and effort for their first orals of the year. We were treated to lego displays, cookie tasting, magic tricks, space expeditions and so much more. They all spoke confidently and enjoyed entertaining their peers.
MATERIAL FOR MATHS The Grade 1s loved this outdoor activity. They used materials that they could find outside to make different types of shapes. What an exciting way to learn maths!
GRADE 3 COLLABORATION This week the Grade 3s took on the challenge of collaboration; working together to achieve. They love the flexibility of space while learning. As part of the theme this term they are exploring the human body and vital organs. They are creating life size models which will soon be filled with all the necessary organs for survival. Ruby is enjoying the theme so much she shared some of her fact finding by presenting a PowerPoint presentation. What a proud teacher!
EMOJIS, FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS IN GRADE R We have been exploring the many feelings that we can feel in one day. We have learnt to read people’s faces to see how they are feeling, as this is how we can express ourselves too! We had to quickly pull our masks down to show the different feelings through our facial expressions – sad, happy, worried! The children made their own emojies and used straw to make crazy hair for when we sometimes feel crazy!
ALL ABOUT THE HEART The heart is a vital organ and the Grade 3s have taken the opportunity to learn about how it uses pressure to pump blood between atriums, vetricals, the lungs and then into the body.
ALL ABOUT GOODS AND SERVICES The Grade 7s are learning about goods and services hat is in their EMS lessons. This week they took a look at the e ood sustainable provision of goods through reusing and recycling materials to create an economically viable product while also being kind to our environment. We have been impressed with the high standard of their presentations so far. Well done, Grade 7s! lastic is shredded eprocessed into their raw material Coloured
