Summer Greetings Everyone! Yes, it’s that time of year, my red dogs and I can be found lounging IN the pool, we are not much for sun- bathing! Hope you and your gang(s) are finding ways to stay cool and have fun this summer too! Speaking of FUN, EISA has a new Fun Day event planned and we would love to have some or all of you join us – and bring the children and grandchildren and whatever well-behaved dogs you or they may have! Yes, this is an “all inclusive” event, meaning it’s not limited to Irish Setters. More importantly, it is aimed at kids, be- tween 10 & 18! As many of you are aware AKC, dog clubs and even our own EISA have experienced decreased memberships, reduced entries and a lack of new- comers, especially younger generations, joining our ranks. This is some- what surprising, given the increasing popularity of pets and pet activities on TV and social media, the push for pet inclusion at public locations and the increasing sales in pet merchandise; you would think we would see interest in our activities soar, but we haven’t. Why? Honestly, I don’t have the answer. I know, like most problems, it is multi-faceted; families’ decreasing disposable income, the over- commitment of many families to other activities, the increased popularity of “rescue” dogs, perhaps coupled with the increasingly “taboo” idea of purchasing a purebred dog, are all likely contributors. Few of these is- sues we can resolve but perhaps we can take a few steps to change the direction. Will it make a difference – who knows? – but, we know noth- ing will change if we continue on this path. 4
So how is this related to FUN or EISA’s Fun Day? I am so glad you asked! This year EISA is inviting 12 children, ages 10-18, and their well-behaved dogs to take part in our Fun Day! We are setting up special events aimed at exposing the children and their dogs to various AKC events including CGC, Trick Dog and Agility. In addition, we will have an “Information Station” designed to help children register their non-purebred dogs, explain additional activities available like Flyball, Scentwork, Field work and Dock Diving, and provide them an introduction on where they can take classes, train their dogs and how to enter events. We hope that exposure to the FUN side of dog activities may encourage children (and their parents) who are unaware of these activities to join in, after all not every child is a soccer star! Our event is scheduled for July 28 at 9:30am and it is being held at mem- ber, Deb Hyland’s beautiful horse farm, which provides a large tightly fenced paddock perfect to set up three shaded demo stations and plenty of water, including a kiddie pool for pups! Our Info Station and check-in will be at her barn. A pizza & drinks lunch will be provided. Best of all, we NEED Irish Setters (and their owners) for demonstration and to help with kids who might not have a dog or don’t have a cooperative dog!! BRING your redheads, these kids may have a rescue dog now, but let’s make their next dog an Irish Setter! BTW, as a reward for your good deeds, EISA will run a Scentwork train- ing session immediately following our “children’s event”. We expect this will get started around 1pm and we will have plenty of water and hotdogs to keep the red dogs cool and motivated. EISA is hosting it’s first Scen- twork Trial (Novice only) on Oct 26, 2019. If you have not done Scentwork, this is a great chance to try it out. As I tell everyone, “this is something I can do!!” It really is that easy and a lot of fun! Hope to see you all soon, Mariette EISA President 609-238-0416 or mtomalley@comcast.net PS – Please call or email me if you are willing to assist! 5

Sandcastle Irish Setters I am very proud of how well my 2 Girls did at the Irish Setter 2019 National. GCH Sandcastle Legal Decision "Taylor" received an Award of Merit in Best of Breed. She was beautifully handled by Peter Kubacz and showed lovely. She was right up there with the top Irish Setters in the country. Sandcastle Eternal Gold of Lunn's "MeMe", and her 2 litter- mate sisters, were quite a team. In the 12-15 month bitch class, they took 3 out of 4 place- ments. Sister Abbey placed 1st, sister Ava placed 3rd, and MeMe placed 4th. MeMe was also handled by Peter Kubacz. They were bred by Krista Musil, Lunn's Irish Setters. Their sire, my Ch. Sandcastle Knight Eternal "Michael", who himself was a BOB winner at a National, was smiling down from doggie heaven. The litters dam is the beautiful Ch. Lunn's Yabba Dabba Do "Pebbles" bred/owned by Krista Musil. It was a very special National for me which I will always remember. Linda Dick - Sandcastle Irish Setters 11
